  • The Most Capable Active Protection System to Defeat the Widest Array of Threats
The Iron Fist Light takes active protection to the next level. Iron Fist Light is an easily configured add-on system applicable for armored platforms from light 4x4 vehicles up to medium and heavy Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFV).
The System’s hard-kill concept is based on intercepting the threat by launching a small warhead and initiating it at a safe distance from the protected platform, at a precisely calculated moment, and defeating or destructing the threat through a shock-wave effect.

Even a tiny bullet creates such a penetration shock wave when being fired on a car for instance, that can be seen . Granted it’s tiny so we are talking in several cm at best.
also...unlike the movies, modern infantry does not run side to side with a column. They are safely tucked inside till they deploy.

I agree with your assessment. My thoughts are that unless the discharged unit fired to intercept a LONG way off for an APFSDS, it being really close like it appears in the video, would the detonation be enough to knock the projectile off of its initial trajectory or at least disrupt the projectile enough so that it isn't allowed to strike straight on, thus defeating its ability to penetrate by virtue of the kinetic energy it would possess then lack by skewing the trajectory? Sort of like having a bullet "keyhole" on impact.
The delivered energy would be significantly less but from what I could detect in the video the penetrating projectile still seemed to travel straight and not deflected to any great degree.
But that is just my $0.02 on the subject matter.

No and yes. Yes in the sense it is an APS like trophy. Also no because trophy fires a wall of explosive pellets like a big shotgun. It also uses an IR emitter for detecting threats. IR is slower than the iron fists radar which makes the trophy struggle agaiant high velocity penetrators. Iron fist fires a projecticle like a grenade with fins at the incoming threat to destroy or divert it. It uses radar over an IR emitter to detect threats wich is far faster at detecting a threat and plotting an intercept which allows the iron fist to reliably knock down even high velocity penetrators.

But it sounds logically, as in naval and air combat missiles actually deploy active sensors and jammer, and jammer-jammers xD
Iron Fist is a low tech solution against an 20 year old problem, so it might have been okay for defense against some oldschool Taliban ... if these not recently had been supportet by the US army with somewhat 5-7 billion dollar of modern military equipment. These are going to be even more important than first thought. With the ubiquity of drones these are going to have to be adapted to work against them as well. My guess is that they are going to have to find ways to make these as cheap as possible with as many rounds as possible so they can be used across all kinds of vehicles and have enough rounds to deal with swarms. It would probably be easiest to make something a bit like the c-ram only much smaller with the radar and gun all in one thats automated and uses cheap proximity fused shells or shot gun style ammo. Its going to be interesting watching how this field develops.
