Denzel could have just taken her to the side and told her that he strictly wanted to stick to the script and not improvise.
That was the mature way of handling it. But he decided to shout and misbehave first. That was highly uncalled for and Ellen met him in the middle too. Honesty speaking both of them at fault.

This is not the first time actors and directors have butt heads, lol. That wasn't racial at all. They're putting too much weight on a decrepancy at work, lol. @@kayjay3264 An actor's job isn't to improvise, it's to show up on time and stick to the script. Some actors do feel the need to improvise once in a while to add something they feel might be missing BUT it's up to the directors and producers to determine if the improv should be kept or dismissed. Denzel didn't start the aggressions by telling her to stay on script, she did by yelling and insulting him. That whole "this is my set" shows her trye colors. She's an employee like everyone else.

Why share the story 5 years later like it is something to boast about. It is odd, all of a sudden these women are telling their encounter with Denzyl at the same time. Ellen is the executive producer. She is someone working on the show forever. Number one on the call sheet. Respect is a two way street. Why should only Denzel be given all the respect when the woman has worked forever to keep the show on air.
She in the podcast said - Denzel gave her “hand on ass” which means he lashed out. Now why you choose not to believe her is your call. But she used those words.
I agree that she also acted really poorly - but let’s not pretend that Denzel was not wrong in the first place. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

But that's in keeping with how some people treat Black entertainers and athletes. They love their work but don't see them as on their same level of human, even when married to a Black person, see Donald Sterling. In her case, I think it's definitely subconscious, though.
That whole nonsense with her not wanting to be with a Black man onscreen because she was dating a Black man was really telling. If a Black man is a man just like any other man, then what difference does it make, unless you're fetishizing them, in which case it makes more sense that you would shy away from dating one onscreen because of your personal life. She would never say to a White man that she didn't want to be in a relationship onscreen with him because she's in a relationship in real life with a White man.

@@deasiabrannon805 I’m just clarifying stuff here I’m not trying to disrespect anybody: is yelling because you’re the director okay? The way I heard the story in the podcast is she made a choice as an actor he didn’t like and he yelled at her. And she yelled back. Being a director doesn’t give you carte blanche to just yell at people. That’s not what directing is. So if the story is: she made a choice in a show she’s been a part of for more than a decade and the director disagreed with that choice, and rather than telling her he just yelled and she yelled back, then I think he shouldn’t have yelled at her, rather should have directed her in a different way.
Now what I’m confused about is: if she yelled at this actor as herself, and directed him, rather than make the choice in character (because the episode they were filming has a story in which Meridith would probably yell at this person anyways), then she shouldn’t have yelled at that actor, and Denzel was standing up for that smaller actor. I’m just unclear over what the case is.
Denzel is an icon. Ellen is a tv icon. Like that is the house her snd shonda rhymes built. And any director yelling at an actor is not okay. But if she yelled at another actor like not in character then I’m glad he stood up for him. I just don’t understand why people think it’s okay for a director to just “go ham” on people.
Hopefully this sounds respectful because I also want to acknowledge that Denzel is a Black icon and he deserves respect. But like… the queen of England can yell at me and I’ll yell back because it’s not okay to treat people this way. So I’m just confused.

@@deasiabrannon805 yes you are right, and also even if Denzel did scream at her, it was after she screamed at the other actor, while her character has a broken jaw and cannot speak... So she actually went out of character and screamed at her colleague, she couldn't ad-lib dialogue in that scene... Therefore, I think Denzel was right to remind her she is not the director, he is... Then she doubles down, by disrespecting him and calling him a MF... LIKE what, I really don't get how she thought this was a good story to tell 🤦🏽‍♀️

@@celinel.844 okay and this is the missing part that I wasn’t understanding, her character couldn’t have spoken to that other character in that way (or at all) because her jaw was broken, so the person who was being disrespectful was Ellen for literally just yelling at an actor who’s probably intimidated by her and Denzel. I really don’t think yelling is okay in a set or performance setting, performing is already so emotional that adding stress to that setting by yelling outside of character choices and acting just makes everything tense. Thank you for clarifying that for me.

By the time he directed that movie Denzel had produced & directed (& in some cases at least partially funded) multiple award winning movies & a award winning play. Give him his professional respect and then maybe later you can privately discuss your differences. And I don't think she would've done it to a big name white male director. If she did say anything, she would've changed her tone, language and attitude. It was just plain old disrespectful. Just say I'm sorry. I made a mistake and keep it moving. Don't make excuses. That only makes it worst. Because it's so much easier to forgive someone who acknowledges their mistakes. Since none of us are perfect.
