How to Read Furnace Wiring Diagram

  • How to read a furnace wiring diagram. In this video I show how to "read" or follow the wires on a gas furnace wiring diagram. I go over a schematic diagram and a ladder diagram and explain how the different components get energized and it what order. The diagram I am using is actually a pretty simple one compared to many of the others out there. I selected this one because it would be easier to follow along on it. If you were out in the HVAC field though, preferably you should have the furnace operation manual along with the wiring diagram. The manual will tell you which components get energized, in what order, and how long they are energized for. As I explain in the video, the wiring diagram is not straightforward and unless you know how the furnace works, it will be very difficult to figure out the wiring diagram.

Been working in the field for almost 7 months and yesterday I came across a problem where I didn't know what to do, and watching this video now I realize I might've ordered the wrong part 😁. MY name is Gabe and 6 years ago i made a career change from installing Directv to AC Installer in Palm Springs California. Installing ac in the desert is hands down the hardest job I've ever had seen that furnace coils are in the attic so to change one out takes a good 6 hours at about 130 degrees. It isn't for everybody Ive recently switched from install to service and i have learned more from you and your videos than i did at the technical school i went to. You make it very easy for me to understand and I'm really impressed with how knowledgeable you are at such a young age. Good job dude and keep up the good work. You probably helping people more than you know.

Yes, you did a great job to create this precious lesson for everyone.
Would like to share with your audiences. (free free to edit as needed.)
I resolved my Furnace problem without changing a part but fix an open in the 6-wire thermal state cable. Without your lesson, I would have no idea how to track and judge where is the problem but changing parts.
It's an 93' Comfortmaker gas pack. Problem starting 3 yrs ago, getting worse until this winter it finally wont ignite at all, March-2023.
At beginning, symptom happened only in very cold weather, around 30-35 F. It resumed functioning after I cut breaker off for 5 - 10 minutes, and it would last the whole winter.
It got worse year after year, more frequently, yet trouble happened in the same temp range.
I checked and suspected all Limit switches, CS-IM, and even transformer.
Ordered those parts to "give it a try". While waiting the delivery, I watched your video and it opened up my brain with accurate knowledge.
I started all over previous checking steps, and identified "the thermal state signal was not present at control Bd terminal." I removed thermal state from wall and connected close to gas pack side, finally, narrowed down to the point -"white line" was open.
Issue fixed and I can enjoy a warm sleep for the weather supposed to be cold again around 28.
    Thank you

Ben, I'm a subscriber and have watched so many of your outstanding CZcams videos (as well as others) and have to comment today that you are the KING of HVAC troubleshooting.
First of all, your videos are produced with viewers in mind rather than self-promoting for profit or acting like a celebrity. You’re a knowledgeable instructor and articulate with a calm voice that’s professional and confident (not a bunch of ums etc.). The exemplary content indicates the time and effort that put forward in rehearsing, preparation and editing of your videos. There’s no excessive “blah, blah, blah,” background noise, distractions, or crazy music. Your videos are interesting, auditorily crisp, visually appearing and focus on the title’s objectives with a balance between repetitive info & assuming viewers’ prior knowledge. You accomplish this by referencing related content videos available for viewers to consider. You present simple and clear simulations, actual components, real-life situations and include graphics and text highlighting important info, safety issues, key points, confusing content and alternative methods for troubleshooting.
For all this, I thank you for helping HVAC professionals as well as the DIYers like myself.

Perhaps not much about the high end new stuff but years and years of experience does make a difference. I've learned some really cool stuff from really grumpy about-to-retire techs. You said the high limit switch goes to #5, it looks like you connected to #8. I could be wrong though. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your wealth of information.

Yeah.. Those connections are close to each other and I was using thick markers which doesn't help.. I was indeed wrong, the two wires from the limit switch actually go to 11 and 6. I just looked at the paper version of it right now. What looked like a 5 to me was actually a 6 and the 5 is next to it. Thank you for catching the error!

Assuming you live in southern Florida. Nice there early and late in the calendar years. Hot and humid and uncomfortable in the summer obviously. The state college I attend had a link for this video, but I see all the other great videos you have put out there as well. I'll be watching more of your videos and I have subscribed to your channel. Thanks for helping out by making these videos.

Been watching your videos recently. I’ve been in the field for 3 total years but on and off with oilfield work. I’m very confident with Condensers, fairly confident in furnace and control board troubleshooting, but I would like to see a video on heat pump troubleshooting AHU and the actual Heatpump itself. That’s where I second guess myself for some reason

Wiring in HVAC in general is still pretty overwhelming for me. I'm gradually learning more and more. I know one day it will all just click for me, but for now I'm still learning.
