What I like to use in my chain is…
1: Surgical EQ
2: Vocal Rider
4: Noise Suppression (for room bleed)
5: De-esser (4-5k starting point)
6: Compression (catch peaks)
7: Compression (musical rhythm, groove)
8: Upwards Compression (word clarity)
9: Enhancing EQ
10: Harmonic Enhancer
11: Doubler/Widener effect
12 De-esser (mildly time overall hiss)
13: Limiter (mildly tame overall peaks)
Reverb:
Long- Hall, no attack, 3-5 ms
Medium- Plate, 10-30 ms attack, 1.5-2.5ms
Short- To taste, no attack, 5-1ms
Note: I add a ducker to the Long Reverb to tuck it behind the vocal to keep the vocal prominent and up front in the mix. 3-6 db, 6-10 ratio.
Delay:
Long Delay: 1/2
Medium Delay: 1/4 or 1/8
Short Delay: Slap delay
Note: Play around with filtering 300-5k. I typically go around 500-3k. Also, sometimes I ping pong (H-Delay) and do a lofi mode with analog off to take away hiss.
Parallel Compression:
HPF out the lows, Compress the hell out of it, enhance back some body or 3k clarity.
Note: Use Limiter last to catch peaks and make vocals less plosive and pumping sounding (unless you like that)
Extra: Sometimes I use a bus for the widener and/or harmonic enhancer on vocals instead of the actual chain.
Hope this helps.
-Jesse
Thanks for great tips!
Thanks Jesse!!
What plugins for each?
@@mulamoon You can use a wide range. The main thing is using the proper techniques and the right tools for that particular song.
My go to's are
Fabfilter Q3
SSL Channel (gates is good too)
R Comp
R Vox (has gate too)
1176 (For peaks, it's a fast compressor)
CLA for musical flavor
Vinyl from waves
J73 is nice
Vitamin is nice
Abbey roads saturater slices through
I love the Neold Warble from plugin alliance too (Takes harshness off vocals and sits it nicely in the mix with some color)
L2 end of vocal chain always for me
H-Delay, Manley Delay, Pro Tools Delay for slap is nice
R-verb and any other reverb
CLA Vocals is nice for a little vocal master towards the end sometimes. You can get a little sub tamed and add bite and some sauce with the reverb and delays and widener. It's nice to polish whats already there.
Hey bro. Fantastic. I am just wondering why you have the vocal rider 2nd in your chain vs at the end? I am never sure where is the best placement
It’s dope to use this after compression then going into more compression 💯👌
Yes
I have it, and it is great!! Before Vocal Rider, my vocals disappeared in the mix unless I used a ton of compression, which gave the vocals a kind of grainy distorted sound. Now I don’t have to compress so much and they’re clearer. Still upgrading my mic and equipment but this was a huge step in the right direction
I love it. Use it all the time
That’s the good stuff👍
Yea, you can just throw it on your track as the first plugin like a regular fader rider but to get the most out of Vocal Rider route all your instrument tracks into a buss, have that buss being sent direct into Vocal Rider as a side chain, and have Vocal rider on your main Vocal Buss/Folder...that way your vocals are being side chained to the music, that is what the 'music' knob is for, to set the amount of your music tracks you want going into the vocal rider ... has Waves ever explained this?
very interesting. Is there a video about this somewhere?
@@tinagel0 watch?v=M8rrqW4a5JE
this is the video i found when trying to figure it out a while back. It works, i have used this in Reaper doing the same thing.
@@maplefoxx6285 This was a very helpful Video. Very interesting. Thanks a lot
You're super cool, thank you
@@lazarushatchette3978 aw thanks.
The best
I love how they didn't showed the rendered audio wave 😂
They showed the automation lines instead which is way more helpful
But it works,
I’ve tried on many projects and it only works about 10% of the time, for the most part makes things sound somewhat unnatural (and I’ve tried using it both as a clip gain fader or a post compressor touch-up fader) so end up doing all my clip gains and automations manually for best result 🤷♂️
What’s the difference between regular and live?
Live has less latency
Personally, I always think less is more the more simple your mix the better If I have to dump 30 plugins into my tracks just to get the sound I want something went wrong during the recording process to begin with. I feel its important to have a treated room, a good microphone, good preamp, good cables, good word clock, good singer too just being honest here or rapper someone with flow and energy and some good monitors my "chain" is going to be very simple I do attenuations and corrections I don't feel anything needs to be added to the voice i also don't want to take away anything i simply shape and fix areas that have tiny sounds or mud to make them clear notice i say clear i didn't say i add gain to a frequency I simply shape around the area I hear lots of "boom" and "conening" i don't boost anything with my eq if i need to hear something louder I will use my fader and automated fading so Corrective EQ + Compression compression is used to even things out and can also be used to add grit or smoothness I like to use it as transparent as possible I don't like to color my sound I will just level things out so that even the low parts are as loud as the loud parts and the loud parts do not peak and remain within a good audible range without clipping from there I will De-ess. But I must admit I did skip over some important steps which is cleaning the vocal tracks by using rx and taking out breathes and really I like to leave them in but minimize them depending on the type of genre in an rnb for example breath can be useful to create intimate vibe where for pop or rap it might not be as desirable then I analyze the track and because I record the room first I use that as rendering for use with noise reduction tools I like my vocals clean + clear After EQ+COMP+DE-ESSING I will use my ears and my faders and panning knobs to place things where they need to go the last thing I do is print the entire session up to 3 times with different db intervals one at -10 one at -6 and a copy at 0 db in wav format then I start a new session and use ozone 9 if not I will send it off to an actual mastering house because thats where the real magic happens
True
Punctuation goes a long way
@@bullit4170 not when it comes to mixing audio
The thing is less is more because every extra step could decrease your quality. I would not use 30 plug ins tonget my goal bc then it would sound like shit
did they literally say idiot proof lmao
It be hard using this plugin
Can I use this to add air to a vocal ?
Not really. This is meant for volume control :)
Now, you don't even need your fingers to produce anymore!
Somehow it tends to sound a bit unnatural in my productions
Despite the interface being so simple, I could never really get the setting to sound natural either. Even looking at the example it feels like it boosted way too much on that first half of the sample. Look at the middle, why is it cutting the quiet part and slightly boosting the loudest part in the song?
same
The times that i used this or even mv2.
Its doing the wrong fader rides for me. So i say Nope
Because it is unnatural and still people use it
Your emotions may have been impacted by using this plugin in an unnatural way.
Vocal Rider vs MV2. ....edit... Which one is better??
Two different things with their own jobs. Try out both and see which works best for you.
@@virgilhughes7837 Honeslty Cliche but true. the main thing is tone. M2 will add some body and can be treated like a low shelf eq along with upwards compression. Want more noticed clean translation go for the VR, want some color and beef, go for MV2
MV2 works better.
I agree. The upwards compression on MV2 is lot easier to dial in the correct settings and sounds much more natural
Use both
I use mv2 all the time and ur so right 😸😸
MV2 can also bring up low noise level depending on the recording of course.
aint this just a compressor?
Yep, it’s just another upwards compressor. If u truly want the real thing then hit the studio. No plugin at home will get it right, that’s the difference between analog n digital
Pluing name please
It's Vocal Rider: www.waves.com/plugins/vocal-rider
Idiot proof is insane, very powerful plugin.
That is, only if you’re willing to pay for it every year
I think he could've dialed in those settings better thoá
just use a compressor.. it does the exact same
Everyone who bought this plugin got played playa. Any compressor with the “hold” function can produce a one for one replica of this 250$ software. A CZcamsr did a test and the signals between the pro c with a fast attack and medium release with the hold function turned down and the vocal rider were identical. Come on.
Idiot proof 🤣
Fruity balance n peak controller so simple .. no need of this costly plugin
This is literally no more than $50
@@capo900 even 10$ is to much 💀
@@coldfuture sounds like a personal problem
can u link a tutorial for fruity balance n peak controller?
WAVES
Using vocal rider on a song is really dumb and ur trash if u do. I love waves. This plug in is better served for content creation and podcasting
Wtf is this ?
