  • Why are mountain bike tyres so confusing? Finding the right tyres for your mountain bike can be a real headache. There are more genres of bike than ever before and more tyres, too. The plethora of tread patterns, compounds and casings for you to wrap your head around (and wrap around your wheels) is enough to get both in a spin.
    In this video, we explain why it’s important to get the right rubber for your bike, why tyres are so confusing in the first place and beg the bike industry to bang their heads together to make life less tiresome for us mountain biking punters.
    We’d love to know what you think, so leave us a comment down below!

    I think the main problem is its so hard to sort/filter to the type you want on the main retailers sites. Filter by in-stock, 29, 2.3, soft, double down you might get a 27.5" 2.1 soft, 26" Double down, 29" in 2.3. Or the companies might just not post the full details on (Amazon its a mess) you have an title saying super soft but nothing in the description and the photo showing soft.
    Lets not forget stock of tyres waxes and wanes so it gets really hard to get your preferred set up front and rear..
    And after all of that there seems a fair bit of complaining of manufacturing defects with some brands (tread wobble). As a recent returner to mtb I never heard of that before and spent ages trying to work out why my tyre wouldn't seat, I refitted it 4/5 times, high pressure to pop the bead, it was only when I bought tyre soap and marked the wobble could I see the tread was just wonky..

    I think they also use their labeling to make it a bit difficult to easily compare competing tire brands by labeling alone so you continue to use their brand.

      Never thought of it like that!

    The right tire changes the game completely! I ride cheap tires for the road And specific off-road for the downhill rides you really get what you pay for! So if you are committed you get the stability and grip the tire market can provide!I also think the standard of prices reflect quality as I don't expect my cheap tires to last but am surprised when they do!😃

      They do make a big difference! Modern tyre tech isn't cheap, but so worth it for the added grip and confidence!

    To be honest, they're not that confusing: just go for Conti tires, take the ProTection-option and the rest is self-explanatori: from RaceKing to CrossKing to MountainKing, Baron and Kaiser, you can see the difference in the thread. Also: ride two or three different ones and you'll learn from experience what fits what conditions.

      Conti has an entirely new range of tyres and compounds and casings out, now it's the Argotal and Kryptotal and friends

      @@zakkane2814 oh wow, you're right! Thankfully the XC tires are still the same. I liked the names "Baron" and "Kaiser" more than Kryptotal :(

      Their naming structure did make more sense than some others, in logical terms anyway!

    It would be nice if they did that, but at this rate I am happy I can even get minion dhf's in my tire size.

    Schwalbe are experts at this! All you need to know is a diagram with their casing and rubber options.

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  Před 8 měsíci +1

      They do make it very easy to understand. Perhaps Pirelli could follow their F1 tyres? Soft, medium and hard?

  • @Ghostina1

    schwalbe is on the other hand totally grap in makeing tubless... so better a bit more digging and reading than having a shitty tire on your rig !

  • @parkinkevin

    I totally disagree. I need a grippy tyre on the front and heavy casing and good rolling resistance on the rear. So far Michelin is the only brand that gets this

    • @bikeradar
      @bikeradar  Před 8 měsíci +1

      For sure we think a tougher casing out back is good to have, and many in the team would have a faster rolling rear tyre too. All comes down to preference and conditions
