In this video, I demonstrate The very delicate process of installing peel and stick wallpaper.
Peel and stick and stick wallpaper was originally never made to be a wallpaper. It was made for stickers and decals. Over time it became popular for people living in apartments, condos or temporary living situations because they could easily install and remove it. Unfortunately, speaking as an installer, peel and stick wallpaper (aka selfstick, temporary or self-adhesive wallpaper) is not as easy to install as advertised. In fact, because it's sticky on the back it presents its own sets of challenges that regular wallpaper doesn't have (mainly that you can slide the wallpaper into position).
Tips
1. Prepare walls. They must be smooth.
2. Do not put it on textured walls, especially ones with orange peel.
3. Do not take entire back plastic wrapping off (do it in stages)
4. Get help and do not try to hang it alone. You need 2 people ideally.
5. Use dry eraser instead of a typical smoother for MOST of the smoothing process so you don't damage wallpaper. This is very thin material.
5. Have residential home hair blower (not a heat gun) for air bubbles at the end should they happen.

Evening! What the kind of primer should be use on a cocrete wall? And what is the difference between vinyl and that wall paper??
Alejandro Magma no difference! This is super thin vinyl. Also , use roman pro 999.

Is it just me or is this guy doing the greatest Christopher Walken impression ever?
You are probably the 35th person who has told me that… I really wish somebody with a lot of money hires me to imitate him because I would love to hit it big
I knew he was reminding me of someone, but I could not figure it out. Nice job!
I was just going to make that comment. Great 'impression'!
Spencer Colgan Wallpaper & Painting : do you live in Florida? maybe if I know somebody that lives in Florida and needs to hire somebody I’ll recommend your CZcams
😆
Thank you for explaining to your helper what to do and where to place his hands and not yelling!!!!! I think many of us are scarred from getting yelled at by our dads and not understanding what to do lol
Love your comment. This video was a completely impromptu video. The young helper was the son of one of the sweetest people I have ever worked for… The wife of a gentleman who owns a big painting company. Two of the best people I have ever worked for and so I just meant that young boy and he was helping me and my helper was actually using the camera

Thanks to you, my walls will be primed and smooth, my installation will involve an assistant, my squeegee will be a chalkboard eraser, my pressing motions will be HORIZONTAL ONLY, my plastic will be NOT TAKEN OFF UNTIL THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT, and my corners will be tightly pressed. AWESOME TUTORIAL!!!!!!
Thank you Jess in Ireland. My roots are from County Mayo I believe.
He was going up and down the whole way until he started talking about going horizonal strokes 😆
Thank you. Now I don’t have to watch this man blather on.
A long circular dowling, wider than the paper, would enable you to slide the backing off bit by bit, every couple of inches 😀
@@philipmorris57a little painters tape goes a long way. Chamois cloth over the papering brush should do.
I wish every profesor I had were as supportive and team player as this man.
This is the best low key impression of Christopher Walkin I have ever seen.
You can use a 'chip clip' as a weight to hold the backing down as you peel it. The clip is heavy enough to fight static but won't let it spring back up and get in the way.
Same thought
Thank you so much Spencer - first of all and all, for your careful, honest and objective observation and comments on self-adhesive wall papers, not for the manufacturers, resellers, or acting as a professional installer showing a DIY job is so easy!
And your instruction speed and details both are good, tone is clear. Thanks again!
If you know other DIY work, please do more video.
Wow man, thank you so much, you are a business saver. I am a professional installer for about 20 years. And I’ve worked in hundreds of jobs and one thing I’m sure after this video. I learned couple of new things for sure. Keep up the good work Spencer. 🤗
I appreciate how he explains the reason why it doesn't stick properly and etc. So you get a better understanding how to use it and what to use it on, thanks for this!
This is the best tutorial on peel and stick that I have seen. Thank you! Will help prevent problems as the peel and stick is not cheap.
Nicest compliment I’ve heard all day. Please subscribe to my channel ruby.
I just used 3 clothespins on the back to hold the plastic down smooth and pull down. The pins kept the plastic film out of the way and nobody to work around
This was possibly the best tutorial I’ve ever watched. Thanks for all the great tips!
Sooooo informative! I am planning to use peel and stick for an update in the closet, and this is one if the best instructional videos I have seen.

Thank you for the video. Not only did I get a good footing on how to install this type of paper, I now understand the limitations and not to expect too much from Peel and Stick. It will work well for out temporary needs, but know that it will not be permanent.
Great installation tutorial! We all need Cal to assist. He did a fantastic job! Kudos to Cal!
Thank you Lisa; that young man was the son of the woman for whom I was hanging this peel and stick and she let me use his help. That’s why I didn’t know his name because he was actually the customer son LOL LOL LOL

We succeeded thanks to you. The best peel and stick installation video that I was able to find. Thanks a lot!
Your tip on the eraser worked great! I used a high grade peel and stick with a thicker backing that did not have the same static issues that you had with the thin backing, so I was able to install it myself. Thanks for the video, B.
Thx for the great help. I spent a lot of time getting wall flat and the bin primer is the ticket for great adhesion. I used to install window film on cars and homes . Was very similar and used my tinting tools
Spencer you are an amazing teacher. I would definitely send your video to some of these product manufacturers they would definitely hirer you as an ambassador to their products. You keep to the important stuff and you definitely explain it with perfection

I usually never make comments. But you deserved one, you are amazing! Thanks
Maren,
That comment was so nice and I greatly appreciate all the feedback good people like you leave me. It makes my labors worth it.
i really appreciate the thoroughness, very helpful
Good tips Spencer. Getting ready to hang a self-stick mural in my grand daughter's bedroom wall 84'x144". Like the eraser idea and will try it. Was thinking a piece of 1 1/2"x1/4" wood slat cut a little longer than the sheet width might help in keeping the unstuck sections of paper off the wall and help in securing it evenly using the eraser.
You done a wonderful job articulating the install. Very meticulous and descriptive, great job, wish me luck!
Great demonstration and explanation sir. Well done
Great video very informative just saved me from making several mistakes . Thank you
Excellent tips! Thank you for sharing. Wish I found you before I my attempt to apply peel and stick wallpaper.

I think you saved me a big headache lol I'm going to install some myself for an office space and I needed some solid tips. Thank you!
Eraser nice tip thanks, lovely job
Thanks for the tutorial. Instead of running to get a eraser I used both a roll of T.P and a paint roller. Worked great
Excellent idea!!!!!!
Thanks for the tip on using a paint roller instead of an eraser! I'm about to embark on my peel&stick installation and I have lots of unused paint rollers but no eraser. You just saved me a trip to the store!
So informative, I’m so glad I clicked on this one! Thanks!!
You’re so welcome!
Hello Spencer, these videos are so helpful I have a wall that needed to be primed. I painted it with killz primer and it has properly sealed. However now the paint has given it a slight texture. I know you have repeated to instal on a smooth surface. I was wonering if it is possible to simply sand it. Like others also love the “christopher walken” quality to your voice
Please make it smooth with a thin skim coat. Then prime again. Using a Purdy 3/8 nap roller.
Him: do NOT peel this off. Do NOT
Me: yes dad
Great information and tips for installing peel and stick wallpaper! Thank you. Cal with his Christopher Walken sound demands that you pay attention! LOL
J. D. I know ! Sounds just like him .
Omg every tip you mentioned is true.
I found out the hard way.
Wish I had seen your video before installing the wallpapers 😭😂
Fantastic!! I am thinking of purchasing peel & stick wallpaper but to have a professional install it. However, my walls are standard wallboard that has matte finish paint that was applied with a roller 25 years ago. Does this mean that I cannot use peel & stick without refinishing my walls first? If so, the gorgeous wallpaper I wanted from Germany may be too much trouble.
Chalkboard eraser. Brilliant!
Jennifer, I wish I could tell you that it was my own idea; but somebody else told me that. I’m glad I was able to help
Thank you for the tips. I recently put some paper on my counter and have quite a few air bubbles and on another project have a wrinkle. I am going to try what you say, wish me luck!
Looking to skim coat my wall. What primer is best for adhesion?
Thanks for making these videos! I was just going to try to put my peel/stick on a textured wall until I came across this.
I’m so glad you saw this video’. Please use Guards or Bins. Both are from Zinsser.
Spencer. Great video. Thank you so much for posting this. One question. When. you say prime the walls you refer to getting rid of the texture? You mentioned something about a primer also. Which one?
Thank you!

This video encouraged me to buy normal wallpaper and forget about using peel and stick wallpaper ever 😂
Great one shot presentation 🙌🏼
Great instruction, thanks! Regarding the air bubbles: say the installation is done, and you notice a bubble, could you not take a needle and make a tiny hole in the bubble to allow air to escape as you re-flatten? The hole would be almost invisible I would think.
Wait 48 hours then do that.
Awesome illustration gentleman.
Hi Spencer, your explanation is very detailed and precise. Greatly appreciated. I am about to do a project for my mom's house, except that it is tiled. How would you propose that work with to ensure that the grouting lines between every tile does not have that line of air bubble gap?
You cannot proceed without making that surface flat. You can apply an even smooth layer of compound in a Skimcoat fashion then hang peel and stick after primer
@@spencercolgan thanks Spencer.
Hi there Spencer! I'm hooked on your videos. Thank you for them. I've purchased peel-n-stick, simply because I love the design, but it's not available any other way. It will be installed on a wall very much like on this video. My question... I'd like it to be more permanent. I've sanded and primed the wall. Should I pretreat the wall with Gardz, or maybe even should I use a weldbond/water mixture? Any suggestions? Thank you so much. Debra
Mam. Thank you for watching.
Smooth your walls. Then use gardz after smoothing. Let dry overnight. Then guess what. Using clamps on a table, pull wax backing off of your peel n stick and using a roller, apply clear heavy duty paste. Yes. Paste! A thin layer making sure you cover every square inch.
Thanks for watching!

Very good information shared. I ESPECIALLY liked the info shared on using an Eraser. I've installed peel and stick wallpaper A LOT and used credit card which I found would remove some of the color off of the wallpaper and I really don't care much for the white plastic tool you shared. I like the use of using it for the very reason you used it. New subbie here, TFS
Great video, Spencer. At the end, I was like, no!, show us that last step of cutting those edges straight without marking the wall with a blade, etc.
Question Spencer, I’ve hung buzzie felt sound proofing that had a sticky back and what we did to help us adjust each piece was paste the wall prior to hanging which helped us slide the piece on the wall and adjust it to where we needed it. Can you do that will peel and stick?

Hi, thanks for your video. I’m trying to re purpose a shelving system to use out doors in my backyard. Besides paint, I’m using vinyl wallpaper, peel and stick, for the sides and back of the shelving system. The wood is some sort particle board. What should I use to seal it, and protect it from the Florida sun and rain? Will sealers adhere to the vinyl? Should I use a water based polyurethane first over the paint to seal the wood, and then apply the vinyl wallpaper? Will the wallpaper stick to the sealer? I also would rather have a matte finish, but don’t even know if any of this is possible. This is my first project.....so I am a bit lost. Any help would be appreciated.
Seal the wood with BIN feom zinsser. The vinyl won’t stand up to the expansion and contraction of outdoor use.
I had a 130 year old Victorian and hung a lot of wallpaper over the 40 years I owned it. Boy is peel and stick different! Thanks for giving me sound instructions I would have done it wrong.
Do me a favor call Lynn go and take a look at my other peel and stick videos because this does not cover everything. Put my name and peel and stick in my search on my channel
Thank you, sir, for this great instructional video. I feel confident about the shown process, but I must admit I'm anxious about trimming the excess with a scalpel. I'm afraid there's no way to avoid any contact with the underlying surface, and I wouldn't want to leave marks.
Please. Have confidence

@@spencercolgan will do. I sent my mom the link to your video since like she’ll be the applier and I’ll be the one pulling back the backing. Most likely
Will it lose its stickiness or create bubbles overtime on high temperature (eg. tropical country)?
What about trimming the wall paper edge/edges once it is up. Is it a simple X-Acto knife and a straight edge?
Good tips. Good job! TY
Great video! But what about the trimming of the excess? Do you use an exact knife or a box cutter? Any trips or tricks to getting the right?

Can you apply wallpaper over a reflective thermal insulation sheet on a cold uninsulated wall?
Hey Spencer. Great tutorial as usual. Have you ever removed one and if so what did the walls look like afterwards?
Never removed sir
Hello. Great video. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I have a bathroom that currently is wallpapered. Can I apply the peel and stick over it ( the wallpaper is smooth not textured)?
Great question; the answer is: no way
@@spencercolgan Thank you for the answer. Very disappointing to hear I can’t put it on top of an outdated ugly wallpaper. I am unable unfortunately to strip the existing paper. Thank you again.
Looks great! Can you use this removal wall paper over top of existing wall paper? Would you consider this 'cost effective? How hard is it to remove and is there any residual 'adhesive or anything left on the wall when removed?
1. You cannot use this paper over existing wallpaper.
2. It is not cost-effective.
3. It is not hard to remove since there is no glue being used in this video for this material.
4. There is no residual anything left on the wall when you remove it.
What is a good primer to use prior to hanging the peel n stick? I'm in CA so we have Home Depot / Lowes.
Roman 999. Or zinsser guards sir!
Great video! Can you put peel and stick wallpaper on freshly painted wall? Eggshell finish?
Great question! No. You have to wait for the paint to fully cure. Peel n sticks say 3 weeks!!!!

Spencer, do you have any experience with this product being used in extreme heat? Thinking about our RV but also thinking the heat in the RV while stored may effect the adhesive? Thanks
I would not be concerned with extreme heat. But what I would do in that situation anyway yes to go to the paint store and get a mold inhibitor that is used for pain, then I would get 1 gallon of Roman 880 paste, and paste the wall in your RV with the mold inhibitor mixed into the paste and then I would hang my peel and stick over the wet Paste after removing the backing from the Peel and stick 875 stop and then I would enjoy my Peel and stick Product.
Very helpful - thank you 😊
Great video! Thank you! I'm so glad I watched it before my peel & stick application on Thursday. I'm planning on using it on wood paneling that is painted. Do you think it will stay in place or fall off the wall? I guess I could fill all of the wood gaps, but I'd rather not destroy the integrity of our mid-century modern home.
Kris...
you need to prepare that would be for you put this type of wallpaper on it, unfortunately.
Here’s want to do; prime your panelling first with BIN. Unfortunately, it get more involved; skim coat into those grooves to fill them in. Then use wallpaper paste, Roman 880 and apply it to your wall covering yes, use paste.
Thanks miss Zara.
Love the eraser tip!
Great video!!!!!! Makes it look easy. The real question?!? Can I do it????
I love your videos! Do you know where I can buy the same wallpaper from this video?
Thank you for a nice compliment. Please visit www.wallpapeboulevard.com
Geekwraps tools has plastic felt edge squeegees that can be used with this material also when squeegeeing I always angle my strokes so that to push the air down or up depending on where I started.
Did you then cut in the edges with a carpet knife inside of the molding?
His interaction with his kid was honestly the best part.
It's very similar to working with vinyl and transfer paper. I'm not sure if this technique will help with this but it's helpful to tape the top with painter's tape and creating a hinge to peel the plastic out from behind.
Thank-you for posting this Spencer. Question did you trim around the edges to remove the overhang at the Moldings?
Great question! Yes. I did. There was about 2” all around.

Spencer could you please tell me more about wall prep. Is it better to use satin or semi gloss behind peel and stick Mural? Can I use a special product, wall paste on the wall instead of repainting the wall that will help the Mural stick better? I am installing a Mural on a wall in our church that is @ 8 ' x 12'. Areas of the wall will be repaired and plastered first. If we can put a wall preparation product over the repaired wall instead of paint that would save time and money. If you have a product to recommend please let me know what it is.
Please CZcams Spencer Colgan peel and stick and see my other videos on the subject.
Amazing video! All the others seem like garbage next to yours. I do have a question. I am doing a foyer that was painted two years ago. The walls are very smooth. Do I need to prime? Or do I want to leave it alone since it is already smooth and cured before applying peel and stick?
Great question! The manufacturers of Peel N Stick. are starting to come out with different directions based on the different surfaces on which this material is installed. Therefore, each of them has their own sort of spin on it… Please check your directions if you purchase it, and then go by the directions because they are being manufactured according to different wall situations
