  • Jim Ratcliffe has a difficult past when it comes to owning clubs, full of mistakes of his own admission. He has the resources and the ambition to help bring Manchester United back to its full glory, but what mistakes has he made in the past, and has he learned from them?

    I will say as a Utd fan that I'm encouraged that we're seeing the likes of Berrada, Wilcox and Ashworth coming into the club in those top positions. Effectively INEOS are bringing in best-in-class, Man City pedigree for both Berrada and Wilcox and Ashworth's involvement in the England DNA project that we, that is England as a international football nation, have reaped huge benefits from. If Ratcliffe was appointing his mates or family into the top jobs, then we would be looking at repeating the same mistakes.

Only Ashworth is doing the same role and by all accounts he wasn't actually responsible for any of Newcastle's good signings.

    I'm surprised Brailsford would do something so stupid at Nice as delaying the transfer work He may be from a different sport, but knowing how his team has conducted itself during transfer seasons in cycling, surely he'd be aware of how important it is to be ahead of things.
    For some context on the cycling team: I believe Ratcliffe has taken a hands-off approach, and letting Brailsford take care of things, which he had done brilliantly before Ineos took over. Ineos as a team has been marred by bad luck, with Froome's crash in 2019, Bernal's injury in 2020 and Bernal's 2022 training crash which nearly earned him a Darwin Award (he's thankfully alive and back to racing). They've also had to deal with being financially outmuscled by UAE Team Emirates, while Visma-Lease a Bike (previously Jumbo-Visma) got ahead of the Ineos team on sports science and scouting. Brailsford became director of sports for the Ineos organization in December 2021, after the transfer window for the 2022 cycling season was settled. After that, the team has gone into the transitional period, and been banking heavily on youth, signing two U19's into the WT squad going into both the 2023 and 2024 season.

      The Ineos Grenadiers transfer policy has been a disaster in the past couple of years, especially after Brailsford gave the rains to Ellingworth (who has now been sacked).
      Some examples are:
      Failing to agree a deal with Rodriguez then having to pay Movistar compensation when Brailsford or Ellingworth (or both) realized their mistake.
      Agreeing to sign Foss on a million per year contract (a massive deal compared to his quality) then doing a 180 and eventually resolving everything behind closed doors.
      Signing Porte after his podium at the tour, probably on a huge deal, only for him to retire not having achieved anything during his contract.
      Not resigning A. Yates at the end of the 2022 season. Yates had a career year and podiumed the tour in 2023.
      Also many of their young signings are stagnating or even regressing.

    • @michaelfarrow5817
      @michaelfarrow5817 Před 3 dny

      Brailsford's idea behind everything is throw money at the problem in a controlled way and be strict to the point of bullying with the competitors. Britain's track cyclists were essentially pros when others were semi-pros due to Olympic funding. Other teams were getting performance clothing and bikes the week of the competition, whilst GB were getting everything weeks in advance to get ready for competitions.
      He took that model to team road cycling and did well in the Grand Tours but has never been able to crack the classics. Now other teams have caught up and are doing the Brailsford model better than he has. Also, his reputation has to be sullied by all the issues over TUEs, jiffy bags and whether he was doping his riders.
      IMO, he has no actual knowledge or flair, it's just plug and play the "British Cycling model", which only worked in track cycling because the other teams don't have the money. How is that going to work in football?

    Us fans had no winning option. Either Ratcliffe and his egregious environmental damages and human rights abuse in impoverished countries. Or some random Shiekh which nobody knows if they are even real or not who also has a rich history of humans right abuse. Literally, it's like picking who is the worst dictator from WW2. Yeah you can argue for one or another, but ultimately they all suck and no option is good. I was doing my research during the club sale and RATcliffe is the sort of dude I absolutely despise. Buys up clubs (not just football), turns them to shit, then buys the next shiny toy when it gets a bit tough, thus neglecting the previous pet project and moving onto the next. This is all funded off the back of exceptionally damaging practices to the environment and making people stuck in a poverty cycle have to endure even worse conditions just so he can line his pockets. The only thing he can do for my club which will make me say "ok, fair enough" is if he brings in Toto Wolff from the Mercedes F1 team. Toto is an absolute genius when it comes to building a team. He himself isnt particularly special, but he has a god-like ability to get all the right sort of people in specific places and gives them the freedom to operate as they see fit, which all combines into a really great team. Mercedes are suffering a bit lately, but you can see how having some of those people Toto, Lauda and Brawn put in place leaving has impacted them.
    Long comment to basically say RATcliffe sucks. Cant believe my options as a fan are; Glazers, Random Sheikh, or RATcliffe. May as well as me if I want to be stabbed, shot or run over by a car.

      @@Icarus07c He was highly involved in the signing of Tonali yes, whereas the likes of Bruno G and Trippier arrived before Ashworth did (even if Sky seems to believe otherwise). But the main issue from Newcastle’s side isn’t necessarily who he’s been involved in signing. The recruitment team at Newcastle (and Brighton for that matter) consists of more than one person, so it’s not the case that every player signed while Ashworth was at said club, where his discoveries. And each club will survive without him.
      The main issue for Newcastle’s sake now though, is that he has knowledge on a lot of sensitive information about the club’s recruitment strategies, contract information on key assets, players to be scouted etc - at the same time that Man Utd is a direct rival in the league. I am not saying that he would disclose such information, but the hypothetical possibility that it could happen, would still put Newcastle in a vulnerable position. That is why Newcastle are demanding such a high sum for him to be released from his gardening leave - and why it makes sense for Newcastle to pay his wages until then, so that he can’t work for Man Utd.
      As for the time when he left Brighton, the case was different: 1), They’re not direct rivals, and 2) Newcastke was able to agree a compensation with the south coast club so that his gardening leave would end.

    Something is off only between Zealand and Manchester United particulary, the talk about Coventry's offside for example he made a full video about it like VAR didn't mess up a milion times already with a catching name "ThE gAmE iS rUiNeD", I don't think it's much about Coventry's Cinderella-dream-run, I think he just doesn't like Manchester United that much to put it mildly, therefore he doesn't like the new owner. Jim Ratcliffe is doing a good job for now, putting right people in right places and trying to rebuild a crumbling Old Trafford, which is enough for me.
    But this personal animosity is not doing him any good, videos like this really give him a big minus in my book.
    For example, Laussane being a feeder club to Nice, I didn't hear him talk about Troyes in France or Girona in Spain being feeder clubs to Manchester City, and numerous other things that are in form of "maybe", "could be", "we have to see" and all other bullshit that a 5 year old can say and predict.

      @thargoff Před 15 dny +13

      He did a video on Girona and it being part of the City group, if I remember correctly.
      United did a lot to receive justified criticism.
      And the Coventry video was clearly about VAR and not MU at all.
      Also, this video is about the Ratcliffe's life before MU to give some insight into that, no MU criticism.
      It is also much too early to judge Ineos involvement (in either direction). And Ineos is also not an innocent company, to say the least.
      It is your own bias.

    • @ahmedhamzic9065
      @ahmedhamzic9065 Před 15 dny +2

      @@thargoff Read again what I wrote, he could've called Laussane and Nice part of INEOS group, not a feeder club.
      United is the club that has been wronged the most out of all clubs in PL this season, from the moment that Kloppy boi started crying that all decisions went United's way from then on referee's and VAR are just destroying United back and forth, so justified criticism ? I wouldn't say so.
      VAR has been around for quite some time and has been making terrible mistakes ever since but he chose to do it right after one important decision against Cinderella underdog club went United's way? Why did he wait to make the video?
      As I said, Ratcliff is putting right people in right places and does his work on rebuilding a crumbling Old Trafford, you talk about his past in football, you are head of a multi billion dollar company, would you give all that up to go manage a small team in Switzerland hands on when you have much more important things to do? I wouldn't say so.
      Point is, that you missed the point of the comment, where is his video about mistakes in Nice and Laussane without Manchester United? He doesn't care, and damn right he shouldn't, he has better things to do, but when certain things reach United he becomes interested and searches for flaws and mistakes, ignoring good things. Guy obviously has a bias against United, same as you probably a scouser or Arsenal fan.

      Nope, Berrada had nothing to do with the faulty finances of the club or the 115 charges against it. He oversaw talent management and performance, before that he secured commercial deals for City but he wasn't on the back end, falsifying the books. Wilcox joined Southampton in 2023, hardly enough time to make decisions damaging enough to get them relegated. Their relegation is on the owners. And Ashworth saw an opportunity to join the biggest club in England and bring it back to where it belongs, wouldn't call that being a mercenary. He has upgraded from every club he has left.
