Traditional fingerstyle guitar is particular to its time and place, drawing heavily upon local cuture, but allowing for personal expression and innovation. Each of the artists presented here is a master of fingerstyle guitar, whether two- or three-finger picking. With rare exceptions, most were born around the turn of the century, or in its early years.

When I was in my 30’s I worked for the county doing home aide services. They sent me to Libba’s house. That’s what she was called. Her nickname. She was in her 80’s. I spent quite a while listening to her story of how she got into playing guitar and singing. Now stepping back in my life when I was a child I used to sing Freight Train in my back yard. Now because I was shy I didn’t tell her about that time. She was a sweet, lovely lady and I was blessed to meet her.

I’m not sure about it all. When and how she started. She used to be a nanny and perhaps she thought she could influence the children. Now I’m going back to 1983 or so. I’m almost 80 myself so please forgive me if I don’t remember it all. There are many videos of her singing perhaps she told her history in them.

    😲😍♥️… "Priceless"… Unique…
My favourite piece for acoustic guitar. I learned It from the fantastic versión of R. Mason & S. Waring, that they called "Carolina R+R" ..

It's just ridiculous how easy she makes it look. One of the absolute best to ever play the instrument.

Thank you lovely lady for such a great song. First song I learned to finger pick in the 60's I'm now 70 years old. Still playing and singing it!

There is such an incredible sweetness in all aspects of this song, the guitar part, the lyrics, even in Elizabeth Cotten's voice. I've heard she wrote this when she was 11 and that adds even more sweetness to the song. I can picture the imagination of an 11 year old, fascinated with train travel, escaping her surroundings and going on an adventure. I've heard covers of this where the singer has better intonation and too often they add flourishes which, for me, land on my ear as profane, compared to the beautiful simplicity with which Elizabeth sings the song. It's one of those songs whose melody and lyrics are so hauntingly beautiful that you don't want it to end.

The essence of Carolina flows from her fingers right through the heart: the wind over the Blue Ridge Mountains, the waters of the French Broad River...her voice breathes the old but always powerful nature...
Why a biopic about this great woman hasn't been made yet is something I really can't understand

I’m learning this song to play as a surprise at my grandmother’s funeral. My grandmother is from North Carolina, where Elizabeth Cotten is from.

She is playing a standard right hand guitar… upside down.. it’s all how you learn it… anything is possible.

I used to play music with a left handed player that was on a right hand guitar. I ask once why he did that. He if he was out somewhere and ran across a guitar you never found a left hand guitar so I order for him to play he learned to turn it upside down and play

@@henrydunn9420 HI Henry, I saw a man playing upside down once at Elderly Instruments. I asked why. He said does it bother you and proceeded to turn the guitar the other way and play it right-handed. Frog was quite a picker!

I’m quite sure the other person is Laura Weber. She had guitar-related shows on NET in the late 60s.

I'm gobsmacked. I have literally clicked over from a Tommy Emmanuel "lesson" on how to play Freight Train and voila! That said ... as a "lefty" to see Miss Libba (* @samlupo100) is also, but plays "upside down" makes this even more sublime.
