Years ago, I was in an Artist in Residence program, and spent 18 weeks teaching music in two rural Georgia towns. One of the towns had a Christian (aka "white") private school, and although I did several community presentations, under the anti-discrimination policies of the program, I could not go to the private school. However, I convinced the education powers-that-be to allow me to go there with a special presentation in mind: without disclosing race or gender, I introduced the 300 students to the music of black and female classical performers and composers! They learned about George Bridgetower and his work with Beethoven, heard music by Mendelssohn (Fannie) and Schumann (Clara), Scott Joplin, Joseph Bologne (the "Black Mozart"), and William Grant Still.
Unfortunately, I had no opportunity for follow-up, but at the time, the students (and adults) seemed to enjoy the selections that were presented; hopefully some may have even been inspired to discover worlds previously hidden from them. 🌹

Each of these women invented a new way of doing something based on their needs, the people's need. This is the motivation that is required in our children's education straight from the womb. These women were brilliant! Most of these Black inventors created these awesome inventions while living under an oppressive system that constantly reminded them that they had no value. Public schools taught that primarily only one group made this country great! And many still believe those untruths, because they were only taught about their contributions. And these inventors didn’t have access to capital, because of who they were, yet their brilliance caused them to prevail!❤

@A O I know what you mean! And, the teachers added their bias personal feelings. They taught us very painful and brutal things that were not true, and nobody ever cared about our feelings! I had to reprogram myself with unbiased research and teachings! The US don’t teach about our contributions. They don’t even teach about how much the centuries of labor was so massive by the poor Slaves that it established the foundation of the American economy, and how our contributions through Slavery was more than the 3 or 4 Major industries combined!

Alice Parker favors Alicia Keys a little. On a serious note, I’m so glad these Black American inventors and inventions are finally coming to light. This is what happens when we take control of our own narrative that offsets the negativity biases internalized by much of the world about black people.
