Bullshit. He took an unelected, unaccountable position, supposed to be impartial, and made it about as partisan as it was possible to make it while just about remaining within the law - by bending whichever law he needed. He not only made the position of speaker more powerful, he did it for the purpose of making it political. The British people were left at the mercy of chance with no way to hold him accountable, other than the tiny minority of voters that make up his constituency.. which has now been the only way to stop him further taking a wrecking ball to parliamentary precedent. He created backbench prime ministers at his digression, taking over the order paper to do things that had no mandate whatsoever, to trash the bargaining position of the UK with the EU, a position built on the strength of British workers, and trash what the British people said to do with that bargaining position, which was negotiate a deal worth having, which you only get with WTO Brexit still available, so the UK is actually allowed to walk away from negotiations. He has been catastrophic for voter trust in our democracy and cannot go soon enough. How someone can have such personal pride and ego, when your job should be simply that of a facilitator I have no idea. The antidemocratic corruption of our institutions is personified in this man.

It's because the speaker used to be responsible for relaying information from parliament to the king/queen. However, in Tudor times the speaker would often be beheaded if the king wasn't in a particularly good mood so the position was not a desired one, hence the pulling against their will to their new seat.

Troy Dowling: You mean when they seize John's arms and start propelling him towards the Chair? George Radcliffe gives an interesting reason below (which knowing the Bloody Tudors is all too credible!) If I hadn't read George's explanation I would have thought it probably went back even further, e.g. to Henry II haha.
