What I usually do is just spin around in a circle to slow down my kinetic energy.

Or just, yknow, stop using the elytra? There’s no need to go through armor pieces, just press whatever button triggers the elytra to stop flying and it’ll stop the kinetic damage.

Oh, I've been doing this for years. Mainly just cause it was fun to fly really high up and switch to the chestplate, plummiting to my death and activate Elytra again just on time to zoom away again.

it's a thing I love to do, sometimes I just use a firework, go straight up, switch to my chestplate, and then at 50 or so blocs in the air I switch back to my elytras to not die of fall damages, I just love that thrill
