I think this is the first follow-up video I have ever made. Normally I wouldn't make a video on just a joystick, but when I found out about this product, I just had to talk about it. Who knows what we'll find next in the continuing adventures of Power to the 10th Inc!
What about the gameboy player isn't that a follow up vid on the super gameboy?
More videos? Keep em coming.
Good job Greg love your videos
I just want to tell you how much I really appreciate all the effort you put into your videos. Keep up the excellent work!
Finn Balor - It’s Norm.
"The hot stik is basically the hot seat without the seat!"
man that's hot
Specially if you sit on it.
That's a hot take!
TheAlexxManReviewer my stik is hot.
So, it's the Hot...
Rewind time
I had this and had NO idea that it had Mercury in it. Wonderful little products these joysticks are.
Exept the Le Stick you guys looked at that has mercury in it?
There's a controller I have, the Microsoft Sidewider Freestyle Pro that might have mercury switches in it too. That's worth checking out if you haven't already
@@ohnoitschris
Wait what?!
Rerez!
Oh hi Rerez👋🙂
Gotta love Gaming Historian, no Drama, no Bullshit, only good well researched Videos featuring one of the most likeable CZcamsrs.
Kaneda Mikami that’s the term I was looking for.. Likeable. He really is - he’s one of the few CZcamsrs where I’ve gone out of my way to watch all of his uploaded content.
Random Scottish Bloke OG stands for Original Ganster(or Gangsta)
@@OttophilIt's also sometimes used as a term for "original generation", I.E. O.G. Xbox 360, to differentiate it from the S and the E models
Gaming Historian really is one of the best original generation CZcamsrs. I really appreciate his commitment to neutral stances on things, even LGR's injected his politics into his videos before. Norm's the man.
You still into that drama with a pro gamer?
He really is the Fred Rogers of CZcams
2:17 This is where the term "mad as a hatter" came from, because hat makers used mercury and often had too much exposure to it, causing them to go a little batty.
The Hot Stik sounds like it provides quite an _immersive_ experience!
Is see what you did there.
The thrustmaster is just incomparable
that's what she said!
It sounds more like a great snack, but not the snack to eat.
It _Inserts_ you right into the game!
Gaming Historian: I will not open the controller to prevent getting in contact with Mercury.
Cody'sLab: Tasting Mercury Metal!
Haha, my thoughts exactly
Mercury is a little overrated in danger levels. Its not all too dangerous. You can put bare hands in it (provided you have no cuts or wounds). The real danger is the invisible vapors. Thats what'll kill ya
God i love Cody the crazy bastard
Does he think the Mercury is just sloshing around in the joystick? It is in little glas capsules.
First thing I thought is Cody would have opened that joystick up.
I've been waiting a long time to see The Gaming Historian's "Hot Stik."
You sir win the internet.
Mulvi747 thanks, I came to the comments specifically looking for a penis joke.
Well from my understanding after watching this video, he didn't know the Hot Stik actually existed. So that would mean he only recently acquired the Hot Stik.
I’m always in the market for quality dick jokes and I was not disappointed here.
Projared 2
0:57 - "technically you can detach the joystik from the seat, and everything would work just fine"
...so they did...lol
Gaming Historian: I don't want to open this peripheral because of the **deadly mercury**
CodysLab : **gargles mercury**
@Gaming Historian SEND THE STICK TO CODY'S LAB SO HE CAN OPEN IT UP AND SHOW US THE TECHNOLOGY!
@@TAEYYO That would be a very BAD idea to open the Hot Stick. Not only will liquid mercury (that's 30 years old sitting in that controller) be toxic to the environment it gets exposed to, but if that liquid mercury spills out, the reduction of it could cause the Hot Stick to stop working properly (well, less properly than usual). So you not only have a potential health hazard, but a less functioning controller as well.
@@johnpenguinthe3rd13 uh, im sure the mercury is contained in a glass tube as all mercury switches are, and not just a glob of mercury swishing around in the plastic housing.
Man, can you imagine what the ideas that the people at Power 10 said no to were like if they approved the hot seat and hot stick?
Wrestling With Gaming I don't know if I want to know! Hot Helmet perhaps?
The Hot Cath.
How come hot stick gets shit but wiiimote is awesome?
Racism.
REREZ:
There's mercury in this joystick?!
(wears gloves, protective eyewear, and evacuates the neighborhood)
Gaming Historian:
There's mercury in this joystick?
Yeah I just won't open it.
Let be honest. Rerez was over reacting. It's not gonna kill you in it's metalic state, unless you ingest it or let it evaporate.
Exactly, He was exaggerating...... and Norm actually didn't care but he did a good move of not opening it......
Le Stick
I think that's the joke
“If you want to use the joystick, make sure it’s not leaky” is pretty solid advice, HotStick or not
"Hot Stik"? That should be the name of an adult toy, not a videogame accesory xD
Faaar too simple name for an adult's toy. It's gotta be way more silly and corny.
czcams.com/video/4VOd1frUaOg/video.html
when he holds the hot stik up, I was like "hrmm def thats one of the uglier Spencer's Gifts Dildos."
it looks like a dildo
Imagine being the one kid that owned this back then. "Hey guys wanna play videogames and use the Hot Stik after school?"
Ah now THIS! Is the future of gaming!
Nice Profile Picture
MC Chase Thanks! Nice to see a fellow cultured
0:41 that cat seemed to enjoy it.
2:02 -- Mercury was also an entry level luxury brand from the Ford Motor Company ;)
Too bad they're gone... All we have is just Ford and Lincoln
It also name of planet, it's Mercury
These are so retro yet intriguing
1:07 All those consoles are beautiful!
I'm a simple man, I see gaming hostorian, I prep a snack and hit like.
I love the old Nintendo commercial throwback @4:36
Run button, you say? Maybe it was initially intended to be released for the Turbografx16...
That's correct. Quickshot made near identical controllers for the Atari and Commodore home computer line, NES, Genesis, and Turbografx16 all at the same time. Once the machined molds for the plastics were made, they could release a whole range of products onto the market to maximize their profits.
Because the Hot Stik is identical to the Quickshot Python 2, I am nearly 100% sure Power to the 10th was simply the distributor, and this was in fact manufactured by Quickshot.
Rerez: A mercury switch controller? I’m gonna put on a gas mask and use high quality protective gloves!
Historian: *sloshes controller up to microphone whilst barehanded” yep, definitely mercury.
Cody from cody'slab: drinks mecury says it tastes like nothing walks away unharmed Cody 1 Death 0
Best video series on CZcams. Extremely enjoyable to watch
I found that in my sister's drawer when I was younger
*Uh oh*
Sounds hot
cuz the hot stick
I have no idea where i'm supposed to post something about video suggestions but i would LOVE to see you dive more into the development of games from the 90's era, your video on Spryo really taught me a lot of things i didn't know. Keep up the good work!
One of the reasons I love this channel so much is that it's purely wholesome, family friendly, informative, educational entertainment. Every time I see an upload I smile because I know I'll get to learn about something I either knew nothing about, or I'll get to know more about the things I love. This is easily one of the best channels on CZcams. Also I just really like the PBS feel to everything lol.
It reminds me of the le stick for atari 2600
Its also use the same thing -mercury
Knocking it out of the park lately with these fascinating gaming product videos!
Gaming Historian's videos are really binge worthy for me
sadly for me I have binged them already
Smalls the Timelord same here
This thing is like an early pre-cursor to the Wii-mote in some ways.
was thinking the same thing
Saw this in my feed, my day got better
this is why i love this channel! you spend the time in research! and well your Canadian voice is calming!
Please make a follow up video where you open it. The mercury switches, which are enclosed, are by far not enough to pose any sort of danger to you unless you decide to desolder them and try chewing them. Even then you're unlikely to have any sort of long term issues.
I literally just finished watching your Hot Seat video, too.
Notice how the Aladdin Deck Enhancer is nowhere to be seen since it got destroyed on the AVGN episode
It might of been a nod to the avgn video, of course, it isn't true, Norman still has the Deck Enhancer, it's just not seen at all to make a nod to the AVGN episode that James Rolfe did
@@ChaseMC215 r/woooosh
@@EricICX
Fuck off, woosh shit head
That wasn't a woooosh, it was an explanation that Norm's Deck Enhancer wasn't actually destroyed.
@@Chaos89P It was a joke...
Oh snap! I just finally got around to watching the Zelda video last night, and now there’s a new GH video the day after! It’s a shorty but a million times better than no video at all. Thank you, Gaming Historian! 😁
That mercury tilt switch scares the shit out of me.
Your make some of the most enjoyable content. Absolutely stellar videos. I've binge watched you for the last two weeks and I can't get enough :D
I grew up and live near Wichita. Never knew we had these hidden gems! Amazing work! Can't wait to see if you find more.
You find the quirkiest stuff for these videos, I love it
I just want to tell you how much I really appreciate all the effort you put into your videos. Keep up the excellent work!
Dude I love your videos I wish you could put a new one out every day. Thank you for all the hard work you put in I look forward to seeing many many more videos out of your channel thanks again.
I remember seeing ads for the Hot Stik in EGM or GamePro. Always wondered if/how it worked. Great video!
Norm, your work is amazing. I recently discovered you within the last couple of months. I have no idea how I was unaware of you for so long given the channels I follow. But I'm blown away by your detail oriented history videos and your pleasant personality. It's chocolate and peanut butter, and I appreciate you very much. I would love to see you do a video or two on the history of Majoras Mask and the Banjo Kazooie series. Again, thank you. You're remarkably talented.
It sounds like you want to play with his Hot Stik!
Love your videos! Great job with the Hot Stik!
I love everything you do! You do an amazing job! Please keep the history coming...or at least till I'm dead. Would love to see Megaman Legends or Metal Slug info. Thanks again for such great informative vids.
I had one of these as a kid, I think I still have it somewhere, you were able to do the moonwalk on Mario bros when you invert the hot stick while moving right, it was the coolest thing then, I’m surprised there are no videos on it
This controller reminds me of the “Le stick”. A motion control joystick very similar to that one, but for the 2600. Used to have one of those back in the day.
Info: 2:12 does not show canned tuna fish. It shows the beautiful majestic living fishes which belong to the genus Thunnus. Sadly, they are severely overfished and a lot of species are on the red list. Combining this with the poisoning mercury, we conclude: Do not buy canned tuna fish!
And also: Great video :)
Tuna tastes better fresh anyways.
Awesome video Norm. You made those 3D glasses look the coolest.
Love your channel and videos learn new things and products keep up the great work!
_"Yaaa! Dat's hat!"_ Seriously though, another awesome video! Keep it up! 👍
I love your channel I just wish I could watch them for longer haha
Always a great job! Thank you sir.
Great video as always Norman!
Great video! Informative and well versed! Nice job here!
Funny to think they were playing around with motion controls way before the Wii.
Also I chuckled a bit when I saw that Tetris cartridge. "From Russia with Fun!" LOL
I remember having a similar accessory for the NES. It boasted that it could also unlock new modes and secrets from your games, and it sort of did. If you held it upside down, the controller would signal the system a simultaneous press of the left and right directions. Some games would react differently to this, since usually it would be impossible to do such a signal on a normal D-Pad. IIRC on Gauntlet II you could walk around temporarily invulnerable. Super Mario 3 had a hidden feature from this signal, but I forget what it did. It was neat to replay games and try out the upside down mode on each.
That was the GameHandler licensed by Nintendo for NES. You can see the commercial and tricks video here: czcams.com/video/4VOd1frUaOg/video.html . There was also an unlicensed version for Sega Genesis.
You are great, Gaming Historian! Keep it Going!
I ran into one of this guy’s videos and now I can’t stop watching omg.
I love at 3:55 the way Mac has his hands over his head like..
"Please stop this! I CAN'T TAKE THIS ANYMORE!"
One thing to mention about this product that can get overlooked: A device that can be used with just one hand can work wonders for those with certain handicaps. Those who have suffered a stroke or might be missing a limb would gladly take this sort of device even if it is not perfect. With that said, I certainly understand why the product (especially at its price point) was not an astounding success.
Great video as always and I enjoyed your recent appearance on Chad's channel.
I love learning about these random obscurities I’ve never seen!
This channel deserves way more subscribers
With one vide every 2 or 3 months, im impressed he has this many subs. Agree his videos are so damn good and profesional... but with how infrecuent they are, is amazing his channel is still alive.
Awesome video Norm!
I needed this video so bad right now...thank you.
Wow you have a lot of subscribers. Keep them good videos coming!
Nice job as always.
Love those 90's sunglasses.
Hey Norman, Love it :) you create such interesting content keep up the amazing videos! :D
Thanks Norm, great video!
In the video doesn't sound like liquid, maybe they use anothner old technique: a pcb with four pads, a common circle and a free rolling metal ball, the ball, when the device is tilted moves around andx shortcircuits the pads and the common and that's how it detects the movement
First we have the dxxk enhancer, and now we have a hot stick. I’d say there’s no lack of adults’ toys for gamers.
...they seriously called it that.
"Come on, Dave, can we play with your Hot Stik?"
"I love my Hot Stik. It's SOOOO BAAAAD."
Time to learn, thanks Norman.
I get that a lot of these early third-party controllers used gimmicks to get you to buy them over the official ones (hell, you still see that today with light-up controllers or those AirFlow ones), but at some point you really have to sit back and ask "who is this product supposed to appeal to?" Same applies to the Roll-N-Rocker, the U-Force, the Power Glove, and the Sega Activator.
Happy to see another of your videos has come out! Also elemental mercury isn't very dangerous it's just the mercury vapor it can produce and even then it's not going to kill with just a little exposure.
Whenever Norman has the ultra dark sunglasses he looks like the terminator
Before the Hot Stick, there was the La Stick for the Atari 2600, and that also uses mercury for the tilt switches
Waiting with excitement for a new of your (NES) videos!! :) :)
I like these short episodes. :)
Eagerly awaits an AVGN episode with the hotseat, combined with the hotstick, R.O.B as a sidekick and a virtuaboy strapped to his head.
I need another doc, Doc. I need me some more gaming history from the historian himself. Gimme gimme gimme.
Norm's videos are wholesome.
Keep up the good work GH
I got more action, thrills, freedom, and excitement out of this follow-up video than you could even imagine. :p
"Looking at the Hot Stik box" love it
Boom! Tetris for Norm.
People who disliked this video must have gotten some Hot Stikyness on their face.
Love ur vids!
Never heard of it. Thanks for the history leason.
I never used joy-sticks while playing video games in the home console anyway but it's interesting there are so many joy-sticks with many cool ideas.
Keep feeding my brain your videos!
Norman you should do a Gaming Historian episode, about none other than, The Gaming Historian. Seriously. I’m interested in knowing what made you want to dig deep into the shadows of some of these great (some lousy) games/systems/accessories from yesteryear.
Ow loved previous video about HOT Seat.
Love your channel.... grab myself cup of thea... lean back.. and enjoy the show !
This is the last video you've filming in your house before moving yeah? I'm totally gonna miss it but I'm excited for an all new environment to learn about awesome footnotes in gaming history. Good luck with the move Norm!
2:17 Cody'sLab approves. That's why he spat it out after drinking it.
Ok, all jokes aside. Mercury isn't this very dangerous stuff everybody think's it it. You shouldn't put it in your mouth if you don't know how pure it is. But if you wear rubber gloves when handling it you'll be fine.
This video should win "Is this video really necessary" award
To be fair, I think your comment is in the running for it's own category, as well.
@@the-NightStar That's okay. At least I didn't spend weeks making a video about it
