It's not criticising the EU, he's just saying he stays here until he dies, he's a smalltown boy who can travel across Europe without a passport or much money if he wants to. He seems to be enjoying it here but it doesn't matter where he is, he still feels pain, cuz he is dealing with the loss of his parents and not everyone can be rich. The song is an ode to Europa and his father, who came from a small Frysian village and told him the world should be without borders, and he listened to him.. the last bit of the song is focusing on that bit.

This song is a dedication to his parents. The road with the windmill is at his birthplace where he grew up. Its all about breaking borders and explore your own world.

This song is a tribute to his father / Parents who passed away. Europa in Dutch means Europe. Pa or Papa means dad. His dad once told him the world has no “Grenzen” which could be translated to both borders (Borders are a man made concept) or limitations (Many people create their own limitations in their own mind). This life lesson inspired him to have keep having an open view on the world and live his life to the fullest without putting limitations on himself.
After his parents died he carried a lot of pain with him. No matter where on earth he was (Germany, Italy), whatever food he would eat (Escargots in France, Fish and chips in UK, Paella in Spain), he still carries this pain with him. In the end nobody but himself could deal with this pain and he himself must find peace with his losses. Only going through the grief and finding inner peace would put a end to this suffering. This song tells the story of him as an orphan trying to do exactly that.
Him creating this song was a huge part of this process. The line with Stromae / papaoute (which Translates to: Dad where are you), is followed with the words about how he wants his parents to be proud of him. He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them one day he would be there performing. Which is what he now did.

If you had watched it right until the end you would have seen the clue about his parents, that was the deep meaning of this song: you can go where ever you like and do whatever you want but you’ll never be able to really enjoy nor escape your sadness if you’re not able to work through your issues of the past. In therapy Joost literally needed to write down his feelings and after that burn the paper to work through his grief. The ones who understand the art this song is are so moved and proud of him 💙

IT'S NOT CRITICIZING EUROPE. What are you doing, man?! It's not a political song. The song name is a contraction of Europe + Papa (= father in Dutch). Further references to these 2 subjects: 1. He was an orphan at a young age. His father taught him that this world is his oyster, without borders. So he travels to many countries to escape the pain of the loss of his parents, but that doesn't work. No escargots, fish 'n chips, paella can make him forget. 2. He used to watch ESC with his parents. And he said that one day he would be on that stage performing. His father encouraged him to live life without limits and to go for it. The small boy with the note pad references to his father encouraging him to write poetry (his father was a writer) and now Joost writes songs and he has made it to the ESC ("you see, dad, I listened to you"). With the burning (of the house, picture, building/mill (his past, growing up in Friesland)) at the end of the video, everything comes full circle. He has made his parents proud and he can accept their passing, his past and finally move on.

I saw the interview Joost gave when the song was released. It's a letter to his dad, who taught him human made boundaries, but there are no bounderies. In the lyrics you can hear him searging for his father throughout Europe, but he can't find him, he wants help but no one helps him. He refferes to Stromea's song Papaoutuai whichs means Dad where are you?
When Joost was 12 his 'father died of cancer, tragically his mother passed a way a year later of a heartattack. He was an orphan at 13 years old. Very traumatising for anyone! So figurlarly his house burned down when they passed away. He was raised by his siblings and he hopes this song is a goodbye to the pain and grief he still feels for his parents.

Its funny how you create a whole story while its actually a very tragic song. For example papaoutai is french for where is my dad? Hé tells the story of himself as an orphan traveling around Europe to find happiness, but hé never succseeds. The burning end means that hé has to let his sadness go, because its not possible to keep it for the rest of his life.
It's so sad that this guy makes up his own story about the meaning of this song while it's so clear and everybody else understands it even without subtitles. Just by the ending itself.

Joost is just in seventh grade when his father dies of cancer. Joost was twelve when his father died of cancer. At the time, he was just in the first year of grammar school in Leeuwarden. Joost lost his dad at the age of 12, and his mom at 13 and became an orphan. He used to watch Eurovision with his family and told his father that one day he would participate..... he even was a volunteer at the Eurovision in 2014. After both his parents died he could not cope with the pain but remembered that his dad wanted him to be a poet, so he started writing and started his own youtube channel. His father also told him that borders are made up by people but that the world is without borders. Suffering from his tremendous loss, he started to travel and tried to create his own world without the borders, just as his father told him to. That's why he uses the European flag, not the European Union flag. But where ever he went, who ever he met, what ever he ate, nothing and no one could help him ease the pain. And he realized that he just kept on running from his pain. That's what this song is about. If you want to know more, please listen to his song 'Florida 2009' about a holiday (his last with his parents?) and the loss of both of his parents. Everytime when he sings this song at his concerts, he gets very, very emotional. The picture and house burning down is Joost saying goodbye to his grief.

I’ve seen a few videos that jump to ‘criticism on EU leadership’. I wonder if that’s projecting. Are those reactors from countries that view the EU differently? Anyway, it is funny hearing them think the opposite of what it means, a father’s value instilled in his son about loving all people and to think without borders.
