14 I'd Rather Be Thin Than Famous - Hudba
Listening to this while i ride a freight train through oregon just feels so right
We're better human beings after listening to this!!! Happy birthday Jack Kerouac
Nobody reads Jack better than Jack.
Absolutely!
"Charlie Parker looked like BUDDHA"
You can say that again
Duh
Steve Allen did a great job on the piano.
20 years old here. time is not slowing down and soon i'll be 21 and 25 and 30 and past that i'll be nothing but a chess piece, playing the role of a pawn in someone else's game, but i'll always carry a bit of kerouac in me. a troubled soul that i hope is at rest now. and wherever he is now, i hope he knows the impact that he had in many young boys and girls just like me, throughout the years past, and the years to come.
He is 37 years old here, if this was recorded in 1959, as mentioned in the title. He was born in 1922.
nice writing there
Nice writing, enjoy the journey.
Oh how dramatic I was... but true to my feelings. At the time I looked at my life, at my future and only fog could be seen. Nothing but uncertainty. Now I'm 23, and nothing has changed but my willingness to open my heart to it. The fog is still out there but in it there's always love and beauty. Let it be known to whoever reads this, that Rafael from the first comment found happiness, found sadness, found love eventually and lost it multiple times. He's suffering from one as he writes this comment, but God, how many memories he has made...
It's your game in the end, and you'll have enough time to be the pawn and the king, for all the pieces need to be moved.

Keep going, man, keep going. I'm on the cusp of turning 60, and every plan I ever had for my life has gone terribly wrong, but I'm still alive and kicking, fighting the good fight (so they say, although I'm not sure what's good about it). Yeah, when I turn 60, I'll have outlived Jack by 13 years. I guess that'll be my claim to fame. Ha! No one knows me or my poetry, and I really don't care. Cheers.
Such a great spirit. If anything, the thing people miss about Jack was the sheer joy, the spirit, which flooded the page.
had read Kerouac on the road when i was 18 and then by the time i had left home at 21 i had read most of his books Dharma Bums and Desolation Angels being my favorites and it was Kerouac that spurred me on to a life of adventure going out west taking a look around hitchhiking across the usa twice and then driving many times between the east the south and the west America oh America from sea to shining sea and her mountains of majesty This mystery haunts us something about dreams
great truths that are portrayed were all well-meaning yet it can never be brought back completely whole
you catch it in glimpses we call deja vu stumbling while awake we search our memories to seize that moment once again
for they belong to us ghosts of our inspiring muse
me2/cheers
The beat generation may have passed but the beauty lies within

I'm stuck in bed sick. Listening to Jack is so comforting. Thanks for uploading this.
let jack heal you

Too bad he couldn't heal himself 😩
Happy birthday, March 12th. Here’s to the great Jack Kerouac, what a great man, god bless him. One of my hero’s i would have love to have met. He lived life his own unique way. A legend.
I get more and more from his all-too-few readings. And Steve Allen’s perfectly in synch piano is like icing. Brilliant sympathizing!
Why did I wait till I was 38 to discover Kerouac, Burroughs, Ginsberg... So behind the 8 ball. Well better late than never I suppose. Thanks for sharing this !
Bill Knox Charles bukowski is goof
Bill, if it's any consolation, I'm 65 and "discovered" the Beats when I was 14. I'm still discovering. The journey never ends until your last breath, and after that who knows? The Beats were the inflection point in American history that challenged the establishment and the American Dream. As a kid living in NYC during the 60s, and a drummer in a rock band, I felt, first hand the energy and purpose the Beats left us hippies.
Ro Mo I'm a drummer myself. Still trying to master the Purdie Shuffle haha. I wish I grew up in NYC... I'm just a southern boy from Texas hahaha. Thanks for the reply.
Naw bro. You right on time.
Jack is a real boyo, but Ginsberg is a wrong-un to be honest. Burroughs is alright
He was definitely a drunken mad genius! More storyteller than poet!
Yet,his rambling poems intrigue me! You can picture him at a barstool,
with a piano accompaniment in the background, telling his poetic tales
of grandeur to anyone who will listen! Definitely a classic album worth hearing!
My absolute favorite author. I've read almost everything he's written. You can hear his love of bop by the inflection and rhythm of his words. He's improvising over Steve Allen improvising! If this isn't jazz then I guess I don't know jazz. Shit......do I not know jazz? Nah, I do I do......
me2...72 but Kerouaced around the country because of him ...Hit the Road ...Jack!!! Thanks Man RIP
thank you and peace. ♥ Kerouac is eternal. never hip nor over rated in the hearts of the old timers who know. ♥ ...and fuck the movie. har har har...
I love this so much, it's unreal
I just bought this on vinyl and I'm completely in love.
@@kristim6696 Read 'October in The Railroad Earth' rom Lonesome Traveler
Might be a CZcams version of the whole piece
I had this CD from the kerouac collection in the mid 90's I wore it out because i played it so much. I still love it the same, never gets old.
He never ask for fame, he just wanted to write about his travels and sell a few books to pay the bills. His influence is as important as James Dean in film and Elvis Presley is in rock and roll. This young generation today don't even know who Kerouac was. Check out Mexico City Blues, the great book of poetry of the 20th century.
My friends and I, in our 20s and 30s, love Kerouac and 50s-60s jazz.
24. Kerouac is mine and many of my friends favorite author.
bodensick nuggets
In my creative writing class I was the only one who knew who Jack Kerouac was. I'm 19 btw.
this is such a great description of him
The greatest spoken word album of all time. God bless you, Mr Kerouac.

so the rabbit hole of new technology took me from the Judy Garland show on television with Steve Allen as a guest, to Steve Allen on CZcams, Jack Kerouac with Steve Allen. Then the Steve Allen Jack Kerouac album posted on CZcams. Wow!
Really, who'da thunk it. Even better for longtime fiends.
aye, sir... its re-mar-velously re-freshing..!
This is one of the albums that started a fire in Tom Waits. Kerouac being his hero for decades. Following Kerouac ghost as it searches for the heart of Americas eternal Saturday night.
First time I listened to Tom Waits I immediately recognize Kerouac in his songs, although my English is too bad.
Nice observation on the influence on and of Tom Waits. Both American Treasures.
I'm reading the book 'Song Noir' right now, about halfway through. It's about Waits but Kerouac shows up on just about every other page.
And Janis’ great Saturday night swindle…
damn, well said bro. I'm a huge Tom Waits fan too. Hoping to follow in his shuffling footsteps ;)
Just wonderful to hear this after so many years lost album, then CDs, and great CZcams suddenly found. Food for this soul. Thank you for posting.
I can hear his influence on Tom Waits
Kerouac is for the soul
"the late great birthday boy, JK"
speaking through a living breathing instrument,
pulsating pang of the jazz tongue taking off--
assisting myriad ears stunned, in awe of lifting.
to be lifted is necessary throughout all our days.
for now it's only the eternal universe outside the window,
that cold empty blackness where Jack went in search.
he would have been one hundred and one yrs. wise today.
happy continuous drift-- may you always get a lift.

This changed my life--thank u jack and steve
Seriously..... I just heard the record and I'm completely in love
have always enjoyed his blend of formal and expressionistic language and something else I can't explain. thanks for the post.
When I was in College, my shrink, gave me a copy of " On The Road. I read it and fell in love with it. I spent one spring break, taking a trip to San Francisco. I ended up living there for 6 years, cos I wanted to see if it was as cool, as he wrote about in his writings. He wrote prose, but it's poetic...Even when he reads, you can hear the music in his words....
表情溢れるケルアクの朗読と声、素晴らしい‼️
You are right!
Jack Kerouac. Originalement Québecois, a grandi en langue française. Mexico City Blues" one of the best poetry books of the XXth century.
This record...I found when I was young...I just love his voice and the piano so very smooth love it
We need now Jack...
Thank you for uploading this video. It's so beautiful ...
What a gem!
Just discovered this man ,pure genius. The Belfast poet Andrew Beattie. Food for thought...
he was a genius lost in a world of shadows...I write a little myself, just like to float those words across the cream page, listening to the traffic purring past, and the cat dead now 2 years
Thanks for posting. These two guys were the hippest of the hip.
flatdisk u wanna read up on Allen before calling him hip
OMG, what a find. Thanks so much.
Everytime i listen to this i realize just how great these two are together, such screaming talent. theyre perfectly matched. Jack & Steve are sublime on this jem of a recording.. thankyou joe ♥️

This changed my brain chemistry.
Loved every second of it! ❤
Manifest Destiny didn't begin in mid 19th c as we were taught, it began the moment Jack put a font to teletype paper.
Thanks for posting.....remember listening to it years ago but could never recall what it was called.
I'll save the keys for samples but the poetry and the fusion of jazz music is so beautiful.
This is absolutely amazing! I never heard of Jack Kerouac and Steve Allen. I will search this album out and purchase. Wow!!
What a great poet.
Thanks for posting this!
This was great, so much better than the appearance on the steve allen show to promote this album (steve's demeanor/piano playing was almost mocking jack, am i right?)
Kerouac is in his element here.. i wish i could find/afford the vinyl
thanks for the upload!
A Wayyyne i thought the same but he treated all his guests like that it's his schtick
I bet it took a lot to just get Kerouac to show up... He seemed to admire him and want to promote him
これは、本当に凄いわ!

Oh man, what a treat!Thanks a bunch.
I like when he laughs
amazing..good work brother
Glad I found out about kerouac after being obsessed with hippies.
Love the Doors ,Jim you body of work will live on a 100yrs from now.
Tell Ray hello.
Even his phrasing sounds like bebop to me and its beautiful, i wonder what he thought about Trane?

Truman Capote called this typing... ha, like he would know
capote earned the right to talk a little shit. there’s always a place for competitiveness in art.
Can i be cool like you Jack?
Old Frisco with its end of land sadness...this is describing the indescribable, a job of work that can only be executed by rare Angels, discarded and misunderstood individuals who remain with us, only for a short poignant time. While they are here we begrudgingly accord them a little fame, a little money perhaps (not very often). CZcams the vast library of today's Alexandria, taken very much for our granted attention.
You got that right Kevin...
Ahhh. Mmm Yesss..
No one writes Kerouac like Jack

Thank you for posting this. Kerouac is brilliant!
Thank you for this
What a wonderful find.
is it poetry? or just a story told in a funny way. it all sounds like my day to day life IDK. seem like this is the sound my brain makes all day of my life. haha. I like it.
it’s technically prose not poetry! basically just means it’s kind of meandering descriptive writing (almost like it’s in the middle of story and poetry)

Perfect.
"not even enough h time to be disdainful..." Those are the 7 words that are the seed of the NEXT Beat Generation. That is EXACTLY at the core of what we are seeing today with anyone that stares more at their cell phone than the surroundings around them. Even if its piss on the sidewalk from a Tuesday night, its still artwork in the most tweaked form but yet there is a whole generation out there that is taught or conditioned or !??!?!? to ignore any impulse to appreciate that since it might deteriorate their standing in their family or...gasp(!) sorry if I am casting judgment but excuse me if you can't appreciate what might actually be more artistic than
shut up ya big old gobshite and go look at some piss stains on the sidewalk.
@@nachomanandycabbage9113 you don't know what you're missing out on until you've tried it.
@@nachomanandycabbage9113 actually you got your wish to come true. Sort of. Didn't even finish the last sentence or thought I had but at least I can even laugh at myself. 🤔😲😀😅 I think.
The bigger issue is why is it you feel as harshly as you do bout an observation like this? Seeing something you don't?
You are just observing , yet it’s not just “one generation”, there are some younger people who are more attuned to real life than many older people, who are not as much as they/we could be, do you get me? 🙏😀
Très bien Ti Jean!
Thank you so much!

The Mill Valley trees,
the pines with green mint look
and there's a tangled eucalyptus hulk stick
, fallen through the late sunlight tangle of those needles
hanging from it like a live wire connecting it to the ground
just below the notches where little Fred sought to fell the sad pine.
Not bleeding much, just a lot of crystal sap that the ants are mining in
motionless like cows on the grass, and so they must be aphids.
Percolating up the steam in the store provender and their bottomless bellies
as for all i know are bigger than the bellies of the universe beyond.
The little tragic windy cottages on the high last city wad hill
and today roosting in some hot dream above the tree-head of seas and meadow patch;
whilst tee kee kee pearl the birdies and mommums, mark and ululate moodily in this valley of peaceful firewood.
And stacks that make you think of oregon in the morning in 1928 when back was home on the range lake
and his hunting knife threw away and went to sit among the Ponderosa pines to think about love,
his girl's bare bodice like a fennel seed. The navel in her milk bun.
Shorty McGonagall and Roger Nolte held up the Boston Bank and murdered a girl in these old woods.
And next you saw the steely green iron photograph and true detective
showing black blotches in the black blotch running culvert by the dirty road side, not Oregon at all.
Or Jim, back so happy with his mouth a blade of grass depending.
Hummingbird hums hello
; bugs race and swoop; two ants hurry to catch up with lonely Joe; the tree above me is like a woman's thigh, smooth eucalyptus bumps and muscle swells
i would i were a weed
; a week would leave
Why was the rat mixed up in the sun?
Because Bodhidharma came from the west with dark eyebrows,
and China had a mountain wall and mists get lost above the Yangtze gorge
and this is a mysterious yak the bird makes yik; waulf waul wot sings the dog; blood blood blut below the homestead deer.
Red robins with saffron scarlet or orange-red breasts make a racket in the dry dead car crashed tree Neil mentioned.
Run out the road until you calyptus!
And it's all busting out indicating the prune blossoms.
And Bodhidharma came from the India west to seek converts to his wall gazing!
Ended up with Zen magic monks, mopping each other and one and all and other in mud Koan puddles
to prove the crystal void.
WOW
