Many people are not aware that Steve Allen was hip when "Hip" was "Hep."
He didn't stay hep or he would have been another Carson or Letterman instead of ending up hosting game shows in the sixties. His problem was that he loved jazz and playing piano and hated rock and roll and because of that he lost an entire generation.
Steve Allen played piano on an album with Jack Kerouac when Jack read his poems… October and the railroad Earth is a good one.
Poetry for the Beat Generation. It's superb
This is great.
Poor Jack...he was lonely 😟
This is great. Thanks for uploading. Coughing from laughter
Steve doesn't recall anything Jack said but kept scrupulous inventory of his brandy!
Nothing like having a great buzz on and then everyone wants to go to bed.
Guess I'm a real jerk then, cause I would have by midnight or so, told the guy, hey man I can't hang anymore, gotta get up early in the am...let's call it a night, and walked him to the door....Steve must have been a real real nice guy and worried about hurting someone's feelings!!??
I’m with you on that. I would’ve asked him if he wanted to stay the night because I’m going to bed and there’s the guest room.
Pussies 🙄
Interestingly, in "On the Road," Kerouac writes the he hates it when people yawn, three or four times in the book. However, there is a place in OTR where Jack yawns. Ha.
Maybe Jack just wanted to make sure he was never invited over again...
Subtitle suggestion: "Alcoholism 101"
This sounds like a situation where you realize the person you look up to really isn't that great but just another person.
To you, maybe. Try writing 16 novels in lrss than 16 years sometime.
@@excelsior999 Yeah, 15 of which stunk.
Sounds like Jack turned int Dean Morirarty a little bit.
Great clue....I think Jack wanted to be Dean=Neal...or just wanted to be like him, admired Neal for his 'free spirit" "go crazy anytime" kinda vibe. Similar to Allen G. wanting to be able to sing like Bob Dylan. There was a lot of emulation, influence by ....the greats of the time, Beat Generation. .... the word "beat" ...to Jack K, and many others, meant "spontaneous " lifestyle....Jack basically was influenced largely by Neal, a pill popper, car thief, womanizer. And oddly the "Beat Generation" was set into motion by Jack because of a crazy bastard like Neal, who had sooooo much energy and personality......the whole Beat Generation, and hippie movement after.....in a sense was "nudged" forward by Neal Cassidy.
steve allen was the worst dressed man after 1969
alterdestiny - "Who is this guy?" Wow. I must be on the Internet.
