Shooting Harman Phoenix 200 in Hanoi, Vietnam | A Brand New Color Film

  • Harman Photo (Ilford) sent me over a couple of rolls of their first ever color film, branded as Harman Phoenix 200. I took these rolls to Hanoi, Vietnam and shot them both while walking around the city one day. It is a contrasty, quirky, punchy, and oddly saturated film with minimal dynamic range. I would definitely consider it a niche film stock, but it is very exciting that we have one of the biggest players in the film photography industry deciding to dedicate time and resources into an entirely new product.

    While I agree that the results look more "experimental" and won't replace any Kodak stocks anytime soon, I think as a community we should embrace this effort and maybe just buy a roll as a nod to Harman that the initiative is appreciated and they should keep at it. We can't expect film prices and supply to improve, get mad at Fuji for discontinuing one stock after the other or rebranding Kodak stuff, while simultaneously not giving new players (Harman as in a new player in color film) who work on improving the film-landscape their shot.

    So rad to see you got your hands on this stuff man! And sick that you did it in such an exotic location haha! Gonna be keeping an eye out for it to hit the shelves around here so I can give it a go myself, the levels of contrast look unparalleled but as you say, nice to have something outside of the traditional market to tinker with!

    Since almost every YT film photo channel has dropped a video on Dec 1 giving for this film first impressions to detailed technical analysis, there are a lot of mostly sample photo videos to compare. I think it's fair to say the Brae got screwed by his lab scans. While the film is fairly saturated and contrasty, it's nowhere near the excesses shown here. It's also grainy beyond reason and is said to have quite low resolution. Consider it a prototype work in progress. On the other hand, trying to sell this cripple for $13 a roll raises Harmon almost to Cinestill class when it comes to abuse of the customer. Omitted from this review was that the film lacks the traditional red-orange color correcting mask of nearly all C-41 films. This may make it easier to scan, once folks work out the required scanner software changes, but it will make the film relatively useless for the small minority making RA-4 prints. Also, it uses a polyester film base, so off limits for Lab-Box users.

    Plenty of mixed results here but the images that feature a lot of shadow sometimes looks great; redolent of many older East Asian films I've seen. I have a feeling this stock would do wonders for a night-time shoot in somewhere like Tokyo with all the neon signage. A super grainy fashion editorial comes to mind.

    • @BraeHunziker
      @BraeHunziker  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Good way to put it! It seems as though more neutral results can be achieved through home scanning on a mirrorless camera or dslr. Some people might enjoy this "cross processed" look, however.

    @confrontingphotography4815 Před 7 měsíci +3

    I don’t think what you are seeing are the “quirks” of the film, the way the shadows are getting crushed to black in these images looks to my eye to be more a matter of the scanning. If I had to guess I’d say these were done on a noritsu with automatic adjustments to favor the highlights. There is a very good chance that if you scanned these at home using something like Silverfast, you would get a much broader tonal response. Never trust lab scans unless you are going to an experienced, high-end lab that is capable of doing hires scans without any adjustments.

    • @BraeHunziker
      @BraeHunziker  Před 7 měsíci

      There were definitely adjustments made by the lab. Almost every lab is going to make adjustments on your scans to give you a balanced image. I could scan these at home with my Sony a7iv to get a more neutral photo, but the majority of people are going to be getting their rolls scanned by a lab, and so I felt showing these images directly the way I received them from the lab would be the representation of what people can expect. And these results perfectly align with the way Harman described the characteristics of this stock: contrasty, quirky, punchy, vibrant, grainy, and a "cross-processed vibe."

    • @confrontingphotography4815
      @confrontingphotography4815 Před 7 měsíci +3

      @@BraeHunziker I respectfully disagree to the extent that using bad lab scans totally changes the nature of the review- it's a review of the scans not the filmstock. There is a huge difference between "Punchy" and crushed. (I say this as someone who's shot film for 40 years and supervised color correction in Hollywood for 10.) you are right, knowing what lab scans might look like matters, but it's only part of the story.

Harman said they’re still figuring it out, and hopefully they get it at a better formulation, but you’re right about the price, it’s disappointing. I think most people should be doing their own scanning anyways. Great video and review.

      @@BraeHunziker Yes, I live in the Netherlands and I fly by so from Schiphol, where they have CT scanners. Those are even worse. but I take 3200 ISO with me purely to kind of force them to do a hand check

    I shot some film in mexico recently and my camera got slammed by condensation from the humidity and movement from my AC cooled room to the warm morning. Are you having similar issues? and if so how do you combat said issues? :)

    • @BraeHunziker
      @BraeHunziker  Před 7 měsíci

      I've had my Pentax 67ii brick up from condensation. It's hard to combat it in environments like this. I keep a big microfiber on me and try to wipe down my cameras as much as possible then put them in my camera bag when I'm not using them. But at the end of the day you're kinda rolling the dice with these old film cameras.

      and oh shucks, I guess I need to get a new (to me) film camera! Canon F1 here I come!

    You really need to scan the negatives yourself to get proper result from these. The lab scanners punch the contrast button way too hard to compensate for the blue film base.

    Damn, I feel kinda bad that one of my favorite film photographers was in MY city and I didn't know. When did you go? I hope you had a wonderful time in my country.

      Hanoi was just incredible. I can't wait to return! Unfortunately, I had some lingering food poisoning from Thailand before I got to Vietnam, so I didn't get to see as much as I would have liked. I will most certainly be back, however!!

      I love VN. I plan to go back next year. Fortunately, my best bud is Viet and his family treats me like family. Fantastic country...amazing sights, food, and the people are unbelievably wonderful...wherever you go.

      People have been getting better results by scanning this film with a mirrorless camera or dslr it seems, but not everyone has a full home scanning setup obviously...

    I pretty much left the scene and watching videos because of the price. Film + scanning here sets me back $35+ per roll. Just no way to realistically do this hobby anymore
