BLTouch vs. 3DTouch - Should you save some money and buy the clone?

  • For 3D Printers, the BLTouch is the gold standard bed sensor. The knockoffs coming from China are looking so close to the original I though I would test one of them out. Can the original really be worth four times as much money?
To everyone who says I didn't connect the wires correctly: I did. I hacked on this sensor and got it working, but I'm not about to show you guys how to spend a couple of hours of your life to get a stolen design working. Support original creators. Buy genuine.

I bought a 3D Touch and couldn't get it to work out of the box - exactly the same behaviour as shown in the video here. Flashing red light (error mode), but if issued with a reset command, appeared to 'sense' correctly. This made me think that the issue was likely to be with the servo. I checked the contact points on the board where the two wires from the coil connect, with a multimeter and confimed the continuity of the coil, but was only able to get very intermittent connection with the multimeter. A quick 'dab' with my soldering iron to reflow the coil connection points on the board (very quick - as the coil wires are very thin and will burn out quickly if heat is applied for too long) and the servo is now working perfectly.
I don't usually leave comments, but I hope this helps someone out. I'm guessing that this was exactly the same issue as the one shown in the video here - it's just I was going for a "can I diagnose an fix it" mentality, rather than "can I destroy it" as seen here!

I have now tested it at 3.3v. I scratched the little trace on the PCB to change it to 3.3v logic and it does the exact same behavior. The colors on the wiring loom match the BLTouch. Don't get me wrong, I know how to get this probe working. But to really get it to 100% functionality would require flashing the actual BLTouch firmware onto the probe. Which would require me to rewrite that code (I doubt AntClabs is sharing their source code, and I don't blame them). I'm not about to help some thieves in China sell knockoffs by teaching people how to get their broken product to work. Even I did, it's not worth your time to fight with the inferior product trying to get it to work. 3D printing has enough issues. Why give yourself more issues to deal with? Politics and morals aside, I ended up learning a bunch when the clone Duet boards I ordered once didn't have ANY jumpers pre-installed. I went through several authentic and clone BLTouch sensors (and other Z-axis sensors) but what I discovered was that there are voltage setting differences in the PCBs and with the Duet boards (not sure about other boards). Without any jumpers installed neither authentic or clone would work. With the proper voltage jumpers set, both worked just fine and in an identical fashion. What's sad is that even the BLTouch documentation is so piss poor that it barely assisted the troubleshooting process. Even the OEM of the BLTouch could stand to improve their product and documentation, especially if they are charging a premium. The whole 3D printing phenomenon is built on top of expired patents. There is a very good reason for patents to have an expiration date. -- knowledge sharing makes the whole society much more productive.
But we want to reward innovators as well, so we give them copyrights.
If you think making a cheap clone product off some non-copyrighted item is immoral, I want to argue:
    A. Discover a cheaper method to manufacture itself, it's a type of innovation.
    B. To make a product non-necessarily expensive, should be equally immoral.
Here is the reality: the Chinese didn't really innovate, they just have a lower-cost production environment - the currency, the policy, the labor, etc. But they didn't do anything immoral.
Antclabs is not immoral as well, the western production is just costly.
Oh, I got it, this called: CAPITALISM!
This has nothing to do with morals.
As a Chinese myself, I moved to the US 12 years ago. I know how it feels to be poor. Capitalism left millions of people out of poverty, this included putting 3D printers into people's hands who only make $300 USD a month. --I thank capitalism for that.
And some of them have a $15 3D touch instead of a $40 BL touch. I don't think this is immoral.
The world is bigger than the US and China, there is Africa, the middle east, south America and more, there're a lot more people who need affordable products than we realize.
So, please, stop spreading hatred - if there's no tribalism and the trade war, Antclabs probably can find a cheap manufacturer somewhere in Asia, and make it BL touch $17 with good quality control.
See what I'm saying? In this whole thing, there is nothing to do with morals.
You can feel free to trash on any silly products, in fact, I encourage you to do that, this can help manufacturers to make better products, but Please stop spreading hatred.
I hope you can keep the good work, I really enjoy watching most of your videos, maybe my comment can change the way you look at the whole situation a bit - toward the good direction. Cheers.

However, if it wasn't for cloning designs the 3D printer market would look very different price-wise. I am actually surprised that it's taken so long for a mass-market release of a sensor the employs an optical sensor (in the CR Touch) using the same electromagnetic deployment as the BLTouch.

@@DesignPrototypeTest I'm just a guy who enjoys 3D printing and do a lot of my own testing. On this video I found BLtouch to be faulty with poor support. Unfortunately the 3D touch I had was worse. Neither was a plug in and run and neither I would buy again.
The actual problem with the BLTouch I have is the pin sticks and the temporary fix I figured out was when it faults (often at powerup it fails to pass its self test) I have to manually pull the pin down then select the macro to reset BLTouch alarms. The BLTouch will then work for some amount of time then fail to deploy again. If I repeat home Z after 5+ homes it will fail again.
Note as a by the by you tested the sensor holding it horizontal and not vertical. The sensor including the BLTouch is more apt to fail in any position other than perfectly upright to reduce drag on the pin.
Hardware fails and the true test of a manufacturer is how their support works. BLTouch simply re-directs and blames something else in my experience.
The positive side to Asian manufactured product is people expect it to be throw away and get little to no support. The reason for buying more expensive non Asian is for the support. Often it is not there and it is just more expensive. The funny part is non Asian is often still manufactured in Asia.
I watch videos in 2 different perspectives:
1 - for my information where I can extract bias and get the info I am looking for on a product.
2 - for the growth and expansion of the 3D printing community - newbies joining us.
      For the newbies joining:
You likely seen my negative comments on video's that are very negative. I noticed of late that evaluaters on 3D print products wandered down the path to slam products. Videos are created for the reason of telling people this is junk. Slamming products and being negative in no way helps growing the 3D printing community. The reason for this is the odd thing you say positive three other evaluaters will comment negatively on. New people get very confused and do not join us in the community. I have heard people over and over give up on 3D printing because there is no way for them to make up their mind on a product to buy or move to commercial products since help videos basically call everything junk.
I think in part this is due to bias in the evaluation and feeling the need to point out faults. This bias should not be there but of course its hard not to show it. For example I would believe you are for Delta, non Asian products and intellectual property bias, these products you praise and focus on their benefits. All others your primary focus is on the faults.
On this video I would think you created it with a mindset (I will push this thought to the extreme to make a point) of telling people the 3DTouch is Chinese garbage. How different would the video have been if the mindset was to compare touch sensors? The same point is given but the concept is positive not negative.
People are not dumb and can draw their own conclusions, they want to that is why they are watching!
Example and just points I dreamed up they don't actually reflect my view.
      BLTouch benifits
Repeat accuracy of 0.05 mm - higher print starts (words??? lol)
      Reliability
      Long term life
      Stylish
      Replacement pin available
      Support
      3DTouch benifits
      Repeat accuracy of 0.2 mm
      Inexpensive
You get the point, positive words listing non bias benefits not just benefits to point out the faults of the other products. Build a video around that basic thought and not based on proving its junk.
From the above people can draw a conclusion that 3DTouch does not offer repeat accuracy and Support and make up their own mind on a product. It also shows that first layer could be prone to failing more often with the lower accuracy without actually saying it.
Many people do not want to be "told" what to think and want to think for themselves. Every person watching has their own unique situation different from yours. Your fault conclusions may not apply to their situation. If you had a benefits conclusion they then can apply that to their situation.
One of my observations about people over time has been that people learn the hard way no matter what we say is the saying. That is not exactly true and it is influenced on exactly what we say. If we tell people what to do (the negative thoughts path) they often do the opposite and "learn the hard way". If we discuss benefits positivly they often will not choose the path that we personally know they should not choose.
Negative sales studies showed that if you tell people what is wrong with other manufacturers products that people more often than not will buy that other product.

But then in the FAQ, it says:
"6. Do you have any patents?
We have several patents and some are on patent pending.
And we have already completed the patent application for this project."
It seems to me that they implied it would be open source, but then have applied for patents.

  • @LMF5000
    @LMF5000 Před 4 lety +31

The problem is that the original BLtouch is hideously overpriced. I mean, $40 is a lot to pay for a magnet, a coil and a PCB when a whole 3D printer costs just $230. Someone saw the opportunity to charge half the price and they did, and now they're raking in all the budget-conscious consumers. That's capitalism for you.
Also, your comment about the screw being worse because it adds weight is laughable. A screw adds a fraction of a gram. No 3D printer will feel the difference when it's hauling around a hotend weighing hundreds of grams. If anything it's better because screws can be taken apart and re-assembled, whereas the only way to disassemble the original bltouch is to irreversibly break that plastic tab, or try to melt and bend it, then melt and bend it back.

I actually have a custom anycubic i3 and a voron 2.1. that’s how i found your videos looking for someone who was doing new things. but you feed into the drama i’m not telling you to stop being yourself. but it’s seems like you are always trying to prove everyone wrong. i loved it when you were showing us how to add new stuff to our printer not this clone copy stealing this crap your on now. you didn’t need to make a video about how crappy a clone is we know it’s probably never gonna be as good as the real deal but when your a student with little money sometime you have to cut corners just to afford a printer and the problems with the clones a lot of the time make it so you can learn how to make stuff work buy fixing it and problem solving i just hate that almost every video from you is your trying to make people be like you and not buy clones. it’s not your fight and it’s never gonna stop screw that war and just start showing us how to add the new not always sponsored tech that you were finding you always found the coolest stuff and showed us how to make our cheap crappy clones better i want that Design Prototype Test channel back not this super oh don’t buy this or your a bad person crap as of late sorry if i came off as a prusa fan boy. i do like prusa tho ain’t gonna lie but i like your content in that same way just miss the old videos

    ?

if it's cheaper what do you do? ............

Shall I start by being honest? okay then:
I also bought 2 fake Touch, they are still lie on the shelf.
I have not tried them yet because I am afraid of breaking the good software from my 3D printer.
I will test it sometimes with a fake arduino and a fake ramps (am I bad now?)

I bought a genuine BLtouch and it was a NIGHTMARE to get working on an ender 3. I literally had to break off a transistor on the mainboard for it to work! and mind you this was actually the Ender 3 kit made specifically for the ender 3, yet it requires you to break the mainboard to make it work.
I'm all for genuine and copy rights, but this video is engineered to make the knockoff look bad, since the 3Dtouch and BLtouch require different settings in addition to ignoring the correct cables provided in the box to make it seem like its bad. I hope this was unintentional.

I've had my legitimate BLTouch do the same - servo just stops working and it just flashes on power up. I tried ordering a new pin thinking maybe something happened to magnet part, and the seller sent me some pin that wouldn't even fit in the BLTouch (I did get a refund, it was an authorized reseller, not a random Aliexpress seller). Unfortunately Antclabs told me they don't sell just the pin. I ended up ordering a 2nd BLtouch complete unit - after auto Delta calibration kept failing I tried doing multiple G30 S-1 without moving the effector and got different results everytime. For me, on a Tevo Little Monster, these things just don't seem to work. I just do manual probing/jogging with paper now.

Oh yeah. For duet board you must cut track on 3d touch pcb to work on 3.3V. Older bltouch have the same thing. Most likely you broke sensor or it never see proper voltage on pwm signal because it may have higher voltage threshold with Schmitt input.

Maybe I can be of some use. As I was all over the interference problem when it was not being talked about. Interference and repeatability was a massive problem with these probes. I don't know if it finally got addressed because im not using them anymore. But the only place you would really hear about it was github. Meanwhile people acted like they were just fine. Because of youtubers I suspect. It becomes a big problem when trying to perfect your high temp prints. I think it was overlooked because of how many people print in PLA. But I suspect what you were having was to do with that. Let me tell you how bad I hated the early version and smart version of BLtouch. Those were broken and shielding the wires did nothing. Blame the design on this one buddy. I bet the clone was a copy of the early revisions and this has finally been addressed.

Look to the number of negative comments on amazon, where original BLTouch is not working. 20%, that is 1 out of 5 original ones are not working. A LOT of people on FB complain about the original ones. I guess the number of working vs non-working original/clones is about the same, and normally I won't take a risk of spending 40$ on non-working original, rather than 13$ on non-working clone. Sample size of 1 original vs 1 clone is far from being representative to do such radical conclusions. Thousands of people are happy with the clones. I am not advocating to support clones, I just do not understand how come original have such a bad QC and high failure rate when doing stats properly? Besides that, many clones have different connection and setup and you need to spend a little bit of time figuring how to configure it properly.
