  • Easy Way to Catch Minnows! Free! Best Way? Fast! Minnow Trapping! - How to Use Umbrella Net
I went down to the River to get some Minnows after noticing how many minnows were just off of the current. This is almost fishing in a way, and is quite fun. I know my little boy would love to do this with me as you watch the minnows go into the net and you simply catch them, and do it really fast. Once you get the technique, and how the minnows react down it becomes very easy, and if you are trying to save money and go fishing with live bait. Then, this is probably the fastest way to catch minnows. I go into how to use an umbrella net, and this is a good video on learning how to catch minnows with a net. I wish I would of know this method along time ago because then I would of learned the best way to catch crappie minnows which is what I used to do all the time, and I spent tons of money buying dozens of minnows at the store. Let me know if this is how you like to catch minnows rather than using a minnow trap, or minnow seine net.

The fastest and easiest way for me is to make some chum using instant oats, hotdogs, garlic powder, salt, sugar, melted butter and mix with water till it begins to come together. Take what you need and put the rest in the freezer. Toss out some chum in a minnow spot. Let it sit for 2 to 3 minutes and drop a 1/4” mesh castnet on them. You’ll have bait (minnows, chubs and shiners) in less than 5 minutes. Do it all the time when I fish streams and rivers. Works especially great in mid spring through mid autumn when the bait is in shallow water.

That is quite the recipe Greg. I bet that works really good though. I could definitely see you catching a ton of minnows doing that.

An easy way to get your bread to sink and stay in the net without a screen is to: 1. Place the net in the water in the location you wish. 2. Take a hand full of bread and soak it in water, squeeze it out and shape it into small balls. Now from the shore toss the bread ball to the net, they will now sink directly to the bottom of the net. Don't worry if you miss a few tosses as it will just chum up more bait that will find its way to the net. 3. When you pull the net in, you will still have some bread remaining. Just squeeze out again and start with step one again. Note, I never use a screen to hold bread as it tends to rip the net after a while. I have had the same umbrella net for 20 years. Just rinse out immediately after use and do not store in sun, as it will deteriorate the net over time.

I used to always use a seine net, but you always get wet and it can be hard work. These umbrella nets make it so easy. I would love to catch crawfish with that net.

If you place net under a school you can pick up lbs at a time. I used to net weekly on lake Erie with one of those nets it worked overly well if you could see minnows. Throw past get whole school.

not bad if you have the time. cast netting shad is the best way to get bait you can get tons of it fast sometimes but ya. dip netting in certain areas can be big pay day also. i think i might do some traps to help get some fresh bait for trotlines sometimes but then i can just set and retrieve later and not have to use as much time so i can do other stuff commercial fishing wise. i notice though catfish love shad though especiall yif its fresh.. they have so much oil and slime i think tahts why. later man. nice vid.

Love the bread idea. Don’t use a rock. Find fishing weights and tie them to each corner of the umbrella net. you will catch alot more per pull without the rock lol

Any shallow creek or river just off of the current should hold the minnows and should draw them in with some bait like bread in the middle.

  • @KeikoBushnell

Maybe start with an actual net with like a basket part and no handle instead of just a flat screen and then pull it up slowly
