"I can either pimp the situation or I can fall victim to it"
-Kendrick Lamar
What does Kendrick mean when he says the word pimp. He frequently talks about the word and i know he doesn't mean it in its traditional definition."I can either pimp the situation or I can fall victim to it" or "...can pimp it to his needs". Can someone shine some light on this for me?
To turn a bad situation into a good one (lesson).
@@daman5551212 he means take his pain, lifes bad situations and turn it into a positive.
upgrade the situation
Magnum Pilos Its like a bad woman (a prostitute) can ruin a man's life, but pimps play smart and turn the situation to their favor.
Kendrick is just tryin' to pimp life, hope we all do eventually.
Great interviewer, he genuinely cares about the artist

Can't blame him when he's sitting with Kendrick, I'd slap the shit outta him if he didn't give a fuck while sitting with this guy.
Keith • he looks like j Cole if he wore glasses
Keith • iii
Keith • was thinking the same thing haha
Real Kendrick fans understand the setback this rap beef with drake is causing him mentally and although he's winning the battle I pray he also wins the war. He has worked so hard for peace of mind and happiness.
What you said!!!! All of this.
Yes 🙏🏾
Amen 🙏🏻
I pray he wasn’t bothered at all by this roast!

The only difference between kendrick and PAC is maturity. Tupac was smart but immature. Kendrick is smart and mature, he's basically what PAC would've been if he never died.
One of the most accurate insights I've heard on the comparison of the two.
da mn
+Jay Briggs bruh that's deep and i'm glad kendrick get to see my country South Africa.
Pac was very rebellious. A "fight back" guy.
Kendrick will just tell u what ur dealing with and leave it up to you how u handle it
+Jay Wizard he isn't as immature as pac. pac made diss records threatening to murder rappers, kendrick didn't do that. pac kept getting locked up and gettin shot, kendrick didn't put his self in that position. pac spit on people and cameras, kendrick keeps his cool.
It 's so calming and almost therapeutic to hear Kendrick talk. He's so wise..I could listen to him talk for hours about his passions, his thoughts, his music, and never tire of it.
Same he's amazing
W
finally someone said it
yeah he's chill he just sits back and stays quiet most of the time
How many men are out there that stories haven't been heard REAL wise men without fame and in the shadows.
I appreciate Kendrick for being so real about his life.
+Alain Bruno Kendrick is the best!!
+Alain Bruno I want a bf like him :D
+Alain Bruno he's lying bro

You nigga you're everywhere
kendrick hears god speak to him through homeless person
and we hear god speak through him
I have chills man this guy is fucking real
incredibly dope persona
Damn
God doesn't exist. what you are hearing is kendricks raw thoughts. He is a rare type of rapper that expresses his emotions on a whole new level of deep.
***** I have my own definition of god. Saying "god doesn't exist" as if it was the truth speaks of your complete ignorance. Go attend an ayahuasca ceremony then talk about god.
lol ive taken ayahuasca but i didnt know they had fucking ceremonies for it lol
***** well where do you think it comes from
I regret not going to see Kendrick when he came to my home town of Durban, South Africa. Come back soon Kendrick

Why can't Kendrick go to South Africa.... Artist have international tours all the time
***** this nigga said sorry i was high lls
*****
I saw Kendrick in South Africa. In Johannesburg.
Donovan O'Leary I was at the Cape Town show!!!
It's crazy how on the Album Kendrick interacts with the devil through a hot girl. Someone he might want to or is expected to engage with, but when he's presented with a homeless man (someone he doesn't want to or isn't expected to engage with) it's God.
RADubs that right what he said there all in a nut shell in Johnny Depp's movie the 9 gate was pussy I always felt some ill aged voice trying to convince me to tie the knot which sounds like cutting off
It could help that the devil is supposed to be everything people could ever want. And that people have this misconception that God is showy. He's like a whisper in a roaring wind, you have to pay extreme attention to notice Him.
Ashley La Mar thats a beautiful way to put it
That's exactly what the devil temps you with. Everything you could ever want. God gives you what you NEED. Ironically, I've heard so many say that when they compare Kendrick with other music artists... they say other rappers give us what we want but Kendrick Lamar gives us what we need. Pretty dope.

I’m here in 2024. As a black mother raising two black sons in S. Los Angeles I want to say how much I appreciate Kendrick for being a good voice of reason and shedding light on our people and our struggles. He is truly humble and spiritual person and I pray he remains this way. Great interview.

Kendrick has such sad eyes, you can tell he's seen terrible things.
His eyes are like that because of a genetic defect.
dash the hitman what was that song he said it in again? I remember that verse.

@@MiguelGutierrez-vv2ed i agree!
His eyes are so.....idk. makes me cry 😢
He has gentle eyes and a gentle heart
Kendrick appears to experience emotions 10X more intensely than the average person. Even things that most people would consider trivial have significance for him. He is the type of person who learns from everything around him. This is why when he speaks, his words have weight.
Kendrick isn't 2 Pac. He could be the "brain"that Pac said he would "spark", but these are 2 different individuals on a different mission.
+Fleezy81 I believe they have the same mission just a little bit different approach. Kinda like Malcolm X and MLK
+Jim Kanani yes I agree with u. Kendrick wouldn't say he has a different mission than Tupac. He would say it's the same which is why he's always looking up to Tupac. They just both grew up in different times but trying to preach the same sort of message.
+JOHN HINOJOSA Did you mean Kendrick is the reincarnation of Tupac?
+Fleezy81 I'd say Kendrick is something like the Pac of your generation. Glad he also gets all the praise he deserves.
+JOHN HINOJOSA I dont see the J cole comparison at all gtf with that kendrick on a way different level
I fell in love with "u" the second I heard it, so intense
Trust. The second part where he's drinking is some real heartbreaking shit.
I didn't like it when I first heard it, it was too all over the place. But it's one of my favourites now that I've listened more and I understand what it's about and I've gotten used to the crazy sound the song has and why it makes sense for it to sound like that. The whole album is incredible really.
To be honest, it took me quite a lot of listens the whole way through TPAB to actually fuck with "u". It was only one time though when I closed my eyes and just listened to it, when it got to the part where the spanish housekeeper is knocking on the door and that crazy dirty beat slips in from left to right, and then when the beat fully kicks in like BAM! Shit just hit me so hard I almost started bawling my eyes out, it remains my favourite track after I experienced that.
@@JoePesciBallsack what a great description of listening to that song man, I just relistened to the album and "u" really took me by surprise, I didn't realize how deeply personal and powerful the song was until now
For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief. - Ecclesiastes 1:18
Medicine Man Amen.
Can you explain that quote to me?
it means the more knowledge you get on the world the more sadness and disappointment that you will incur. simply because you’ re learning the true faults of the world. its like finding out your idol is a douche bag. it somewhat crushes your spirit. its like the saying "the truth hurts"
BaraZulu tears 😭 you ain’t never lied!
Very true, with wisdom and knowledge you get to see the world as it is and that is heavy for the soul and your mind because you have to work up every day and navigate through this crocked world. Sometimes not knowing puts your mind at ease because you do not stress much.
I've stayed away from rap and hip-hop for most of my life. I always used to think the music consisted of simplified and uninspired rhythm backing up hateful and violent vocals only aiming to gain popularity from shock value.
To Pimp a Butterfly was the first rap/hip-hop album I have ever heard, and holy crap was I ever ignorant on the genre. I don't think I have ever heard a more personal and intimate record. The flow of the album is just sublime. Each track, each idea, flows effortlessly into each other painting a mosiac of different experiences.
I freakin' love this album. This is the last time I judge a book by it's cover.
Please understand. I'm glad to hear that you love To Pimp A Butterfly with the same passion that most of us do, but I'll be the first one to burst your bubble; very, VERY few Hip-Hop albums are quite like To Pimp A Butterfly.
Hip Hop would be boring if every album was like TPAB. Album is a classic, but serious stuff all the time would get annoying and depressing.
That is why you don't listen to radio hip hop and judge the entire genre by the shit music they play there
Jsalcedo23

I'm not a psychologist (though I'm studying it) and don't know much about Kendrick Lamar, but the way he looks around when he speaks, and then looks intensely in the eyes of the interviewer, shows that he speaks from an honest, intellectual standpoint yet you can see that he himself has seen many things that broke him and made him wiser, and stronger.

He's so self-aware. You can see it in his eyes, too. He's been through things, he's doubted himself, he's been used, he's been tempted, he's achieved things and perhaps not felt the elation that is expected when you reach certain milestones. He's gained power and felt powerless at the same time. I saw him back in 2016 and the energy in the stadium was electric. I will never forget it. TPAB is one of my favourite albums of all time. As an artist and as a person of influence, Kendrick exists on an entirely different level. This may sound pretentious as hell but he's like the Bob Dylan of rap. He's a poet.
Yup its like struggling all of your life to one day wake up in a paid for home with a full fridge. It can trigger you in a very scary and different way
I think he's making a difference just by opening up about all of this stuff on and off the record. Not that that's all he needs to do or will be happy doing, but he's made me look at a lot of stuff in a different perspective at least.

This man is a fucking genius! He makes you think unlike people like Lil Wayne and Drake ! Keep doing you King Kendrick
***** Drake is the biggest fuckboy rapper out there. He sucks shaft.
+Calvin Odom nope.
+Ibrahim IBz I don't get why there's always a constant need to compare. each to his own. yes, most of the music lil wayne and drake make is full of crap. but they are two of the hottest rappers in the game right now. i mean, when you compare them to the likes of bobby shmurda, 2 chains, meek mill and i could go on forever. but like i said... each to his own.
+Calvin Odom damn chill chill! they're both tight as fuck calm down! Drake talks about personal shit that's on a much more relate-able level b/c he always talks about failing relationships and shit and how fame has strained him, whereas Kendrick is talkin about shit that could probably only pertain to he, himself, but we all fucking love it b/c this is some shit we never heard nor did we ever think we would hear this from any rapper ever.
+VTK XTO You're right. It's comparing classics to bubble gum rap

The "Lucy" reference really made me think about the character "Damien" from DMX's albums, specifically "It's Dark and Hell is Hot". I know Kendrick is a big fan of that album and DMX....

TPAB isn't a mainstream album ya know? People who are calling the album "shit" aren't listening to it. They just jump to that because they're too lazy to listen and dissect and understand the full meaning behind the lyrics. And even the poems that is just straight spoken in the album. You can learn some real shit from Kendrick and especially this album and it's a damn shame when someone's ignorance keeps them from that
Calvin Hidde so true man
Dark Angel We all have our preferences and tastes. I personally don't listen to much hip hop but I love Kendrick and TPAB. I don't get or like every song I've heard from him but I simply love TPAB and GKMC and I love listening to him talk on interviews. There are other artists that I know are very talented too but like you I can't get to enjoy their songs. It's all a matter of preference.
@@DarkAngel2512 There is alot of great lyriscism in TPAB tho. If your problem is with the production, then to each his own

As someone who hasnt been through nearly as much as kendrick, but does strugglr with depressioj etc. It really helps me listening to him.
You can tell by the way Kendrick speaks that he's straightforward and real with you and not just bullshiting anything he states. What really got me was when he mentioned how his close friends died in the streets and how he felt survivors guilt on tour when it happened in the summer as he was overseas. He's really down to earth and honest.
The thing that strikes me about Kendrick Lamar in these interviews is his HUMILITY. He's so HUMBLE...so UNASSUMING....so DOWN TO EARTH! It's incredible that this humble man created the hip hop masterpiece that is To Pimp A Butterfly....
Your comment aged well
Kendrick & Nas are gifts, they transcend the genre
I still love seeing this it brings people down to earth. He puts his all and his life into his music a d goes through life just like the rest of us
"I can either pimp this situation or I can fall a victim to it" - that's deep and inspiring
I'm just gonna say it. Very few people in hip hop are as down to earth, clever and as ground-breaking as Kendrick.
love that he was so open about this! "Mental Illness" is real and too many of us are sweeping this under the rug.

Kendrick is so down to earth it's simply eyeopening. Someone with his success, someone with his intellectuality, its amazing to see he's still right here with us and not flying off into the space of fame and money. The silence and lack of background music is greatly appreciated. The central focus is very serious and calls for that same silence.
I literally have my moments when I'm chillin with my friend or my brother and I suddenly just think about summin from TPAB or GKMC or any of Kendrick's albums, and we literally sit for hours and talk about his lyrics and meaning and deeper meanings within songs and their titles themselves. Rare to come across not just a rapper than you can do this with but an artist in general. Find it fun as hell haha, and besides from his music being so good, it's one of the main factors why Kendrick is my favorite artist

“u” is my all-time favourite song by Kendrick, with “untitled 05 | 09.21.2014.” very closely following behind. That passion. That rawness. That soulful nakedness that most are afraid to bear. A reason for living. A reason for believing something…
