  • DIY Foil window panels Keep heat and sun out of your house
We don't have a good working air conditioner in our home so we use 2 window units. They work alright but when it gets so hot and humid out they take extra work to work. Also with minimal shade on my house it can get pretty hot even with the air on. I have some block out curtains but face it those are just as expensive as getting professional things in your home to keep energy costs down.
So my mom said Foil worked. I took cardboard and tinfoil and made window panels to slide in certain windows to keep the heat and sun out to keep rooms cooler and energy costs down on my window units.

You are the only one who did a video that it sensible because most videos they show people buying the expensive foil. Not everyone has the money to buy expensive. The dollar is what the poor man needs. Thank you keep the good videos coming girl.

the foil doesn't really reflect the radiant heat as much as it blocks the sunlight from passing through the glass so it really doesn't matter which side of the foil faces out. it might be slightly better to have the shiny side out but i doubt you could measure any performance improvement. the important thing is to get the foil layer as close to the glass as possible to prevent air heating between the foil and the glass. i did this years ago in an apartment that i lived in that had south facing windows and no air conditioning or exhaust fans, so summers were absolutely brutal.. one thing i did that is optional was to paint the foil white, because in those days if someone covered window glass with foil you were suspected to be running a pot growing operation, but white window coverings were like drapes and drew no attention.

Hello from south of Skwayways aka Vancouver BC! I tried cardboard without foil during our heat dome in June 2021. Then I found some money and bought some blackout blinds and they were okay for the rest of the summer. This year the heat waves were worse than last time. I broke down and bought an AC unit and it is a blessing...until I want to cook or wash clothes! I need to block my windows just like you so that I can shut off the AC and eat or do laundry without steaming up. Thanks for the idea!

@8:16 - you want to wrap the interior side in aluminum foil as well. Aluminum foil has low emissivity ( low heat radiation ) but heat from the foil can migrate by conduction (touching the paper board ) and convection ( the curtain/blinds do help @ 9:35 ).

Wow just watching this here in England, wow you made this English guy think where he could get some cardboard for free for his tin foil .....the US post office, they give those away free, I remember from living in West Virginia for 8 years ..... lol
Ya can’t get those here in U.K., everything is hard work here.
I have stockpiled some cardboard though that came with items ordered from Amazon Etc.
But some of it is a little on the heavy side, unlike yours from the post office ....light and easy to use.

yanks & brits - I totally understand... i worked for a company here in the states that also had a manufacturing division located in county cork, ireland. anytime we sent them a new machine or materials, the workers in the irish factory would fight over the packing materials we crated or boxed up the new equipment or materials in for shipping. we used to buy the cheapest, nastiest-looking plywood and lumber for making shipping crates, the manufacturing manager in ireland sent us photos of his living room in his home that he remodeled using that ugly-looking wood, and he was very proud of it. apparently lumber is very hard to get and very expensive in the uk..

If you don’t mind the room being dark then it’s perfect but if you constantly want to let light in then use the cardboard for fast on and off option. I personally had the foil directly on the window all summer and took it down in the Fall when the temperatures dropped.

    I got 2 space blankets from Amazon, £2.99 .....($3.80)
I have been cutting one up today and putting it behind my radiators.
We have heat from radiators mostly in the U.K., we don’t have central air like you guys.
Radiators are ok but they are always placed on the wall, and No one ever puts foil Etc behind them .....so loads of heat is lost out the wall.
Putting foil behind them reflects the heat back into the room.
I will see what these space blankets are like, but I will also get some Thick aluminium foil and use that on some of the radiators.

    • @CRogers
      @CRogers Před 5 lety +6

Black spray paint is much less effective because black absorbs the most light and therefor the most heat. Use grey or white spraypaint if you must, but reflective material will catch the least heat. Otherwise the heat from the sun will come through the winddow, hit your black panel will dump the heat into the room as the shortwave light radiation is converted to longwave heat radiation. (if you don't believe me, coat half of your panel with tinfoil, and just feel the difference in the black surface and foil surface of the panel after they have been in the sun a while).

does your hoa allow you to affix shutters on the outside of the house? If so, I recommend it. External shutters provide shade, and all the heat from the sun which is absorbed by the wood will not be transferred into your room. They also allow a nice breeze to pass through to help cool your house when it's breezy: www.ideas4homes.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Stylish-Dark-Exterior-Window-Shutters-and-Clear-Glass-Windows-near-White-Pillars-and-Green-Plantations-1024x683.jpg
