They lost @BYU to open the season who at the time was a decent program. Then climbed back into the Top 10 but lost @Notre Dame which pretty ended any hope of a repeat

From 88-91, the four best programs were, Miami, FSU, NOTRE DAME, Penn state. They were at a level that other teams couldn’t compete with. Just like today, where it’s pretty much Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and maybe Georgia. As you can definitely see in this clip. And this was an off year for Miami who ended up 10-2 that year.

I was working with the Feds and i spoke to a canes fan who watched the game while a student at the Federal Goverment Training Facility in Glynco, Ga. Trainees from Texas make up a large part of the student population and they don't try to hide it. Come Gameday for this game the TV room was packed with Texas trainees minus two Cane fans to include the guy that told me this story. He said that the Texas students were all decked out in cowboy boots, cowboy shirts and huge cowboy hats to make sure everybody understood they represented Texas. You saw what happened above the canes humiliated the Longhorns and the cowboy contingent looked like they were at a funeral. He said the skunked away by the start of the 4th quarter.

This was as big an ass whipping as can possibly be given. If they hadn't acted the fool with all the penalties, the score would have been 75-0. We were flat out Pirates that day and Texas had no clue what they were in for. In their own stadium. Flat out old school ass kicking.
