On the 9x9 farm, you can also use the water on the middle to waterlog a chest both so you don't fall in and because it's a really convenient place to store the crops

If you can, put lily pads on the water sources instead of slabs. It’ll stop the items from falling into the water, and it won’t make you bob up and down like slabs will.

As an NPC, the bandits are coming!
for the record, crops *only* care about if there is a crop adjacent both above and to the left of it. if it's to the top and bottom, it doesnt care. if it's to the left and right, it doesn't care. but if the same crop is to the left and top or right and bottom or anywhere else inbetween, *then* it gets a grow speed penalty.
in the early days of minecraft farming, this is why so many people thought having rows of water actually sped up crop growth. it wasnt actually the row of water that helped but instead not having the same crop in that position where the water is. more water source blocks have no affect, ONLY the irrigation level of the block the crop is on does and that can be maxed out by a *single* water source block in a radius of about 9 blocks.
crops ALSO get a speed boost for each fully-irrigated farm block next to it, meaning having a ring of only irrigated farm blocks around all your crops will technically give you the fastest speed for all of your crops, but overall it's probably better and gets you more fully-grown crops to just fill out those empty farm blocks with some extra crop to grow.

Quick Note: Sugarcane used to grow faster on sand. This was because due to a bug with sand updating it's state because it could turn into an entity, those updates affecting the growth of sugarcane by about 1.2x.
This has been patched out 3 weeks after it was discovered.

Honestly, i use the second tip anyway but i had the idea to make a giant square full of wheat sooooooooo
I just do it the same way the villagers do it minus the wood and in the ground. Have 1 line of however many of each (Wheat, Beet, Carrot, Potato, Pumpkin, and Melon) and then for Sugar Cane I make a square around 1 block so that’s 4 pieces and sometimes expand the water for more or just add a block of water behind any of the Sugar Canes planted but leave space for 1 more Cane so it’s 8 and not 7
