I had an Upright MRI done ten years ago (for my pelvic area) and most recently (5 months ago) for my neck. It is the only way I can get it done. I get claustrophobic and have anxiety disorder. I traveled 3 1/2 hours away to NYC to get it done but it is worth the effort. I had zero anxiety.

I can't do it laying down I can't lay flat because I can't breathe well from chronic sinusitis and I have acid reflux. I can't lay flat when I sleep either I have 3 large pillows. I tried laying down and I started having trouble breathing and post nasal drip and when they put the things around my head and went to move me in the tube i yelled I can't breathe. I was so mad at myself I really need this done. They said they have another facility that does the upright MRI where I can sit. I'm going to try to do that.

I suffer from anxiety which results at times in instant panic attacks and I am claustrophobic as well....at one time I was able to handle a MRI and short elevator rides but no longer....when visiting someone in a hospital I will now use the stairs even for a lousy 2 floors but now even the stairs have started to give me great anxiety....the fear of the door I enter to use the stairs locking behind me and the door at the end of the stairs for me to exit being locked etc....and for a cylinder style MRI forget about it.......I was able to tolerate an MRI when i was younger ( 20''s-40's ) but the older I got the worse it became and now I absolutely refuse to have an MRI done....and than this past summer I started to have terrible sharp pains in my upper legs and my doctor told me the best thing would be for me to have an MRI of my lower lumbar......and he mentioned that I might be able to handle a stand up MRI......so I made an appointment with the nearest one to me here on Long Island which was about a 35 minute drive away and It was a world of difference and I was able to have it done with only a bit of anxiety but without having a panic attack or fear of no escaping......I was placed in a sitting position and in front of me was open with a big screen tv screen on the wall ahead if I wanted to watch TV. ..they had a local news station on but I requested the sound be muted which they did....and while the sides were close to me having it totally open in front of my vision field made all the difference in the world for me...along with my being in sitting position and not on my back .......it took about 30-40 minutes and only near the end did I start to have a feeling of claustrophobia but no where near as bad as the old style cylinder MRI......so for those like me who would rather take a bullet than to have an old style MRI I strongly suggest finding a place that has a Stand Up MRI......after experiencing one I wish there were more places that have them as the difference to me was like night and day.

I can’t take elevators either. I walk up the hospital stairs but I check first to always make sure the first floor stairs are not locked just in case the other floors are locked. I been there to after reaching each floor I check to make sure the stairs is open not locked. I like the standing up MRI but can’t do the head coil. I seen other standing up MRI without the head coil but maybe it depends on what is being examined meaning what part of your body is being viewed.

I just had my MRI two days ago. I have low back pain and didn’t like this at all. I didn’t find it to alleviate my fear of enclosed spaces either. The large open disc that floats above you on the other types of MRI machines works much better for me. My back was aching from having to sit up so straight for so long.

    • @694516

A lot of doctors prefer this style of open MRI because when you are laying down, the pressure on your back is evenly distributed throughout. When you are sitting upright, there more pressure on your back from gravity pushing down.

Totally understand! For me, laying down made me TOTALLY feel vulnerable and then having that f'n cage over your head just made it unbearable. With the sitting down, I feel more in control. Even the helmet allows me to see forward I believe. Forward open space. The think that would upset me I THINK, would be that seat going in further between those big magnetic discs. But I'm going to try it if my insurance allows it. I would also take about 3 mg of klonopin before. Valium doesn't help me. Well at least the 1 mg they gave me the last time I tried the traditional way. And I would need some one there to make sure I don't fall over because I would be loopy. lol. If anyone is going to do this, post here again. Let us know how your experience went. If I do, I'll share my experience. Take care all.

Can you do breast MRI with this type? I'm a heavy set lady. I tried getting it done with a regular machine, and it was squeezing my back and sternum so much, that I couldn't even take in a breath! They couldn't do the MRI! The breast MRI requires the ladies to lay on top of a piece that raises your upper body so the breasts hang down through the thing that raises you up. So, if you are a larger woman it is impossible! I found out I have cancer, and they really need to do an MRI so they can see how far it has gone, what stage, and probably a lot of other things. Between getting referrals, approvals, and find one that works... I'm terrified the cancer will be all through my body by the time I can get it checked! Please pray for me 😢🙏🏼

all in all a great idea, but that scanner look so narrow, i don't think my shoulder would fit inside it and i don't think i am abnormal wide :)
ban the magnets be moved to make more room

nope, once I was raised, tilted back and then sucked back into the machine with the walls squeezing me from both sides I had to get out. I'll stick with the new Tesla wide MRI's instead.

Why isn't this machine nationwide? Get rid of those old dinosaur machines that make patients uncomfortable and go to this one.

Because it's expensive beyond imagination (there are so many magnets, which require liquid helium for cooling to remain operational). Though, apparently, it's also capable of some unique feats, such a full-body scans in different positions (sitted, standing, bended, twisting), which normal MRI machines can't do at all (it requires patient to be able to move).

Daniel Yahudah Israel I just had my MRI two days ago. I have low back pain and didn’t like this at all. I didn’t find it to alleviate my fear of enclosed spaces either. The large open disc that floats above you on he other types of MRI machines works much better for me. My back was aching from having to sit up so straight for so long.

    • @beetlejuice6831

Because it is more expensive, needs more room, exam takes way more time and image quality is shit. If you're claustrophobic, then ask to be sedated. If the sedation risk is bigger than whatever you wanted to look for with an MRI, then the MRI wasn't needed.
Now they try to market it for full body scans. FBS is BS.

The reason that these aren’t more available is that the magnet strength isn’t as good on theses kinds of machines. The highest this machine will go is 0.6 Tesla, while the closed bore MRI machines can go up to 7T in a clinical setting. This machine is also limited to the kinds of exams it can do, so it wouldn’t be able to scan the more intricate exams like the other ones can.

American system: Get to sit up in a fancy scanner, but I’m sorry, your insurer doesn’t cover you for what we found
NHS system: Bear with us in this lay flat MRI and don’t worry. If we find anything you’re covered.
