Sports other than football are very popular in Serbia. As for tipping, I just hate it. When in USA some tourists refused to pay it. Not sure whether they knew that tipping is part of waitresses wages. Your criticisms are very constructive. And I love that walkway, beautiful.

Have you ever been on a London tube? I use it daily for over 20 years and it’s a very rare exception that someone gives up their seat even if they are seating in the priority seat. This is the sign of times rather than a Serbia thing. In terms of taxis coming from the airport, you can buy a voucher at the airport with s fixed price which is quite cheap. Some taxis do not take the voucher but most do. The toiletries are not only much more expensive but lesser quality. The Western companies selling these products have lesser quality stock which gets sold in Eastern European countries. The government does bit care if you can survive on your wage ( if you are lucky to have a job). There is no welfare and you are left to your own devices. That’s why most people live and extended families and help each other out

@@msy7906 there are more Serbs living abroad than living in Serbia. Most families have someone sending them money from abroad. Outside Belgrade most people own land and have some income from agriculture mainly growing raspberries or subletting land to those who want to plant raspberries. Also people are entrepreneurial. Most have some side hustles and make extra money from somewhere. During the wars some people had no income for 6 + months and had to survive a month on 50 euros. Also we had hyperinflation. People adapted to extreme situations and live with less. In terms of beauty saloons that is a priority for Serbian women even if they eat once a day. In general most people spend money on things they can show to others: cars, clothes , having a big party, furniture etc. Some of those people did not go on holiday for 10 years or have been to theatre in their lifetime. Obviously there are exceptions but this is the general mentality

Inequality and hardship can be felt everywhere right now. A lot of people have not experienced luxuries, but it is good people here seem to be slowly letting go... and moving on.

Bro, I think someone milked you for money, because I've been living in Belgrade for 30 years and haven't heard of kuver tip :D The usual thing is you go to a restaurant, you eat, you get receipt, you pay for a meal, and if you liked the service, we usually leave about 10%. So, if I pay a meal 3k RSD, I leave about 200-300 RSD as a tip.

My personal opinion about this video (Since we met live)
    10. Parking is a big problem here, and people also "Guard" their parking spaces in front of their houses with buckets, chairs and bricks as if they were theirs even though they are public
    9. Traffic is a disaster, but Belgrade as a city does not yet have a subway. There were attempts to do it in the early 90s, and the promises stretch back to the 70s and the socialist regime.
    8. You can easily see if they have taxi meters, if there are two last letters (TХ) on the license plate, although it is not a guarantee. Nikola Tesla Airport is on the verge of introducing its own personal taxi service, which will drive people from the Belgrade airport to the city center, while other taxi drivers will only be able to drive to the airport due to taxi driver scammers waiting for tourists outside the gate.
7.I died laughing when I heard about the prices of cosmetics and perfumes. I didn't know it was so cheap in England
    6. A very good friend of mine runs a bar (a craft room with local brews of beer, brandy and gin) in Cetinjska street and they used to have reservations, but after a while they canceled them because the bar was always full. I'll take you there one day it's cool and cozy place with belgrade and Rock'n'rool vibe
    5. Unfortunately, most of them are owner's dogs, certainly more than 70% of dog owners do not pick up excrement after their pets. Everyone agrees that such people should be punished, especially in children's parks and playgrounds
    4. You already know here that football is the most popular sport, but unfortunately it is followed with little enthusiasm while basketball is adored. although Serbs themselves don't like big crowds and big screens when watching the game because then it can turn into chaos and fight, knowing our mentality. That's why most people watch games in pubs or in their flats with friends
    3. As long as any political structure supports the management of a club, there is nothing to remove that management. It's just the way it is. In the early 2000s, the gravediggers were also boycotting the home game, and one day, due to the small number of spectators, the administration allowed free entry to the stadium and locked only the southern stand. In the following matches, there were 15,000 people in the stadium every match, but literally every match was played despite spite. And after 4 years of struggle, the administration was overthrown
    2. I think that tipping was introduced by the French as something new and modern. Most people do not agree with it, even some restaurants and their owners
    1. We are poppy flower of the Balkan
    Stay well mate

le couver (Kuver) In a broader sense, apart from accessories, it includes the overall table setting with a tablecloth, napkins and glasses, both in households and in professional catering. Charging for envelopes is the bane of French restaurateurs, who considered it compensation for inventory maintenance, primarily for the costs of washing and ironing napkins.

today it usually means paying for the bread or pastry that does not go with the meal. Maybe it's normal for you to get bread with the meat without extra charge, but in some restaurants this is not the practice. When we were in London we did not see anything at all cheaper than in Belgrade - for instance, in a Tesco in NW London where mostly immigrants live. As a matter of fact, Vanish washing liquid was cheaper for, I think, a five litre bottle, or so, and a few items with reduced prices on account of near expired date of use. We did not see much dog poo in the streets, true, but we did see human poo in the public toilet sink at the end of the tube line there. Everything was much more expensive, from sandwiches and coffees to entrance tickets for all sights - on average 25+ pounds per person. No way you could visit something like Belgrade fortress, for instance, without paying a substantial fee there.
On the other hand, state museums have free admission, hats off for that.
I just remembered the lousy, watery coffee that we bought in Hallstatt, Austria, that we were charged almost ten euros for two cups. We would have never come in if it had not been the only open spot there that morning, obviously run by immigrants. The toilet there was subpar to most toilets in Serbian restaurants.
In a restaurant in Salzburg city centre, we were asked to leave when we finished our meal "because more guests are waiting", which could never happen in Serbia. And we were charged tap water in the same restaurant. Never got a single receipt in any restaurant, coffee or pastry shop in Austria.

    All valid, however:
    1) Belgrade is a very old compacted city not meant for modern traffic needs; it's in desperate need of subway/metro/tube to solve its transportation problems. I've heard they working on it.
    2) Soccer/Fudbal: I didn't understand the issue with soccer. Growing up I've followed Basketball, Volleyball and (European) Handball. Here in the States I do miss a good game of Handball.
    3) 'Tipping' is not customary in Serbia (and many other countries) so "Kuvar (chef)" charge means "compliments to the chef"! Many see 'Tipping' as 'charity donation' and somewhat 'demining'; I know, it drives me crazy too when I visit Serbia.
    4) Unfortunately there are many "community dogs and cats" people feed to prevent them from being caught by the city services and destroyed. Serbian people love pets but most can't afford to keep'em. So no one feels responsible for their poop. I hope Belgrade is still being 'pressure washed' every night like in the old days?!?
    5) 'Bars'; I'm almost 70 and I don't think I ever patronized any bar in Serbia or even here in the States.
Bars are not 'my thing' so I can't ever compare the Serbian 'Bar scene' with the one in the States. I did enjoy watching the sitcom "Cheers", though (if you are familiar with it) - it looks like fan. I'm natural 'outdoorsman' living in LA so driving to the desert, the mountains or the beach is fun to me.
There are some 'cultural adjustments' for westerners visiting or relocating to Serbia or the Balkans in general. It's essential to join a group of friends to hang out with as most socializing is done that way; well, unless you are a loner by nature. I only hope the good outweighs the bad!

Birmze, you are right about everything and most of us know it about all this but nothing is changed for decades. We just talk, talk, talk...blah,blah, blah...
Also I 've never heard about that "kuver" (kuvar-cook) charge or any other charge for a chef in Serbia. I go to restaurants and kafans for a diner or lunch from time to time. That's new for me.Probably some restaurants find the way to ripp you off. That kuvar-chef already has a salary, good salary. Probably the owner did not want to pay hiim enough so they make a deal and put a charge on customers. :)
About the World cup. In Serbia, we do not like football. I will repeat. In Serbia we do not like football. Yes, I know this sounds weird or like blasphemy but it is true. We like only winners. And in football Serbia is far away from winners. If you go to watch Red Star or Partizan games in national championship you'll see there are more people in every local bar or local bet place than at the stadium. We like to watch Red Star or Partizan only when they play the biggest teams from Europe. Others are not worth of our attention or anyof our effort. :)
We are kind a lazy fans. Sitting at home, get something to drink and watch the game on TV. Also, one of the main reason for this is so many politician in managment of sport's clubs and they are all connected with current regime. People do not like it because they do not like the regime. Neither do I. Even people at work do not speak about football day after the game. Back in the days it was totally different. People just lost its passion for most of the thing.
I'll tell you for myself. Even if I am a huge Red Star fan all of my life, and my whole family, I do not watch on Red Star games for years and very rear I watched it on TV. I am just not interested any more. The Derby- I do not give a fock any more. Few years ago Red Star played CL and my friend (Partizan fan) offered me to get me a tickets for CL, I was like "nah, not interested". He was surprised. :)
I spent about 10 years out of Serbia and during that time I had RS membership card and I paid for season ticket every year even If I know that I can't go and watch RS games because I was too far away from Serbia. Few years ago I gave up my membership and stopped buying season ticket.
Last week Red Star played national cup finale (I heard about it 2 hours before the game, haha) and I did turn on TV to watch it but TV was on silent and I spent all the time watching something else on YT. I saw we won but I just did not care, I was like "ok..." grab the remote and switched a channel.
I do not watch football much for years in general. Just a couple of games a year. Watched a little bit of Dortmund -Mainz last weekend and Dortmund lost title at home ground. Shock! Last night I watched EL finale Roma-Seville and I fall a sleep in extra time and woke up for penalty kicks. :) :) Right on time. :) They should started at 7pm not 9pm. :) That's all of my watched games this season.
Also I never go to watch games in bars, bet places or any other public places because I can't listen all those smart asses speaking BS about the game and know everything but if you look at them you can see that they do not know how many holes they have. As we used to say in Serbia - ne zna gde je šupalj.
Many times my good neighbor came to me to watch basketball EL and he's just talk BS all the game, especially if he takes a couple of beer. Many times I told him to shout up and watch the game or I'ill kicked him out. :D :D
Few years ago RS played against Arsenal, a friend of mine from US came to visit Serbia and want it to watch the game. I went with him, just to be together, but I remember I did not give a shit about the game. Did not care a bit. Also few years ago my uncle came from Australia and it was a national cup finale (and it was the farewell game for Nenad Milijas also) so he wanted to watch the game. I went with him even if did not care about it. I remember I got so bored about everything that I couldn't wait game to finish. Just do not feel any passion about it like before. Sometimes maybe for same euro games but not a 10% like I was before.
Same with national team. SoI belive most of people in Serbia probably feel the same so many of them do not care about football and sport and that is why there were no that football atmosphere during the WC 2022.

    • @stefanjoksa
      @stefanjoksa Před rokem

This very much sounds like a you problem and not the nations problem. The fans still go to matches. If you watch Red Star games you'll see that there are always fans there cheering for their club. Yes, it's not a pact stadion, but that's because our national league is very low quality and not very interesting to watch, so you'll see pact stadions mostly on european matches.
Majority of people do talk a lot about football and all other sports, wherever we have "representation". The fact that there is less hype about football is something new that's happened since covid. In general Serbia is less lively since covid, I don't really have an explanation for it. But, football is not hated or disliked in Serbia, it's the most important secondary thing in life for us even tho our football is pretty low quality at the moment. And yes, it's disappointing that there is not much hype about the big tournaments, but that stems from that fact that we've been disappointed too many times in the past, so we're mostly cautiously optimistic right now and we pay attention with reservations.
The fact that there is much more energy and love towards basketball is because we're simply better in that sport then we're in football and our 2 biggest clubs, Red Star and Partizan, play at the highest level in euroleague and Partizan even made it to the playoffs this season which is a huge success compared to other clubs which have much bigger budgets than both Serbian clubs.
So attributing all the boredom and lack of interested in football to us as Serbs is pretty much painting with a very broad brush which doesn't represent everyone. The true fans will always be with their clubs, they will always support their clubs, like Red Start supporters have done even when Red Star was on the verge of bankruptcy, but supporters are a big part of the club, so when the people in charge of leading a club are doing things that aren't good for the club or country, the fans make their feelings known and protest by not going to the games, this way they force the management to make changes. I personally consider this to be a both good and a bad thing. I'd rather have supporters protest then pretend to be happy about what's going on with their club. Not buying tickets or watching games is a way to force change, since sports are played FOR the fans, not the other way around. On the other hand, the supporters are known to protest against or for things that are of political nature and that is something that will always be polarizing. When I say the lack of protest, I mean what man united fans are doing, or rather aren't doing. One of the biggest clubs in the world is struggling big time and is being made fun of and the supporters keep going to the matches, keep buying dresses and keep hoping for the best even tho they know that the owners don't care one bit about the club and are only interested as long as the club continues to make money, which it does, since the supporters keep willingly giving their money away. So that's far from an ideal situation as well.

Tourists are everyone's fools, everywhere. In Belgrade, 99% taxis are safe if you call them by phone. Those at the Bus station and the Airport are notorious for praying on tourists, both foreign and from the country. Recently those at the Airport were banned, so that spot is resolved.

Kuver is actually not a tip, it doesn't go to the waiter. To make matters worse, waiters don't really understand it as well, and if you ask them, they'll translate it as "service", which is probably why you thought it's basically a tip. We all hate it, and outside of Serbia, you'll only find it in some extremely touristy places in Italy, Montenegro, etc.

In many "finer" restaurants in London you get to pay a "cover charge". And I worked in quite a few over the years. It covers the cost of what you basically didn't order but shows up on your table anyway. As you sit down, you get some lovely bread & butter, it could be a small plate of olives, cheese spread etc.. To munch on while you're getting ready to order.. And you may think, oh, how nice of them! But you get to pay for it in the end.. it is the same here. None if it goes to the waiter, that's for sure.

Maybe KUVAR? Kuvar = Chef. In restorants there is big problems because waiter get all the tips and don't share with chefs and rest of the staff. 80% of the time waiters are a scum and don't ever tip them (in Belgrade) because of that. But first time I hear about this.

    Captain here,
    Football
I'll explain the world cup lack of public support. Generations of football disappointment. People still sort of care, like my work stopped those days and we all watched, but not enough to have a critical mass to go to a town square. Going to a town square would make one look silly because we all know our football is dogshit. Year after year after year. After decades of me as a supporter braking bottles, doors, furniture (at my home) in agony after yet another disappointing outing I personally stopped caring, don't care about qualifying, us playing or anything. I knew straight up that we wouldn't do shit, people around me we're like "oh, come on, support the team". I wish them the best, but they would need to make it out of the group in order to have people want to try to create a festive atmosphere around it.
    Bars
Serbs are clanish and lok down upon solo outings. It's a bit of an L to go out on your own, people here want designated and separate booths at best, and tables at least. I love chilling at the bar itself, but that's unfortunately just not the culture here. When you look at it there are probably less than 5 bars in Belgrade (I know of only 1) where you can have a good solo experience while sitting at the bar.
    Great video, keeps it real.

Spot on man, I agree with everything you said. Except maybe for dog poo and World Cup. I think the big problem are the stray dogs, whole packs of stray dogs. They are out of control, and they attack people, attack owners dogs, poo all around. I cant stand them. But people here love them and feed them all the time, but rarely ever someone adopts them. And for Football, well nobody expected anything from them, they never achieved anything so that is why people are not that excited here like in England. Maybe we were unlucky this time with the key players injuries, but the bottom line is the end result was a complete debacle.
