Kendrick Lamar is not overrated, he is certainly not a sell out nor did he get on his knees to get to where he is. Kendrick i a one in a trillion, he managed to get through the industry without selling out and without falling into temptation of greed, lust, and selfishness. I highly respect Kendrick Lamar because his verses are his actual thoughts and his state of mind. I respect him because he is a man of the Lord. He even made me realize that I need more faith and I feel incredible. Religion or not Kendrick Lamar knows right and wrong and he fights for whats right and he fights for what he believes in. He is a descendant of Tupac. Tupac died speaking the truth and that is why i highly respect Tupac. The same is being done with Kendrick. He even directly asked us, the fans, if something tragic happens, will we still believe in him? Kendrick is on another level than the average rapper that talks about money hoes and drugs. Kendrick speaks the truth and managed to pull it out amazingly. Kendrick is a disciple and he is spreading positivity to the streets, and that is the very reason why he is the number one MC of this era.

Excellent interview!! Landed here in 2024! 50 yr old Mom just exploring Kendrick Lamar following his recent feature on of the “Like That” track from Future’s We Don’t Trust You album. Started with Good Kid M.a.a.d. City. Now on TPAB. ❤it. Gonna double back to Section 80. Then the Unreleased, DAMN…Mr. Morale BSs. No rushing. Gonna “live with” each one of them as Kendrick would say. Enjoying the journey. Kendrick is definitely now my fav.
I’m from the origin era of hip hop (late 70’s-80’s). I watched it go from late night/weekend only radio and midnight video shows on BET only to being premiered on MTV’s Yo MTvRaps. I pushed tissue down in the top tabs of a many of cassette tapes to record the midnight mixes off the radio and had hurry up and press “pause AND play” to pause when the DJ cut to commercials.😂 That was the only way to get the music. We couldn’t afford to buy the actual records/cassettes from the record stores. Then we dubbed our mix tapes on our 2cassette boom boxes. Grabbed some masking tape, a sharpie marker real quick…labeled it.. keep going till the tape was full.✅
Kendrick takes me back to that. That feeling. That excitement. That longing to HEAR. To LISTEN. To DECIPHER. To DECODE. To ARRIVE. You couldn’t vibe until you journeyed with the artist and arrived at the message, the understanding. It took some rewinding, some replaying, sometimes even a dictionary, asking questions, some conversations. Then some smiles, some head nodes, some affirming eyebrow raises…some being impressed, schooled, enlightened, entertained…that was hip hop. It was engagement.
    It’s good to be home❤.

When I first heard the title of the album, "To Pimp A Butterfly," I immediately thought about "To Kill A Mocking Bird." Either way, it's such a great concept--the frailty of a caterpillar vs the beautiful uncertainty of a butterfly: his music is a reflection of the social condition. Any artist that spends time creating a relationship with his album allows us to enter it with the same energy. It's not about making a hit song, it's about making body of work.
I mentioned that in my album review video, and it feels great to see Kendrick express exactly what he wanted to convey on his album.

I love that, though he's a christian artist, Kendrick has the humility not to act as though he's without sin and doesn't put on a "holier than thou" facade, and that he makes music about the world and the people in it, rather than just more safe devotional songs marketed towards an audience pressured into feeling like bad christians for liking anything but a particular type of music, and that grows more fickle day by day. Kendrick's music is what good christian music should be, an analysis of the world an artist sees coloured by their belief in and relationship with God, rather than just another bland praise song. Rolling Stone called him the most influential rapper of our generation, and I'm not about to disagree with that.

I didn't know people were ok with ghost writers. i'm not at all. I remember being told diddy admitted to having a ghost writer, and I lost all lyrical respect for him and never took him seriously as an MC again. Hip-Hop is all about individuality and what you bring to a verse with your voice and POV. Using a ghost writer completely cuts that out and makes your lyrics insincere to me. I need to hear a unique voice and a unique perspective

I'm so glad to see this dude get this type of credit. Kendrick has taken rap and hip hop to a place that hasn't been reached before. At least not to the masses.
