At first it had a cylinder 3 misfire and they replaced the injectors, and ever since then it's never ran properly. Honestly, I feel you bro @Brett Barnes. I have a bmw 1 series 118i 2012 and I just bought it recently like in February, the car seems to be in perfect condition with clear MOT with full wheel check and still looks pretty clean. But the problems start after 2 months, engine temperature too high comes up with drive moderately. Eventually, going to tens of garages found out my head gasket was gone. Nearly a month now my car is in the garage with other issues and still in the repairing stage…

What people have to remember is :
It is ONLY when a car goes wrong, that you hear people shouting as loud as they can about t.
BMW's are no more unreliable than any other German car brand, and there are just as many issues with Audi etc too.
You do not hear the hundreds of thousands of happy BMW owners, with no problems, because they have no reason to post videos.
I am 52 years old, work in the motor trade, and have owned 5 BMW's in my last 6 cars. If they were unreliable I would not own one.

    Hi Brett.
I don't usually comment on anything, but since this actually something I specialized on, I'll just give you a few tips, since you probably going for a 140 next.
I'm a BMW Master Diagnostic Tech and let me tell you B38 motors are oil eating machines.
Going for a tune on an already problematic motor wasn't a good idea, and not only that, it screwed you over in a number of different ways.
I might be recalling this wrong, but I believe you didn't had high mileage nor was the car that old. This means, if your services were done by BMW (or BMW-Service approved shops), you'd probably get a new motor for "free" (You'd pay man hours). The tune makes this option a no-go though.
If you notice your motor starts working differently, don't assume it's nothing. It's a motor, it doesn't have a will, if it works differently, then something is different.
For 3k, I'd get it repaired for sure.
If you get a m140, please leave the motor without tunes unless you're ok with the possibility of a big repair bill down the line.
I hope you get the car soon and wish you well!
    PS: Why a 140 and not a 240?

I have the same engine (B38) and can probably assume it’s the tune. I have always told myself never to tune it as it’s a 3 cylinder and is already under enough strain to handle what it has stock (assuming you have a heavy right foot). But I hope it goes all well in the end mate.

Just sounds like a misfire to me mate. It's likely the tune would've had an impact on the lifetime of plugs or coils (which is why you're meant to upgrade them with stage 1, I've had issues with my coils on a stock 1 series and it never turned out to be just the plugs). You shouldn't have been driving it like that at all and the garage shouldn't have let you leave the garage with it like that, that's what did the damage, bad garages. The tune wasn't the issue. Get yourself an honest garage and you'll never have issues.

I got the same problem with my car man, I truly don't know what was the solution I took it to the BMW specialist in my city and they didn't see the issue, is like if some ghost was playing with something in the engine.
They said they just did a "reset" of the computer (I'm ok with that since I don't have any special "tuned" configuration). After that day my car haven't had that issue again, I have a 120i though.

I had similar error with regards to drivetrain on my 2 series (which I just traded in), the issue was due to EGR valve which had supposedly just been replaced under a call back a few weeks earlier. Other than that no other issues over the 3 years I owned it. Loved the car but was time for a change.

I dont know about the UK but there are definitely tuners that offer 1-2 years guarantee for the engine, even though limited at about 5000 iirc. So if something happens with tuning in the future you´re on the safer side. At least with a daylie driver

It may not be their fault and just a bad car component too. You should ask Celtic tuning for all the calibrations on the map they added to your car

But once you have issues like this its good to just give it to we buy any car “as still running”. They dont even test drive and give you a decent amount. Thats what i done and then just bought another car its too much stress and it wont be fixed. Actual dealers are useless they dont knw anything in my experience!

From Audi experience when it’s goes into limp home mode turn ignition off and back on whilst engine still on an moving took it out of limp home mode.
