Yes it should be disconnected from service. If the voltage is more than 10 it will destroy the meter and also give false reading. Please read the user manual reg the max voltage limit that the meter will work safely in energised service without disconnection.
When current is injected into the earth, then the voltage will change around the location of injection. The voltage reference cable spike needs to be some distance from the points where current is injected or removed, in order to try and find a location with minimal disturbance of earth voltage potential.

I have to perform this same test but outside of the building is all concrete, a shower room will be built in the basement but first the neutral to earth voltage needs to be tested, so how would I go about this?
Check with normal clamp or multimeter in volts mode between earth and neutral of any 3 pin socket connected to that service. The voltage value should be below 2. Hope this helps.

Short C1 and P1 and connect to electrode under test. P2 is for potential and C2 is for current spike. This is known as 3 point or Fall of Potential method. 4 terminals method is for testing soil as per Wenner method. This is for civil guys and not for electrical guys. Reg 2 point earth pit resistance testing: In India we don't/cant use this method because our public water supply is thru PVC pipes which is non conductor. Hope this helps.

Eg.: If 1 st electrode buried depth = 3 M then second electrode should be installed at a distance of minimum 6 M away and both should be linked with wire or strip at the top. 3. Wet the pit by watering because dry earth is a bad conductor. Note : Chemical electrodes are fraud work. Hope all this helps.

Most manufacturers wont tell this because the distance will affect their tester sales in city and town areas where space is congested. So they suggest 5 M and 10 M which will not yield correct value. I challenge Kyoritsu in this matter.
It depends on your country standards. But the Best is the nearest to 0 ohms which is imposible to get 0 ohms. Also there are many methods to make the measurraments, it depends on your country standards too.

green wire is for grass. grass is green. make sense right? put green wire on grass and see resistance of grass. grass is green, green wire is green too. make sense right? right.
Use a combination of vertical and horizontal grounding! My tip would be get copper/or in poorer countries galvanized pipe works well enaugh and install it in conjunction with galvanized steel bar/ or do the same but with copper if you can afford it!

The valor is over the Range selectionated in the istrument or the cables are not conected correctly to the Spikes You should to check again all the conections. If the problem continue changue the Spikes of place.
Very Very different to how it's done in the UK, In the UK those reading wouldn't be satisfactory but the method is way different so I don't know. Interesting though

Why to use this device with long cables and sticks while THEORETICALLY one can get more relevant results using any household electric appliance like, say, Incandescent light bulb, a mulimeter and the old good Ohm's Law? One terminal of the bulb is connected to live (hot), the other to earth and the current is measured. Divide voltage by current and subtruct the bulb's resistance and the result is the earth resistance. What is wrong in such approach?
I get what you mean and yes you can get accurate measurement through ohms wall but use a proper load resistor that is large enough to limit the current so the damage you will cause on the ground rod is limited.

It means your earth grounding is perfect, anything less than 5ohm always consider perfect earthing as per indian standard 🙂

It's over limit. U need to dial up the limit. Cannot use 20ohm. Because the reading is above 20 ohm

All earth rod supplies these days are carbon steel with copper coating add to and go deeper using brass connection.

Maybe the humidity in UK is different if we compare to Malaysia. The water in soil can effect the meter reading.

The results would only be resistance on the load , not main earth resistance
