    when it comes to tipping, it's not really as expected from people as in north america. i'd say traditionally it's been more common to round up the bill to the nearest clean number if the difference is less than 10-15%. for instance, if the bill was 800 and you gave 1000, it's completely fine for you to expect 200 as change, so essentially no tip. nobody would be giving you the stink eye for that. but if the bill is 950, you could be seen as cheap if you gave 1000 and sat there expecting 50 back (although i don't think anyone would raise the issue openly). overall, dinar is a small currency and nobody likes doing all that math with four digit numbers, so people tend to round things up

      @@TravelsInSpace I'll tell you what I think. The tobacco used for cigarettes here is of the worst quality. It has no nicotine at all. I used to be a smoker so I know. They add some perfume and pack cigarettes in different packages, but they are all same. They put enormous price, excises, taxes and some such. They (government) collect enormous money from cigarettes just like that. It is a completely legal illegal tax and because of that they don't care about restrictions, which would diminish their loot.

The legit ones usually have an actual name such as Lux, Pink, Beogradski, Gold, Alfa Bell etc… altho even the legit taxis are pretty expensive. If you have trouble pronouncing local names (street names when asking for directions, food menu, shop names etc) use a simple rule. When you see letter J replace it in your head with letter Y or I and you will have way less problems reading or saying what you red. Everything else will be close enough.

    • @LyraYT
      @LyraYT Před rokem +1

      As a casual fan of linguistics this pains me a little bit. Its definitely more closer to Y than I, however there is something wrong about “replacing it in your head with another letter”. Its like trying to anglicize serbian pronunciations which is a little bit stupid. Rather, try to put in a bit of effort to learn how the letters are actually pronounced, so if you see “J” pronounce it as “J” because thats what it is

    • @beograd07
      @beograd07 Před rokem +2

      @@LyraYT Replacing letters in your head so you can get around in a hurry is not anglicizing Serbian or teaching Serbian language. Don't be rigid. This rule would help strangers not only in Serbia but also in Croatia, Bosnia and Monte Negro. Especially in those countries where they have a "jekavica" and "ijekavica" dialect with plenty of J letters in them. But it is more a hand tool to help tourist to travel through these countries when they get stuck and need a local help (when telling taxi driver the address, or asking for a public transport direction or asking for a street direction etc). This simple "tool" is not a permanent language learning tool but a help out tool to appreciate Serbian (and other above mentioned countries) their hospitality and friendliness and make it easier for both parties to interact. You dont have time to learn other countries language rules before visiting and also you dont know which source to turn to.
      So imagine yourself traveling through Hungary and you are in Budapest and have to ask someone where is Szigetszentmiklós. Can you pronounce this? Will the taxi driver understand you? Or you are driving through Hungary, and your car is broken down at the entrance of the Pilisszentkereszt and you call road assistant for help and have to tell them where you are. You are going to beat your self up why you didn't take time to learn some basics in Hungarian before the trip? There is a trick for Hungarian language too if you know where to look for it. Or I can just tell you here and save you some time. Or maybe Greece? Have you ever travelled through Greece and got stuck there depending of your pronunciation of their written words?
      And for Y being closer than I it depends what is before and after these letters so if you suggest Y only I have seen them struggling with Y too. That is why I offered both and in that order. At the end anyone who doesn't like this suggestion dont have to use it and can take time and effort to learn how to pronounce these letters in former Yugoslav countries. This is not mandatory.

    Bus passes are tricky to get hold of - you won't be able to get them from the kiosks dotted around the city as they say in the guide books. The only place you can get them is at 6, Kneza Mihaila, next to the Belgrade Cultural Centre. Go through the ordinary glass front door, then up the stairs to the second floor. We went there a few weeks ago and they didn't have any 3-day passes, only 1-day (which you can't buy in advance, they have to be used on that day), 7-day or 30-day. They 7-day pass costs 800 dinars.

      No man we dont have much of black people here.
      There is very small number of people who came to study here mainly from African countries 😊
      Man race crated from Blacks and Serbs would be on some superhuman level stuff 😂

      you wont see as many black ppl in serbia like in western europe citys but in belgrade you´ll see alot, i personaly served serbian army in the year 2000 with a black guy whos father came to study from Ghana, if you are concerned about racism, we arent like that, in fact serbias constitution from 1835 was the most progresive in the world at that time, every human who put a step on serbian soil was considered as free man regardles of his race or where he came from, what we hate are colonialists. According to a 8 year Harvard study Serbia is the less racist state in europe.
      so if you question is if you are save as a black guy in serbia? you definetely are, ppl might stare at you but not in a bad way on the contrary because they are curious and interested

    I honestly do NOT feel that you did Belgrade any justice!!
    I’ve lived here off and on for 4 years, and your “tips” are all super self explanatory except the smoking part…
    And no Serbians are NOT “happy to help” they actually sincerely frown upon you for only speaking English and not Srpski…
    However it’s a Slavic thing, AND I agree with THEM! We’re in their country we should speak their language…
    I hate to give a negative review but you definitely didn’t spend any time on the good parts of Belgrade…
    Also, Belgrade does NIT represent Serbia as a whole, the rest of the country is quite different …
    I’d love it if you’d do a 2nd short talking about the difficulties and issues being a non Serbian speaking / non Cyrillic reading person…
    MAKE SURE UOU HAVE PHOTO TRANSLATOR ON YOUR PHONE
    AND INTERNET SUCKS generally here but there are many “free WiFi zone” areas especially near bud stops.
    Also Public Transportation here is TOP NOTCH
    TAXI’s…
    Legit or not you don’t get ripped off and you get where you’re going
    And belgrade/Serbia is mostly dog friendly also!!!

      You are absolutely the first and only visitor here who said that internet sucks in Belgrade.
      Literally everyone is actually surprised how good it is.
      A lot of vloggers upload their material sitting in cafes and without paying anything for it.
