    Hi Marion! I’m Vietnamese, married to a Dutch/German Caucasian man. He doesn’t eat Vietnamese food (sad, but I love him regardless), and I adore Viet food. This looks absolutely yummy! I can’t wait to make it. I live in Southern California and there are many Viet supermarkets 1/2 hour north of us. Will shop for the ingredients to make soon.
    Btw, I started to binge watch your other videos and am loving all your recipes thus far. I looked for your cookbook, but I can’t find it anywhere. Suggestions? Thanks.
    Lastly, just found out your birthday is 9/29! So is mine, but 1974. Blessings from the US!

    • @JoyJonas
      @JoyJonas Před 2 lety +2

      Although fish sauce has a unique flavor profile and there is no substitute, you can add a touch of tamarind paste and a little soy sauce. The Spruce Eats says that 'tamarind has a "complex flavor profile," especially when it's concentrated. It's sweet but sour, citrus-y but peppered with notes of "smoke and caramel." so it will add more complexity and mystery than soy sauce alone.

      @doodahgurlie Před 2 lety +1

      Just swap out the papaya for unripe mango or use thinly sliced cabbage combined with shredded carrots. You can also make the very thinly sliced cucumber version, too. Peel and cut the cucumber in half along the length, de-seed it, then very thinly slice it. Toss salt on it for about 15-30 minutes, then rinse it off and squeeze out excess water.
