Thanks for that, brings back so many good memories! In the '70's, I was a Cat 1 SoCal road racer (actually it was called "Senior A" at the time). And in my spare time I was a grad student at CalTech. I sometimes did the Mt Wilson ride very early in the morning before going into the lab. When Mt. Wilson was visible (smog!!), it was strange to look at the summit from campus and realize I had been up there a few hours ago. Often there was a razor-sharp inversion partway up: clear above, dense smog below. Once I passed a Porsche Targa descending the Mt. Wilson Road: he simply wasn't going fast enough.
For a more ambitious ride, one could continue out the Angeles Crest Highway (SR2) to Islip Saddle (ca 7000'), descend San Gabriel Canyon Road (SR39) to Azusa, and back to Pasadena: ca 100mi? Sadly, SR39 has been closed since a mudslide in 1978, though once I carried my bike across the gigantic slide. You might be able to get across there now.
As for riding around the Rose Bowl, I did a ton of laps there. My club used to host 32mi/10lap practice races there Tues and Thurs nights. Sometimes I did 32mi motor pacing sessions there in the early morning (we took turns driving the Vespa for each other). The Pasadena cops were cool about the stop signs we ran right in front of them as they sat drinking their morning coffee.
I believe the side road you referred to at Clear Creek is the Angeles Forest Highway, which connects to Big Tujunga Canyon Road. Little Tujunga is separate, further to the west. All of them are great, as are Mt Baldy and Glendora Mtn Road, which I sometimes did from Pasadena. Descending at speed through the unlit tunnels on the Baldy Road was daunting.
I also did most of those rides ( except SR39, ) but in the 80's. Smog had largely been eliminated by then, but there will always be an inversion layer, often making spectacular early morning cloud cover which you can look down on from the top. I used to often try to ride the Rose Bowl 10 circuit rides with the pro Montrose Bike Club ( now defunct, ) but could only keep up for 6 laps. This was both because I couldn't afford a good bike, and that I was a former smoker ... But, never did Mt. Baldy or Glendora, though I did sometimes ride east from Mt. Wilson to Wrightwood ...
If you have a grad degree from Cal Tech you are a genius
@@jazzfan7491 Sadly no. Most of the geniuses were either professors or undergrads. But great to be around them.
One of my favorite climbs in LA. Good pavement, consistent grade and you can ride most of the descent without touching your brakes
I never was, nor will be a professional cyclist, i still train as hard as I can. This is worst employment ever.
same
get some god tier genetics lol
I'm a heavy, sub average 48 year old Cat 4 cross racer who is training for a cross season that is cancelled. Rode a century yesterday.
The leadout footage of your KOM climb is rad!!!
Only Phil can make 12 minutes of climbing interesting then fast forward 5 seconds of the descent and roll credits!
Nice video. This is a cool route. Here are, I believe all the other routes to mount Wilson. 1. Going through Eaton Canyon. Go to the top of Henninger flats. Then the only path up goes to Mount Wilson. 2. Start at the base of Mount Wilson Park in Sierra Madre. The trail from there will take you all the way up. 3. Take mount Wilson road which you can enter off of Pinecrest Dr in Altadena. This route cuts through Eaton Canyon. 4. Take Chaney Trail which you enter off of Loma Alta Drive in Altadena. Take this trail to Mount Lowe rd. Next take Mt. Lowe rd. To mount Wilson Red Box road. 5. Start at Rising Hill rd in Altadena. This road will lead you to Brown Mountain Truck Trail. Take this to mount Lowe rd. Then take Mount Lowe rd to mount Wilson red box road. 6. Going North up North Arroyo Blvd you can take a path to Brown Mountain truck trail. Then follow the steps previously listed from there. I apologize but there is no name for the trail. 7. You can also get on the 2 by taking North Arroyo Blvd. to ground Mesa trail camp. From there you can take a trail that leads to the 2.
Many of these are definitely mountain bike only - unless you have tubeless tires ...
"It's like an hour climb". 3 hour club here.
I never wanted to visit LA until I started watching these videos.
I live 30 min from LA and even I hate visiting LA but now I want to.
Have a look at Safa Brian youtube channel. Based in LA and the views are insane
Still don't...
Loved this video. I’m an officially retired English guy; which means I don’t get to ride Mt. Wilson anymore! I used to stay in Pasadena 2 or 3 times a month for two nights. Always took my bike and sometimes did the climb on both days. Thanks to being on U.K. time I invariably set off really early in the dark and, as you quite rightly said, it was either too hot or too cold. Once had a Brown Bear walk across the road in front of me. Best time from the Shell station to the top was 1 hr 48 minutes and 23 minutes from Redbox to the top, Not to your amazing level, but as a 55 year-old jet-lagged airline pilot I was very happy. Often scared myself on the descent and always did a lap of the Rose Bowl; because you could. Thanks for the memory, loved it.
Wow, a bear ! I've encountered a red fox, a California Condor, and numerous deer on those climbs. Makes you love it ! Yes, I often did circuits of the Rose Bowl on the way too. I'm a Kiwi and can't ride any more either ... great pity that !
apart from the climb itself, one of the best rewards is to pop into the Cosmic Cafe at the top, have a fresh roast beef sandwich, ice cold coke, some chips, and then head back down into the chaos that is Los Angeles
Mt Rainier is lookin good right now for some Phil Gaimon action.
One of my all-time favorite climbs in So Cal and it was a training staple for me when I was living in the Arcadia/Pasadena area growing up.
Phil calling So Cal "too cold" is the cutest haha
Mt. Wilson does get snow in the winter.
Hwy 2 closes for snow every winter. And there are a number of ski resorts up there. The valley may be comfy and 60-70, but the San Gabriel mountains are still very chilly.
@@evanmacdougall9715 Fair retort. I would hesitate at "very chilly" coming from a ME and VT skier, but it's all in good fun. Enjoy the sunshine!
Andy Gendron
Too cold. Took a friend over to cycle there a few years ago. There was snow actually on the road for the last few hundred feet of the climb. Obviously we carried on to the top and just descended with care. We’d flown from England so we weren’t not going to do it. We also only packed our short legged bib shorts etc. We were in California, why would you need winter gear? 🤔
I grew up in Glendale and knew the owners of the Derby House on Chevy Chase very well and have been in it many times. It is not a Frank Lloyd Wright house; it is credited to his son, Lloyd Wright. Still a cool property.
Thanks for this ! I did this ride daily for 6 months, but had to back off because my knees were screaming at me. And yes, the toughest part of the ride is the straight climb up Angeles Crest Hwy. - killer in summer ! But you can do a really nice circuit up Chevy Chase Canyon, past Descanso Gardens, then down Canada Blvd. into Glendale - a ride I've done countless times, and Chevy Chase is so pretty. ( You can also drop down to the Rose Bowl from there and do a few circuits. ) But Mt. Wilson can also be accessed from a bit further west via Tujunga Canyon - sort of up the back. If you're really determined, you can approach from the east up from San Bernadino, through the beautiful ski village of Wrightwood, and up the mountain. This is a long mountain ride - great for an all day trip ...
"You've got to wave to cyclists." I couldn't agree more.
Love all your videos Phil. Keep them coming. Thanks!
Love the outro music. When did you take up keyboard?
Nice ride. Love the music at the end.
That was a very good video of Mt. Wilson. Thanks for sharing your climb. Btw like the piano playing at the end.
There is another Frank Lloyd Wright in Pasadena hidden in the hills above the RoseBowl.
In Melbourne can only ride 5km from home at the moment, so loving these video's Phil, Thanks :)
The shot from the top with the towers, reminded me of Lookout MOuntain, Golden. Nice KOM Phil!!
I've always preferred Mt. Disappointment as it's closed to traffic and has a more climactic summit, but Wilson is dope too. I always do both when I'm in the area. Great vid Phil :)
I have done that climb. It was upper 70s on the way up, but the last 2 miles was in the clouds with about 40 feet visibility and really cold. Still a great ride.
"occasional buried body" haha!
Glad to hear it's not just me who thinks the window of pleasant weather on Angeles Crest is pretty narrow. Even though I've spent about 3 decades sweating like a pig going up or freezing on the descent, it's still worth it, but not a fair weather route most of the year for sure.
Ha! I rode up that on the first day on the #searchbrigade in 2016... great climb 🤘
Great choice of Mozart :D one of my favourites
Once up Mt. Wilson go right next door and explore the Observatory and have lunch at the Cosmic Cafe. 😊
Several hours north is a wonderful place known an San Juan Batista, and it's one very epic climb.
for LA bike people: that first water fountain at Clear Creek is definitely is not on, so dont plan on it!
You mean the arsenic fountain? LOL
I use this fact to not do Mt Wilson this year yet 😆
@@LaidBackAssassin yeah but the fountain at Red Box is always good. So just fill up at Shell and add electrolytes to stretch it, then pace water to RB. I carry two bottles and finish one at Clear Creek, then finish the second by the time I hit RB to refill.
Ranger station across the road will usually let you fill up a bottle.
One thing I don't miss about southern California is the smog and my lungs burning after exercise.
I wonder what his Carbon Dioxide level is.
Pretty clear now in the days of unleaded gas
In Oct. '18 I was riding up to Wilson and two motorcyclists flew past me doing what must've been about 90-100mph. Their wind nearly blew me off the bike. About a mile up the road, maybe 2 miles before Clear Creek, a police SUV passed me with lights & sirens. As I came around the next corner I saw the police pulled over and just beyond both bikes were laying on their sides against the guard rail...but only one rider was there. As I rode past him he was crying and was in total shock. I checked when I got home that day and it turns out that the other rider had hit the rail and gone over the side of the mountain, and had died.
That's a sad, terrible result for the motorcyclist. Don't wish any harm but can't say I appreciate them buzzing past us cyclists on that climb. Puts everyone at risk .
1:58 after watching Indian Jones 10 bazillion times......my dream home appeared before my very own eyes........choose wisely :)
My three epic mountain climbs in the San Gabriel mountains are Mr. Wilson (5,000 elevation gain), Crystal Lake (6,100 elevation gain), and Mt. Baldy Ski Lifts (6,700 elevation gain). Like Phil said, July and August are brutal hot sizzling months to climb them especially if you are a sweat hog like me. 😅
I've run to the top of it via the trail. Awesome mountain.
Wow how long does that take? You run back down?
When I see cars waiting to pass without yelling or cutting you off I wonder 'what strange wonderful world is this?'.
I edit out the other ones don’t think it’s any different here
Also, it's non-rush hour on a week day.
Just don’t confuse the taller mountain of towers with the other slightly shorter mountain of towers - Mt Lukens. 😄 Angele Crest Hwy is tight in the backyard to where I grew up. I never rode up it, but I have done a few runs up it back in high school x-country. The first two turnouts are also popular make-out spots... My dad did ride up a number of times, tho. He also crashed hard coming back down into town, once. Nice to see my old haunts.
The apple pie up there is epic.
Newcomb's Ranch?
wow wow wow I LOVE the music
Way too much traffic in LA. My nerves would be destroyed before I reached Mt Wilson. Drive up 101 and do Figueroa or go to NorCal. Thx for the videos
So jelous of that weather its not getting over 10 degrees celcius and rain in ADL South Australia cant wait for spring
Love this climb but on the dirt side😁
Never seen the supertuck outside of a race on TV. Looks fast.
From Muhney, no less!
Who is playing the piano? Nice treat. I got lost in it like I was absorbed in eating a cookie!
Please come over to Seattle where everything everywhere is a climb...
How fast were you going on that downhill clip where y'all were getting aero?
I really would love to go biking in LA
Riding in L.A. city sucks, but the mountains are wonderful !
Hey Phil, what one of your books would you recommend first?
Pro cycling on 10 a day first, draft animals second, ask a pro to live in the bathroom
Well, that was the first music extension!
Was the view from the top the intro shot from the Big Lebowski? Sorry for the UK based geographical ignorance.
Phil, how do your brakes do on that long descent? Overheat at all?
No worries. You don't really have to brake much except on tight curves. In fact you can really sprint almost the whole descent and give those quick twitch muscles a good workout ...
Is the mountain named after Brian?
Michael sure rides with straight arms.
Please keep this outro it's beast
Are there any favorite San Francisco Bay are climbs? Or Monterey Bay climbs? I know some good ones around Gilroy
What kind of camera was used to record this video? Action camera? Phone camera? Something else?
The house is actually a Lloyd Wright, Frank Lloyd Wright’s son.
@1:05 true.
That be Mt. Baldy (10,066 ft in elevation) in the distance
You can tell it's Mt. Baldy because they take the trees from one side and comb them over to cover the top.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Phil took the wrong way up to Mt Wilson. Everyone knows that the official way up to Mt Wilson is via Big Tujunga beginning in Sunland. I believe it is among the official "Rules" of bike riding around Los Angeles. #24, in fact, just below #23, which is, Never ride west along PCH through Malibu past 5pm, and ahead of #25, which is, Never travel west along Mulholland at sunup.
Can you explain #23? Is it because there is too much traffic?
With a bottle and tool pouch - gangsta
hahaha at those height no cell coverage!
Signal is too strong off the towers. Just drops straight down to city really.
He's riding with the Wayfarer's on.
I can't believe those guys didn't lead you out for the first bit of the climb...
Maybe I'm old fashioned but wouldn't be nice to show Garmin data on screen in your video? Slope, altitude, power, etc..
You mean Wahoo data? ;)
Since he cuts so much in these videos it would be to complicated to match it up.
I do that when we can film the whole effort, but that’s tough in the Covid whatnot
Ben: "are you an LA cyclist if you have not ridden around Rose Bowl" can be applied to every local...... Let's hear them.
Are you even a Chicago cyclist if you haven’t ridden the full lakefront path both directions in a ride?
@@drew3864 Are you even an Atlanta cyclist if you haven't ridden 19392093209 laps around Stone Mountain?
Are you even an East side of Cleveland cyclist if you have not ridden an "Old Mill Double"
Thanks for appreciating Frank Lloyd Wright, I’m an architect, so I certainly
do!
lol that clip
your mate held the wheel for a good length of time
He’d have been fine all the way if I paced it better 😂
Is that Mozart? Sounds Mozarty.
I can smell the baked earth just watching the video. I miss it.

@@adamgosztolai1502 Thank you!

Mozart in the Hills
Pretty sure the phone doesn’t work up there because you’re getting so microwaved from all the towers, lol
Peace ... plants?
#LAsucksforcyling
It was that moment when Gabs new he was blocked.
Incredibly dangerous
Hey Phil - how do you go with wannabe race car drivers on the roads in the hills around LA? I watch a lot of The Smoking Tyre vids where they take fast cars on those canyon roads and it’s scary to watch when you think about what would happen if there was a cyclist around the blind corners they hit at massive speed....
Best bet is a daytime visible tail light. I use a 150 lumen light with a 9 hour run time (Cygolite Hotshot Pro 150) and also a small adjustable bar end mirror from CatEye (BM-45). With those combined I generally feel very safe. I can see what's coming up behind me and they can most definitely see me. But yeah, the blind corners on the descent from Wilson can get scary. About a year ago I remember Phil posting something about a near miss there.
@@nickv.7181 The speed those guys take blind corners there is no way they're stopping in time, regardless of how visible you are... I always ride with the brightest rear light i can, even in summer. You can "disappear" when you're in shadows under trees and the driver is in the sun with shades on.
Australia is a really dangerous place to ride, the anti cyclist road culture is really bad :( The US doesn't look much better.
@@froggy0162 yeah it's really not bad here. But either way if you love doing it, you have to just go for it and take every reasonable precaution. The only alternative is to live a mostly joyless "life".
Sorry, cant see the ocean.
Can we make Ben a permanent addition?
No one riding with gloves. I just don't get it.
Why would u use gloves ?
I wear gloves riding my fat bike in the snow. When it is warm though?...never.
Having gone down a few (a bunch?) of times, I agree; also get better grip. Go hand-commando occasionally to tan up.
The old racers around here tend to skip glove use - vanity or confidence, I'm not sure.
please no ads 2 minutes into video, kills the flow.
I'm only seeing one mustache not impressed
I thought that Muhney would at least have a mustache.
Ebikes might be the underestimated teammate of the year that kills off all the pretentious, useless, infamous pricks. +No, you are allowed to be focused, having a safe ride, and ignore other cyclists. Especially with all the 30something people racing on ebikes and no helmets. Just be happy the person is on a bike, not in a car, and skip the insisting that all cyclists say "hi" to you. Now to not say hi to Lachlan Morten, that would be a tragic missed opportunity. Anyone else, meh
