As a native speaker, it makes me realise how difficult it is to become fluent in everyday English. The idiom varies so much from place to place, as do the accents..... 's hard innit? 😀
English is very easy. The problem is that native speakers don't pronounce words well, especially when talking about Americans. They pronounce words as if something in your mouth is preventing you from speaking.
I need you help dear
I lived in Manchester when I was a kid, lost the accent now sadly, when I listen to the accent again now, boy it's so difficult to listen to
Yep would never know this until u meet a non native speaker
What's obvious to me is utterly confusing to them
It ain’t that hard 😜
I can understand you perfectly without subtitles and it makes me feel amazing
The moment when people begin to understand a foreign language can be called a real miracle.
I was taught English in school from age 7, but English is not an official language in my country, so as you may expect, it was treated as a second language (because for everyone, it actually was). And during my 11 years of formal English studies, never have I once heard the rule about avoiding the usage of prepositions at the end of sentences; frankly, we were taught that way to begin with (like right here)
I am not sure if this is taught down to the present, but it certainly was 25 years ago.
Same, it's considered second language except most people still doesn't understand english yet.
I have experienced, that a some series of school books have different ways to teach. When I was starting to learn, we were taught whole phrases first and learned the short forms later (I will not learn. - I won't learn.)
Today they already start with the short forms, but then it's sometimes harder to learn I think...🤔
I grew up in USA and therefore English is not an official language in my country either :)
Me too. I'm 40 and since primary school i used prepositions at the end of the sentences..🙄
Thank you, Lucy!
yes
Thank you Lucy, this video is really useful for English learners. I didn't realise that I am guilty of using elisions and contractions in my daily conversations until you mentioned it in your video.
I love this teacher, I don’t know why everything has turned easy and enjoyable. ❤
Thank you so much.
I'm in love with your accent ❤️.
Love from India 🇮🇳.
You should totally make this into a podcast, Lucy! Excellent job, as usual! Greetings from Italy!
I am a native english speaker, however I find these videos very entertaining and informative regarding what I can do to make my speech more understandable to non-native English speakers, as well as the strange nuances you pick up as a native speaker.
I love you Lucy and your charismatic way of teaching! Keep up the excellent work and thank you so very much!
I love these videos it's always a pleasure to see how well you explain things to people.
I grew up bilingual, speaking German and English, and I always found it confusing in school in Germany how strictly we had to adhere to the textbooks to get a good grade... I had a grade 4 in English consistently, lol.
Lucy you're really hardworking and dedicated teacher, love your all videos and you too ❤️ You're the best CZcams English teacher 😘

Great video! As a Swede I was taught English at school from an early age, yet I've always found it difficult to understand native English speakers. That was until I realised that I was always thinking Swedish when listening to English people talking, like translating every word I hear to Swedish to understand what was said. So I stopped doing that and instead started to think English instead, listening with an English ear and not with a Swedish ear, and in that way I could understand native English speakers way much better!
one of the main reasons that discourage me from studying English and trying to get better at speaking it is to think that no matter how much I study, I’ll never be able to talk as fast as a native-English speaker. that way, there would be no chance I could compete with someone who has English as their mother language for a job or something.
have you ever thought that way? if so, how did you send this horrible conception of incapacity away?
@@friggedickinson7214 thank you!! I will. guess it was better than a one-hundred-word text.
That's great that you've been able to improve your English by thinking in English. Currently I'm trying to learn French, and I want to get to the level where I can think in French without translating to English (I have yet to get there though).
I find your English impressive, I imagine you worked hard to get to the point you're now at. Your English is so good, I want to offer one little correction to a phrase you used. You said at the end "way much better," which sounds kinda funny to English ears. You can say "way better," or you can say "much better," but not "way much better." Those two words "way" and "much" can't be put together like that.
Like I said before, your English is amazing, I hope to attain that same level in a second language some day. Cheers!
@@ozmorfgamereviews Thanks a millon, for your answer and for correcting my errors! Much appreciated!
I've studied French too, actually. Also in school. But only for three years though, and I've never been so into being fluent in French (even if that would be great as well!).
Of course, the method I used to understand English better demands that you already know enough of the language you wish to improve. But I still believe that at least one of the keys to learn and "get" a language quicker is to think the language while listening to it, and not your native tongue. To me, when trying it, it was a mindblowing experience! I thought about it, and tried it by watching an UK talk show clip on youtube, and I was ashtonished how my English improved when I "switched off" Swedish in my brain and switched on English!
Thanks again for your message, credit and boost, and I wish to you good luck with your French studies! I hope the technique I used may help you somehow. Cheers!
@@catallystic I'm sorry if I came across as harsh towards you in my first response. I was in a hurry and read your message too quick and answered it even quicker! Now, I see I must've seemed quite obnoxious. Not my intention at all. My apologies!
But anyway, try the method I described and I can assure you that you'll notice positive differences! And the more you practise by "switching off" your native tongue and switch on English when eg. watching an English TV show or Film, the quicker you will see a change in your understanding of the English language. At least, that worked for me!
About competing with native English speakers when it comes to work opportunities, I would say - without living in any native English speaking country - that it may depend on what profession you wish to have. But as I understand, many companies really do appreciate diversites in their organisations, weather different backgrounds and dialects. Many companies of today see it as a strength to reflect the present society within their organisation - and since our society today is global, well, then there you go! So maybe that's where you'll may find your strength where your "weakness" may in fact be your edge! And I really do believe your English is more than good enough already if you wish to try applying for a job in a native English speaking country!
Good luck! Cheers!
Lucy! You’re amazing!
I’ve been recommending your videos to my students.
I adore your British accent, it’s the one I use in class ( I’ve been listening to British music since my early teenage years and I was in Brighton for my training course for two months so Ive had the accent in the genes 😅) and my students go “your accent is different “ as they’re used to hear American accent from previous teachers or English with no connected speech nor contractions. Keep the superb work.
❤Tunisia
Thank you a lot. You provide not only useful knowledge and skills, but also charming, sparkling, optimistic energy.
You're the english teacher I would've wished to have in school. Though the one that formed my interest in the english language wasn't half bad, either. He would once a week record the BFBS morning news and bring the tape to class to have us listen to native speakers. I enjoyed that, quite unlike my fellow classmates...
Living in Scandinavia when growing up I was taught proper English before going to school and learing the curriculum English taught here and I often got into arguments with my teatchers because I was taught every day English instead of the curriculum one first. Still kept the one I was taught first since that's the one I've been used to from the beginning.
could you have confused curriculum with colloquial?
発音が綺麗で、聞き取り易いので勉強が捗る!
Not sure why this was recommended to me, but it's always interesting learning about things that native speakers just implicitly do. My favourite example is adjective order - I had no idea this was a thing, even though I was doing it perfectly.
I caught Lucy up in 10 minutes. Thank you so much for this helpful tutorial as always! I started speaking in English after meeting you and now I'm very confident in English it's because of you that I started speaking in English with everyone, I was afraid that everyone will embarrass me because of my English accents. I've a good confidence and I can talk in English with everyone from all over the world and I hope to come to the United States soon.! Always for Lucy

Delightful to understand fast English speaking, Miss Lucy.
I'm Brazilian, and i decided to learn English by myself and, it took me some good 5 years to figure it out all that "spoken English" aspect of conversations, i think it's very important to understand tha in order to express your thoughts properly in English because, when you don't, it's amazing how much people look at you asking themselves "omg, where did you came from, 1985?😂", and that can work against you on a conversation. First channel that i see this aspect of the language being even talked about, just recommend your channel to one of my friends trying to learn the language as weel, your channel is great! Thanks for the knowledge
I really, strongly needed to be called "lovely student" today. Thank you Lucy!

Great choice! :)
Thank. You madame ❤
Ur style of teaching is so loving
I studied in a course in my town and finished in 2016, since then it's been difficult to find someone to talk in English, altough I teach one or two children in a year. I wish I had found your channel long ago.Well, your tips about not finishing a phrase with prepositions were so valeable, because in the course where I studied they didn't teach such thing which's why I tend to finish some sentences with prepositions like: who do you work with? Thanks to you I know I must say: with whom do you work? But I also know it's rare to see someone saying that perfect and correct English. Everytime I watch TV series see this kinda informal use.
I'm a beginner at English learning, I love your all tutorial video, it's beneficial in learning English. Thank you so much. please forgive my mistakes
you're so amazing Lucy and your content is fantastic. thank you for it.
Perfect I love the English language and I wanted to fine-tune my advanced English because I learned everything by watching everything in English without subtitles. Now I've visited London twice and Ireland once but here in Germany nobody can speak with me on this level. I look forward to taking your test. Maybe I'll even try out the service to get a native-speaking teacher if I can afford it 😅
Loved learning from the lovely instructor Lucy. I love Lucy's British accent. 💖💖💖💯

Your accent is clear and soft. I understood almost all words. By the way nice sweater :)
One of the best things from my school years is that we were able to learn English from elementary school. So I'm learning English since the age of 9 and now I confidently understand most of the movies, TV shows or any videos without struggle. Fun fact: Lucy seems pretty slow to me.

(and I'm very proud that I understand everything what you said even without looking on screen! I made an online test yesterday. 50 minutes: read and hear. C2... not so sure about this, but so proud))))
That's very good and if we connect with you and understand
Audiobooks with your pronunciation, please 🍰☕
I'm used to everything here, but slangs. However, the toughest thing about hearing is related to this, although being a more broad subject:
1) How can 1 recover himself after not understanding a word?
Until a decade ago, after not recognizing a word, I used to get lost for the rest of the phrase. I only got recovered once I understood that the phrase had finished. I got better on this when I lowered my expectations about the "I must connect all sounds" chore.
I guess something alike happens to MMA fighters. Since it's a sport that 1 can finish a fight without getting hit, some fighters try too hard to never get punched. So when it happens, they got so stressed, that their brain shut them off, making them fall likely at the 1st hit. While those who accepted that they may eventually get hit, keep awakened on the entire fight, even when punched several times.
2) How to understand how likely an unknown word may be written, in order to isolate it, and thus not getting lost on the rest?
I guess this only improves by knowing "fonemas" _(Google Translator please help me: phonemes)_ .
I'm french and I discover your channel just now and I'm amazed the way I can easily understand you Oo
Thanks a lot for making this video❤ it helped me a lot to clear some of my confusions

That's very good and if we connect with you and understand as per accent.
I related to this title so I came to watch and wanted to throw a piece of me out into the void. Im a native English speaker and I speak incredibly fast, its an attribute people have to deal with when they first meet me because they cant understand me. Majority of people eventually get the skill to it, some get key words or context clues and a small amount never do and a very tiny faction have 0 problems.
Ive taken to watching information videos at 2x speed for the past year and Ive learned that hearing everyone talk that fast brings me slight comfort, I use to joke that everyone talks to slow and now I don't know if its a joke anymore.
Very pleased with the way you facilitate the English language use. Plllllllz more videos on idioms. ❤
