- Easy Way to Catch Minnows! Free! Best Way? Fast! Minnow Trapping! - How to Use Umbrella Net
I went down to the River to get some Minnows after noticing how many minnows were just off of the current. This is almost fishing in a way, and is quite fun. I know my little boy would love to do this with me as you watch the minnows go into the net and you simply catch them, and do it really fast. Once you get the technique, and how the minnows react down it becomes very easy, and if you are trying to save money and go fishing with live bait. Then, this is probably the fastest way to catch minnows. I go into how to use an umbrella net, and this is a good video on learning how to catch minnows with a net. I wish I would of know this method along time ago because then I would of learned the best way to catch crappie minnows which is what I used to do all the time, and I spent tons of money buying dozens of minnows at the store. Let me know if this is how you like to catch minnows rather than using a minnow trap, or minnow seine net.

The fastest and easiest way for me is to make some chum using instant oats, hotdogs, garlic powder, salt, sugar, melted butter and mix with water till it begins to come together. Take what you need and put the rest in the freezer. Toss out some chum in a minnow spot. Let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes and drop a 1/4” mesh castnet on them. You’ll have bait (minnows, chubs and shiners) in less than 5 minutes. Do it all the time when I fish streams and rivers. Works especially great in mid spring through mid autumn when the bait is in shallow water.
That is quite the recipe Greg. I bet that works really good though. I could definitely see you catching a ton of minnows doing that.
Mine is 'sneak attack' lol!
great vid and thanks for not editing out some of the learnings, ect. I always appreciate a honest real world "how to"
Your welcome bud. Gotta show all of it to understand the how to side of it. Thanks
Man you come up with some wild stuff love it
Ha, thats an amazing compliment. Thanks danny
I loved it man
Thanks vincent
An easy way to get your bread to sink and stay in the net without a screen is to: 1. Place the net in the water in the location you wish. 2. Take a hand full of bread and soak it in water, squeeze it out and shape it into small balls. Now from the shore toss the bread ball to the net, they will now sink directly to the bottom of the net. Don't worry if you miss a few tosses as it will just chum up more bait that will find its way to the net. 3. When you pull the net in, you will still have some bread remaining. Just squeeze out again and start with step one again. Note, I never use a screen to hold bread as it tends to rip the net after a while. I have had the same umbrella net for 20 years. Just rinse out immediately after use and do not store in sun, as it will deteriorate the net over time.
Thats a good way of doing it. Im gonna try that. Thanks bud I appreciate it
this is awesome👏
Thanks bud
That's so cute!!!
Ha, thanks danuelle
Looks like fun, use to catch crawfish with that type of net.
I used to always use a seine net, but you always get wet and it can be hard work. These umbrella nets make it so easy. I would love to catch crawfish with that net.
Thank you 👍
Your welcome bud!
I like your video
Hey, thanks Desiree. I appreciate it.
Nice 👍
Thanks bud!
Let me know if you catch minnows with these umbrella nets or what you use to catch them with.
If you place net under a school you can pick up lbs at a time. I used to net weekly on lake Erie with one of those nets it worked overly well if you could see minnows. Throw past get whole school.
not bad if you have the time. cast netting shad is the best way to get bait you can get tons of it fast sometimes but ya. dip netting in certain areas can be big pay day also. i think i might do some traps to help get some fresh bait for trotlines sometimes but then i can just set and retrieve later and not have to use as much time so i can do other stuff commercial fishing wise. i notice though catfish love shad though especiall yif its fresh.. they have so much oil and slime i think tahts why. later man. nice vid.
Yep you make so many good points. I love hearing your experiences. Thanks bud
Love the bread idea. Don’t use a rock. Find fishing weights and tie them to each corner of the umbrella net. you will catch alot more per pull without the rock lol
Ha yeah that’s a great idea. I need to do that and I would probably catch a lot more. Thanks bud
What kind of extension pole is that ? I need one of those !
Surprisingly, i got that pole from walmart in the painting section. It was $10 and very well worth it.
Shur-line, easy reach, extension pole $18 at Walmart
That's a cool thing I live in Canada where would you go to get that over here
Any shallow creek or river just off of the current should hold the minnows and should draw them in with some bait like bread in the middle.
Maybe start with an actual net with like a basket part and no handle instead of just a flat screen and then pull it up slowly
Yes!
Do you have to use that pole or can you use a fishing rod
I would use the rod that net can get heavy
Gees minnow trap or going to the bait shop 😂
Yes!
Where did he get the pole from I found the net but it doesn't come with a pole
I got the extendable pole from
Walmart in the paint section
I would try dog kibble tied up the same way as the bread I always have good luck..
I have got to try that, I've heard it works good but never tried it. Thanks ryan!
Also get some pantyhose to hold the dog food
Let me know if you want to fish some time, I will be living down there in a couple months.
That's awesome bud, lots of good fishing down here.
Oh yeah I am tracking, I was born and raised in Texas before we moved to Siloam. I grew up in East Texas, so I got some great spots. I will take you to some if you want. I also do a lot of red fishing off my kayak.
Siloam? What year did you graduate?
2000, lol you dont remember Hooper?
You don't want to tell us where you got that umbrella net from ?
I actually got it on amazon
yo i have a big creek next to my house i have caught 9 minnows in the ast two days
At least you caught some, what are you using to catch them
I always found that a cheap bag of cat food and my Castnet catch all the beta everyone
I could see that catching them Paul!
I used a cheap bag of cat food for years as long as it floated give it about 10 minutes the cast net you got it full of shiners or green backs water at work where are used it
Looks like a definite easy way to catch minnows but of a sucky way trying to empty it lose more than you catch
Ha, yep your probably right.
Minnow trap over that any day !
Ha, yeah whatever your comfortable
With. If I had help I would take a seine net.
Bad idea/design for a minnow trap, been using my gee's g-40 for years without fail
Yep those are some good traps mike
Get 5 times that number with one pass of a seine without bread.
Yep, I’m trying new and different techniques.
Pull it up slow
Bunch took off because you used a rock for weight you don’t need the rock
Yep. That always spooks them. I used to throw rock to get them into net
Cast net works better
Yeah your probably right
Lol So you want to see if you can't catch some minnows and then see if you can't catch some fish what a waste of time lol just joking I'm about to order one of these today tired of paying $6 a dozen for minnows...
Ha. I’m with ya. You go fishing enough those minnows really start to get expensive. Go catch a bunch and make your own live bait station.
