Dual Purpose Cartridge - 6.5 Creedmoor or the .243 Winchester?

- Welcome to the Ron Spomer Outdoors Podcast!
All right, dual-purpose cartridge, the new 6.5 Creedmoor or the .243 Winchester? Mm, good one. You know, I wouldn’t say it's quite the toss up but here’s how I would spin it. For my personal uses, I would go .243 if it was mainly for hunting coyotes, and I'd go with the six-point Creedmoor if I was mostly going to be hunting deer and pronghorn and maybe elk, and only occasionally going for the fur. But even better yet, if you really wanna specialize in a fur cartridge, I would step down to the 22 calibers, 223, 22-250. Somewhere in that range or the new 22 Creedmoor if they’ve come out with it yet. I think they still have not made that a commercial round, but it's gotta be on the drawing boards here pretty quickly.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

My 243 has done great all these years
I just bought my wife one a few months ago now all she does is want to shoot her .243 I own a 30-06 and a .223 I use my .223 for deer and it does just fine
Imagine the gun room at this guys place!! 🤔😮😮😮😮☠️☠️☠️☠️
Holy smokes 😂!!
Agree 100 % with Ron on this .
The 6.5 Creed will get put thru the paces this 2023 deer season . And the 243 has been a hero in my line up for over 30 years . If she ( .243 win M77 ) barks and the game is inside 300 yds someone bring the truck !
243 on a doe at 150 yards is a wound u should see. It works.
I’ve lost deer with a 243 at 110 yards. 4 years with my 6.5 everytime that gun went off something died and I recovered it. Don’t know how people have a problem with the no blood thing. Federal trophy bonded in the boiler room leaves a real nice blood trail.
@Brandenuzis you can't compare a bad shot with 243 to a good shot with 6.5. 243 is plenty for whitetail
@@kevinheine1399If a 243 to the boiler room at 110 didn't bring down the deer than a 6.5 wouldn't either.
no doubt the 6.5 has been upand coming since its inception, even onto long range competitions but, the .243 has been doing it much longer and w/o the new technology to baby it along
New technology, what better shape?
My .243 has been getting everything done for me since 1977….. keep your Creedmoor. I never took an elk with it, because it is not legal here. But deer, wild pigs , even black bear, no problem
Been using the 243 Winchester with 70 grain nosler ballistic tips for varmint and predator for years and 100 grain nosler partition on hogs and white tail for years with great success, outstanding accuracy and performance and low fun to shoot all day recoil. Thanks Ron for another great video.
Ron, awesome information. I grew up in same time period as you, but out in the sticks with low wages. Sometimes we were given our first gun or bought the only one for sale in the valley. We shot that gun till we could afford the one we wanted,. Then we picked a weight of bullet and LEARNED how to shoot it. Gophers to grizzlies is what I always said.
I'd go with 6.5 Creedmoor, you can hunt deer and elk with the 140, 147, 156 grain bullets then you can hunt coyotes with the varmint 95 grain bullet, that's a multi purpose cartridge for me.
I would go with the .243. One, I’m more of a traditionalist. Two, I’ve owned a .243 and it’s taken multiple Deer and Antelope with a 90 grain ballistic tip bullet out as far as 370 yards. I’ve shot prairie dogs to 500 yards with a 58 grain V-max bullet, and the 65 grain V-max poleaxes coyotes.
I’m glad I found your CZcams channel Ron. I used to read your articles in magazines years ago. I really enjoy the content as well as the presentation.
.243 for me. 80gr power Shok ammo shoots .75" groups at 100, and is good for deer and coyotes. Have it in an AR-10 platform.
How much was your upper if you don't mind?
@@anthonyg4052 I got it from Bear Creek Arsenal, but there's tons of other companies that offer them. Mine was a little less than 400$. Actually smoked two coyotes with it last night, too.
@@kothliim6429 bear creek makes everything man lol congrats on the kills man! Also thanks for the reply
I've been reading Ron Spomer's stuff for what seems like forever. Really fun to start seeing some videos.
220 Swift is a great fur round. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that round.
I used a 243 100 grain Federal power-shok (just plain lead soft point) on a white tail in 2022. I've never seen a 243 do so much damage. Both are fine. Pick your fav and go hunting.
I shot a doe at 50 yards with the 243 the exit hole surprised me it was huge had to check if I grabbed the right gun 😅
6.5 has a much better selection of bullets. But the 6.5 needsmore is lacking in case capacity. The 25-06 is far superior to both.
I would go with .204 or 5.56 for coyotes and 6.5 Grendel since the Creedmoor is more of a jackal
.204 is my first choice. Love mine.
Love the 204 ruger for predator hunting
204 or 17 Remington for fur. 243 is good for big game too hard on fur
243. always
My grandpa had a lever action .243 Winchester and I absolutely loved that rifle.
We shot a LOT of coyotes with that thing, anyone out there who's never gone spotlighting coyotes has got to try it.
Many states even have a bounty on coyotes to where you can get a few bucks for each one you kill.
The .257 Roberts is my dual-purpose cartridge. 60gr. - 120gr. (small to medium game).
Note: If you don't mind handloading, that is.
The 30-06 Spr. is another. 100gr. - 220gr. (medium to large game).
243!!
I agree I use 22 magnum for everything besides obviously large game
I did a PRS match a while back where the first place guy used .22 creedmoor and won with a noteable difference from second. Absolutely blistering speed.
5.56/223 for fur. Just have good shot placement
If there was a chance I'd be hunting elk, I'd take the 6.5. For a true deer/coyote gun under 350/400yds in a factory gun I'd use the 243. Then again, with handloading and using proper bullets I can have a 100gr monolithic 243 with a .307 g7 bc moving over 3000 fps, carrying over 1200ft lbs at 600yds and 2300+fps. Not that I'd hunt game at that distance, but modern bullets really have revolutionized the smaller cartridges for big game hunting.
.243, the 6.5 is very overrated. It pales in comparison with the .270 Winchester in speed, energy and drop all the way out to 800 yds. They balance out after that but who's hunting at/past 800yds??
The .243 is a speedy little round that's versatile and will punch through armor... Don't get suckerd into these "slick," new rounds unless you know why you're doing it.
At 1,000 yds for target shooters, get a 6.5. For hunting and real world shooting ranges, stick with the tried and true. 😉
And if I'm going for something bigger than a .270 can handle (up to a mule deer) and need extra oomph for an elk, moose or brown bear, all the options for my trusty old .30-06 still makes it the choice for me because, you can load it for anything from a coyote to a grizzly. There's nothing on the north American continent that can't be taken with a .30-06. However, in the open deserts and places where you're taking long varmint and things white tail and under, a .270 and .243 are the way to go. West of the devide, those are the only 3 hunting calibers I need. East of the devide (way east) where the ranges are shorter and the brush is thicker, a .444 Marlin and.35 Remington will fill in any of the gaps and round out a fine collection of riffles.
I'm in agreement with the .22-250 as an alternative/addition to that and everyone should have a .22lr for the small stuff. But nowhere in there do I see a need to give up what I have and works as well *or better* for a 6.5 anything, unless I want to rring bells at 1,000 yds.
243 👍
Iv used a 243 since i was 13 never lost a deer 243 gets my vote
17 Remington is excellent for fur hunting. 3900-4100fps is super effective.
243s great for deer
Good points!
I'll stay with my 25o6
.243!
I'd go 243 because in two years' time , when they have come out with a slight cartridge variation. I still want to be able to get ammo.
I just found out about the 6 x45mm what do you think about it Ron?
6mm arc would be competitive
243 in my BLR any day for both deer or coyotes.
He said Pronghorn 🥰
Came back to this thread to say that I called in a coyote this morning. 6.5 creedmoor is not fur friendly if you hit too far forward. It was almost bald from mange, so I took the shoulder shot, it’s innards became it’s outards
The correct answer is .270 (as always)
. 243 WIN Great Deer/Yotie Gun !!!
.243 win for deer, 204 Ruger for fur
6.5 creedmore for all, ammo is everywhere
243 is a wound at 100 yards. 223/243 is strictly a predator cartridge
22 creed here we come!
Or .204 Ruger or .17HMR or .17WSM on fur. .22-250 will take deer if you practice good shot placement.
Or 25-06 would take care of those too
Imagine making the 25 longer but it could do in the x62 brass cartridge 🙃
That's the one to get the 25-06 already puts the yards in. 👍🏽
25-06 is an excellent deer and coyote round. It comes down to ammo availability at this point, 6.5 creed and.243 are both easier to find right now. No deer or coyote will know the difference in any of these cartridges
Yea a 270 takes care of all three at a time
222 is the best fur round
I hunted with a 700 REM. For a long time. Cal. 243 Win. My loads were 100 great. Sierra BT. I shot coyotes, deer 🦌, hogs, whatever !! I never shot a deer twice, nor did I have to track them. My point of aim was aprox. 8" below the ear on either side.
The only time I’ve had to track a deer with a .243 it was my fault but they still didn’t go far and all the others fell straight down.
I have a question. What would you recommend for running a thermal on coyote and hog? I can’t figure out what would be best for both. We hunt a lot of wide open fields with some occasional wooded hunts. I’m wanting to build a new gun but torn.
I would compare these two with 6mm Remington. I believe you'll see the Remington has fantastic performance in comparison and is overlooked.
Hood luck find ammo for the 6mm rem
243 all day
My 12 year old nephew hammers deer near or far with his .243.
243 all the way
Question what about the 7 mm? 08. Personal opinion that’s a good all around cartridge. Anything from coyote to mule deer I don’t know if I would try it on there elk but I know people have.
The Sierra 6.5mm 85 grain HPBT WAS a dandy coyote bullet. WAS . . .( discontinued )
I would always choose the more precise system.
Its easier to shove a hunting bullet into a 6.5 Creedmoor than it is to find .243 match ammo, and find a rifle that can stabilize those bullets.
243 all they way
I hope the .22 creed becomes SAMI soon !
Can you be my dad and teach me your skills
😂
Give me a 7mm-08 for deer, pronghorn, and elk and .22-250 for fur and varmints, but if I could have only one, then .243.
22-250 gets the point across very fast. Those are rockets.
Why not 25-45 sharps for coyote?
I would say 25-06, but i have to shoot some distances.
6mm ARC. That’s the answer you are looking for.
You mean 6mm ARC? Or did Hornady make a new round again?
What about 6mm Creedmoor
Neither, 6.5 X 55 , I don’t have any trouble with the length or extra recoil, and a good Arasaka action , is explosion proof, , my backup would be a 260 Remington, learn to use stripper clips and a extended eye relief, for thick timber( cover) if I had a type 38 that wasn’t rechambered I would choose a 260 because I can reload 308, brass. But I was fine with the recoil of a 270 win all the years I hunted northern. Nevada, and ammo availability was an issue until I had my hunting rig set up. With a set of lee hand tools, for 6.5 , but I always had close shots under 600 yards. I was taught to track and stalk by my old Man, that carried a 11 pound 06 with a Lyman Alaskan his whole life.
.243
25 06
224 Valkyrie
240 weatherby magnum
Since those rounds are not available can I get some from you. 😁
What about the .204 Ruger?
6mm remington
.270
I’ve killed probably at least 50 deer with a .243 over the years……quite a few of them on the run while “driving”.
243 Winchester all day
6mm rem.
I thought the 6.5creedmore was developed by nicking up a 22-250 case to 6.5 so wouldn't a 22 Creedmoor be a 22-250
I literally kill elk every year with a 243 out to 400 yds. white tail & mules as well. I still don't get why many hunters see it as a coyote cartridge. especially with expansion of bullets & there performance.
250 /3000 Savage if you can find one. that would be my choice.
6mm rem?
Hey everybody, how about a “.24 Creedmoor”? 😂 🤣
Why 24 cal when Thay can go with 25 cal
Like 25-06 orety does over 1000 yards.
That's the one to make longer bullet for the x62 brass cartridge now got the difference like the 264 Magnum range like my 264 for Antelopes.
@@jasonlopez4855 I was fooling around when I mentioned .24 Creedmoor, since it would be very similar to the .243 Winchester, right? Maybe just going for longer, heavier bullets, though. I’m no ballistician, anyway. Maybe a .20 Creedmoor, or a .17 Creedmoor? Let the games begin!
Wouldn't that just be the 6mm Creedmoor?
@@gabriellindig I suppose so. Like I said, I’m no ballistician, and I’d completely forgotten about the 6mm Creedmoor.
@@gabriellindig Lol, was just going to say that. There is a very popular.24 creedmoor available
Thoughts on 6mm arc as a fur round?
87gr vmax an go to work on the coyotes
@@waynemayle865 valid and based
@@larsmurdochkalsta8808 I run 65gr vmax an 75gr also with the 65gr alot of times there's no exit but it's in a 243 with my 6 mm creed I run the 87gr vmax an my 6mm remington I use 70gr. Nosler
@@waynemayle865 thanks for the info g!
6.5cm. 100%.
What about 243 saveg
I personally think both are good paper cutters but not good hunting tools
Oh great. Another Creedmoor....
.243- 100 grain projectile traveling at 3200fps is nothing to scoff about people have even put down elk and moose with a good heart or lung shot.
They suck trying to track a wounded dear for ten miles next I went to 30 cal n never wondered about a suffering again because I don't want it to suffer gottit
What about something involving the 5.7? Thats a 22.
.223..? Laughing..😂
No reason to buy a 6.5 if you already have a
.243 Winchester and reloading dies, and good materials.
Neither... if you're going .243 go 6 creed, if going 6.5 go prc....
New 6.5 Creedmoor ?? Invented in 2007. 17 years old ain't exactly new
Honestly, neither catridge.
It’s called .308 for everything
Calling 6.5 Creedmoor new 😅
Hey Ron. You know I'm gonna chime in here. If there was ever a cartridge I've learned to dis like it's the 6.5 Creedmore. Not because it's a bad cartridge. On the contrary. I think it's pretty decent. No, it's because of all the Hype. I've had people claim it's the end all be all of everything out there. I've beat it baddly I might say with my 270 Win. I can load from a 90grn bullet for coyotes all the way up to a 150 for Elk with the 1 in 10 twist. If I go with a faster twist barrel I can go to 170grns. Point being, I'm hesitant to use the 6.5 cm on Elk. You had better have perfect shot placement with it on Elk. Or you're gonna have a problem. When I finish that Fast Twist Long Barrel 270 I'm building you're going to be very impressed.
What about a 6.5 grinder
Well Ron ... I'm gonna have to cancel you , I've asked at least 6 different times for some history on the 221 Remington fireball
No love for the 7mm-08. To hell with the 6.5 trash.
7mm bullets have better ballistics for their given bullet weight.
6.5 don’t have the weight and hence no BC,
And a 30 cal bullets needs to be heavy with a mag cartridge for good long range performance
6.5 cuckmoor for elk? Nope. Unethical
