- How to read AC or air conditioner condenser unit wiring diagram / schematic. I go over 4 AC condenser wiring diagrams and explain how to read them and what all the symbols and charts on the label mean. Most of the time, the wiring diagram or schematic can be found on the inside of the condenser electric panel access door.

My gracious audience! :) I apologize for making such an incredibly long video but I do hope it will be worth your time! Get some snacks ;) If you could please like this comment if you actually watched this video all the way through I would much appreciate it! And if you want to go above and beyond, reply to the comment and tell us what you thought. That will give me an idea of whether I should ever do something like this again. Now allow me a brief moment to share the backstory. :) This video took me a whole week to make, frankly I didn’t realize what I was getting myself into. This stuff is harder to explain than I thought. (kudos to all the HVAC teachers) Normally the video editing software I use, takes around 3 hours to render and export a video file. (I use a laptop, nothing fancy) This video took 35 hours to export. I thought the computer was joking but when I checked 4 hours later I confirmed that it wasn’t. Laptop was humming like it was preparing to pop a vessel so I put it next to an air register so it can relax in the cool breeze when the AC comes on and left it alone for the next day and a half. Fortunately, everything ended well and the video is finally uploaded! But since it was so long CZcams flagged it and I had to wait another day for it to get reviewed. So needless to say, if my viewers deem this video as not worth the above mentioned effort, then I am definitely not even going to consider doing something like this again heh. Thanks for reading and watching guys! My subscribers are all awesome!!! Seriously. I rarely get any nasty comments. Thank you for all your positivity and support! Stay cool
Wow. What laptop do you have? Dell? Or something else? What year? Does it have Windows 10 or something older? Even though my channel is mostly about fans and speakers, I have an extensive knowledge about computers too.
@Fans, speakers, and more Thank you for the interest! I have a 2012 Samsung, Windows 7, Intel i7 processor @ 2.2 GHz, 4 GB RAM. After this video I decided I need to stop being cheap and upgrade. I am thinking of getting a desktop/tower computer with two monitors (so I can see the whole timeline when editing) or perhaps I'll just get one but it would be that long curved monitor.
@@WordofAdviceTV Fantastic! Just make sure that the graphics card you get is optimized for video editing and not, for example, gaming. I would recommend something like an "Inno3D GT 730 Graphics Card". In the case where you DO get the card I recommended, I would research to see what computers are compatible with that card. Here's the article I read to get the recommendation: www.toppctech.com/best-graphics-cards-for-video-editing/
@@WordofAdviceTV Actually, wait. That card I recommended........well, it's not in stock at Amazon.com. What video editing software do you use? If it mainly uses the CPU, then getting a more powerful CPU would be more beneficial.
Haven't watched the whole video yet but I will end up watching it multiple times, like I have to several of your videos. Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos. I'm an hvac service helper and your videos are life saving. Your hands down the best hvac youtuber. The other ones literally put me to sleep. I've been wanting to write you a comment saying thanks for all you've done for me. Thanks man!
Wow this is the best wiring explanation video I learned way more with your video than with the teacher in HVAC school, thanks a lot,God bless you
You ain't "NEVER"!!! lied some schools sometimes just in it to get the check. SHALOM

Thanks man, watched it start to finish. I know you hear it a lot, but the effort you put into this video is NOT going unnoticed or unappreciated. This is gold for someone like me!
A lot of guys struggle with the electrical part. I'm 41 a new HVAC, and you're teaching me and I'm learning off of you. Maybe there is hope for an older guy like me. Thanks Man!
Me im one of those guys! but I am relatively new to this trade
Outstanding. This video aught to be a principal training source for the HVAC trade. I have shared it with all my classmates.
You taught me more in this video than my teachers taught me in 2 years of trade school. Keep it up!
Thank you for watching! Glad to hear you got a lot out of the video :) Good luck in your career, I am sure you will make it big!
An excellent teaching video. Very very beautifully explained. Learned more in this one hour video than in my 4 years of Engineering.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
This is a excellent video! If the length of the video bothers you just watch it in sections 10 minutes here, 10 minutes there. Remember its levels to everything get in where you fit in.
@Moe P Thank you! That's actually a great suggestion, it may be better not to attempt to watch it all in one setting :)
@@WordofAdviceTV You're welcome! If you find yourself have to cater to people of short attention span you can turn your hour long video into a series like part 1: it can be 5, 10, 15 minutes, part 2: it can 5, 10, 15 minutes or how much time you set your video to.
@Moe P That's a good idea as well! Thank you! I will say though, from my previous experience, it seems like people are more likely to watch one long video instead of a series of videos. But I am actually hoping I won't make any more videos over an hour long :)
@@WordofAdviceTV Whatever you do I wish you the best in all your endeavors! Thank you for all the great content hvac god!
Getting back into HVACR after a long hiatus and this was a great refresher for me! thank you kind sir for sharing your knowledge and i will be attempting to show my neice how to tame dragons!
This was my 4 year olds favourite video today which he found (this is among his favourite channels) and watched many times all the way through. This man is his hero
Once again you have made an extremely helpful video. I now will be able to take on my next project.
Wow! A feature length movie! Your CZcams dissertation! A wiring marathon! A university class! A vehicle to stretch your video production skills! A test of your endurance as well as your viewers' endurance! A project that probably surprised you by its length and the amount of effort you expended! Aside from all of that, it showed you in a light that made you shine even though your lovely face was absent for much of the time. Saint Francis of the dragonflies. I hope your efforts reward you well.
Thank you very much Johannes! That was a borderline poetic comment :) You have been applauding my videos for a long time now and I much appreciate the support! Thank you for the encouragement, confidence, high expectations, and all the time you spend on my channel. May your own endeavors favor even better then my own!
Thank you sir for sharing your knoweledge, I'm 55 years old taking the HVAC/R course at a trade school, and everything makes more sence after I watched your videos, God bless!!, and thanks for making it so easy to understand!!
How do you like the class did you graduate yet ? I start the same class on the 24th at trade school to and pretty bad in school I want to do a carrer change tho and thought this would be a cool trade .
@@jonnygang5838 The class is good, yes I finished the course and EPA certified, the workbook they had at the time was terrible, poor quality and expensive, other than that good, Mr. S is a great instructor.
@@raruna6758 are you working hvac now how do you like it?
@@jonnygang5838 I'm not employed on the hvac field right now, I don't know what state are you in, I took the course in Las Vegas, therefore my comment about the workbook, was about the one I got at the trade school I took the course from.
26 minutes in you are a GOOD INSTRUCTOR! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
I am so impressed with your ability to impart your knowledge to others of us who are DIY by necessity. Thank you so much and keep it up.
It's Sunday and this is the best 1:30 minutes that I had today
Watched all the way through and now understand schematics much more clearly. Thank you very much for being such a help in the Hvac industry! 🙏🏼
ive graduated from a basic online hvacr program and have a fat textbook, and the wiring diagram part i could never understand. This video helped me out SO much and thank you for this and all your other videos
Thanks a million. I always fear these schematic, but you ease my fears so much now. Tame the dragons 👍👍
If only I had a printout like the one presented in this tutorial in my class..I now have a clear understanding of the process thanks!..
It sounds like some tech schools need to step up there game if the commenters are telling the truth. You definitely did a great job explaining it completely. Well done and keep up the great videos, thank you.
Taking the time out of your day to explain all of this is awesome. I’m currently working as an automotive technician & I’m interested in changing my career path to an HVAC Technician. I started watching your videos to get more information about the industry. Thank you for your time.
thats actually funny because I just turned 18 and was bout to get signed up for a Auto Tech school but Im now signing up for HVAc tech
I'm working towards an hvac degree in college and this is helping me alot. You are appreciated more than you can think.

I'm a current student enrolled for an HVAC/R 2 year degree program at a local community college here in San Antonio, Texas and my professor recommended this video for schematic interpretation. Thank you very much for the video. I've never been the textbook kind of student, I need a visual or hands-on study to help me understand it and this video does it perfectly.
The last 7 minutes of the video are very reassuring and should give confidence to anyone who may be having a hard time understanding the wiring schematics. The real-world application seems to be much easier to understand (visually) than written out in ladder & pictorial diagrams.
How to train a dragon was a bonus!
OMG, long time watcher, first time commentor . lol
WHY AREN'T YOU TEACHING? You are so good at it! UNLIKE, all the other HVAC videos out there, You don't assume we already know things, just because you do, or because you think it's a given that we know it, or should know it. Those times when you go off script (and apologize for it) seems to be the things I needed help with the most!
I think guys are visual and hands on learners. When you added the last diagram and showed what each thing was on the AC unit, it tied it all together! I actually can look at a diagram and do more than pretend I know what it all means! Cause NOW I REALLY KNOW!! You don't know how many hours of videos I watched to learn what you taught me in the first 10 minutes! lol I'm a maintenance man at a hotel and because of your videos ,, I have fixed several HVAC units! Also thanks for explaining about bypassing switches with a jumper. I knew you could but not exactly how. This video was simply the icing on the cake that put everything together to where I now I can comprehend it all.
ps I watched all the commercials to hopefully get you better adsense pay. lol AND I will be buying a couple of tshirts to support your bad ass teaching skills~!! I can't thank you enough!!!
Haha your comment was great! I even read it twice :D It's nice to hear that you got a lot out of the video! And that the extra details I explained were actually beneficial. I appreciate you watching all the commercials although I am not sure if that impacts adsense at all. (whether someone watches 5 seconds of it or the whole thing) Haha and thanks for buying a T-shirt! That merch stuff is something CZcams kept urging me to do so I quickly put those together and got the shirt shop launched. (The whole process besides the shirt design and description is done by TeeSpring and CZcams) Anyway, glad to hear that you are now the wiring diagram expert! Thank you for leaving the nice comment and may you become the best maintenance tech in the county!
Fantastic reply!! YOU spoke for all of us that watched this video and FULLLY appreciated it!!!!!
Thanks for your clear presentation. Electrical part of hvac can be overwhelming. I love how you break things down and explain different scenarios. Great job!!!!!!!!!
Watched twice 😜Wow.as a new homeowner this helps a lot to understand how this works, supper helpfull to troubleshoot if need it. I might not be to fix it 😅 if something fails , but ill try my best
Thank you very much... I feel more productive watching your 1hr 25mins instruction clip than watching a good movie. Very well organized on how to read AC schematic diagram. I understand better now. Thanks again and looking forward to more video production from your channel. 👍👍👍
You're welcome! I'm happy to hear I didn't waste my time making the thing. :) Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thank you for the explanation. My Carrier unit is exactly the same wiring as the unit you walked through. I am trying to install a SureStart soft starter and your vid really helps!
Hi Jay. Well done videos. I teach at a college in Northern Alberta and with the teach online, I am having my students look at your videos rather than listen to me talk. Well done, basic videos.
That's great! Glad to hear that my videos are helpful! 👍👍👍 Thank you for showing my videos to them, I appreciate that!
This is an Excellent teaching video. You’re deserved an ultimate appreciation for all amateur DIY like me. Now I have a deep understanding of the system working as a whole, from schematics to components identifying. It helped me to troubleshoot my own. The more valuables are the knowledge that you took efforts to pass down to the community. Bravos for the sharing dedications and devoting the excellent teaching strategy.

Very high quality and valuable video that is much appreciated. I found the 5 or 10 min videos are not much use even for a beginner with little to no value. Thanks
Thank you! Glad you found the video useful!
This is the best flue gas analysis video on the internet, thank you.
I am engineer from UK and was in USA for holiday where I had to find a fault on AC system and your Video was a blessing , Thank you for simple to understand circuit diagram, Never seen a AC system before and I passed the test , The fault was the Capacitor which on the Start Coil, Thank again for your easy to understand explanation.
Great video! He's playing everything in depth and at the end you showed the diagrams and showed how the diagram compares to an actual AC unit . Great job!
You explain so thorough. I have learned from you more than when I was in school I did not got it.
Your video is literally better than my 5 years of learning at University, thank you so much
You are an excellent teacher, you provide valuable information in such a clear easy to understand format. Truly enjoy watching your videos.
Thank you Ken! I appreciate the comment!
You are my hero Jay...excellent tutorial for how to read AC wiring Diagram. Keep it up my friend and Thank You so much for teaching us! ALOHA!
Thanks a grip brother, helping me all day I'm able to understand the diagram but struggle drawing my own ladder diagrams.
You and your videos are awesome! You've taught me more in the 2 years I've been in the field than any of the senior techs in my company. Thank you!
You're welcome! Glad to hear the video was that helpful. Good luck with the HVAC career! :)
Well done. Second time watching since first watching when this originally came out. Got more out of it the second time around and appreciate you doing an excellent job with explaining several types of schematics!
Amazing information! I am so thankful to the HVAC education you have provided to everyone. Everything makes perfect sense. It makes my life as a home inspector much easier. HVAC is one of the hardest things in home inspection because of its complexity. As a generalist, I really desire to know more about it and not to be misleading.
Hey Jay, great class, brilliantly taught, better than my hvac class
No one Can not Explain in such a simple way by the way I was an accountant like you but and took an electricity course
Jay! I'm currently going to a trade school here in Las Vegas and I just wanted to thank you sooooooo much for all your videos it has helped me tremendously. God bless you brother and your wife in your new journey in Hawaii, you have made HVAC-R so much easier. 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
Good for you .
This is the best HVAC control Video I have seen. Thanks a lot. It makes more sense now. I will make sure to keep it to review from time to time.
Great video, I am 72 year old retired self trained (with some help from other techs). My main expertise is in electronics. Had training in radio and tv repair when i was 18 back when ic's were first coming out. Only do HVAC for family and friends. Have found that a lot of HVAC techs will go out and just start putting freon in before they even check to see if compressor is running. ALWAYS check why it is not cooling before just saying it is low on freon. Nice to have good refresher course. All techs should watch your video. I have had companies want to know who I was because they wanted to hire me to do their troubleshooting because the customer would be able to tell them what component was needed when the tech showed up. I live in rural community and do not have truck to stock parts and closest HVAC parts store is over 30 miles away. No charge just call HVAC tech and tell him what to bring when he shows up.
RETIRED AND STILL WORING TO HELP OTHERS
You are a lifesaver. May you continue to bless us with your amazing videos and knowledge.
U ARE EXCELENT TEACHER AND EXPLAIN VERY WELL THANK U
Mr. Word of Advice TV,
Thank you for such a great collection of videos. Do you have any videos:
1. Tell your story for how you got into HVAC.
2. Advise other for how to get into HVAC. (Training costs, expected wages, etc etc).
Glad you liked the videos! There are two videos that are along the lines of what you are asking about:
1. How I started: czcams.com/video/90NlDovmMBM/video.html
2. HVAC wages: czcams.com/video/Rb14BPzcQ7g/video.html
Very informative sir...from the Philippines...
Thanks for this video,is a very good way to be familiar with AC ,how its works ,and how to follow up some troble shooting, thanks again
Jay, you are so exceptionally gifted. I do RV Tech work, and after watching how to find a short, and this one I am going out tomorrow to troubleshoot one like in this video ie age and low cost, when installed. I'm going to download and print HVAC schematics and sequence the flow of current. Many thanks, Jay.
Thanks a million, thanks for you time and dedication , We appreciation for all you do..
wow! what a fantastic video. You really took your time and demystified these wiring diagrams into something I can now understand. You are a great teacher. Please continue to make videos and consider becoming a teacher as well. Stay safe.
Thank you for explaining. 1 hour of I appreciate you for that. Thanks.
This is the best wiring video I have seen. I have recommended to my friends. Thank you so much.
Thanks for making this video! You have an impressive ability to make this easy to follow.
Hey, Your teaching technique made it alot easier to understand. I am not an electricians but do have an interest in understanding how to read and create wiring diagrams. Thanks
Awesome video! Thank you so much for sharing your extensive expertise, and doing it in a fun way. My only quibble, and it's a small one, is that you used the same color (red) for both the low (24 volt) and high (120/240) volt wiring. I hope you keep making great videos like this one, and I hope you and your family are enjoying Hawaii. - Cheers - Jim
Great video. Thanks man, AND, that dragon taming was a cool thing to show my grandkids, double thanks.
It’s very long but worth watching.
Glad you thought so! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Hey, special thanks for blowing up those diagrams, large! I'll work through this long video, it may take a few days, but I'm sure it will be worth it.
No problem! :) I tried my best to make it legible since I also don't like videos where I can't make out what is being talked about. Hope it will be worth your time! Thanks for commenting and watching!

You're awesome brother. Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge. Love your videos
Oh it is so nice to see four different examples. In the first, the start winding of the compressor and the start winding of the fan only operate when starting, and as you say the start cap is in series. Interestingly, in the following three examples, they use dual 'auxiliary' coils and capacitors for the fan and compressor, both of which are used during run and start! In that case, the start cap is in parallel with the whole motor, and during the run phase the dual run caps remain in series with both auxiliary windings. This video cleared up many misconceptions I had, thanks again.
Awesome! :) Glad to hear the video was helpful! Thank you for watching and commenting/explaining what was cleared up for you!
