Episode Description: Buc-ee's is an unconventional convenience store that has been trying to expand into multiple new areas throughout the country. This video focuses on what I believe to be the biggest reasons behind their success so far and why they could potentially achieve their goal of becoming a national chain.

I think one way Buc-ee’s could stay competitive nationwide would be to regionalize different location. For example, in Wisconsin they could rollout new products like their own version cheese curds only sold at Wisconsin locations. It’d keep the local population interested and even make it a travel destination for some people

    • @cats400

I've been to 4 Buccees. They are sort of regionalized. In Florida they are geared towards beaches, promoting boogie boards, swimsuits, umbrellas, and beach towels. In Alabama, they promote river touring with kayaks, and hiking gear. In Georgia they promote camping, and fishing. In Texas, they have a massive cowboy hat section. It's all minor differences, but effective.

So many women are so afraid of "unsafe" restrooms but how common is it for a woman to be sexually assaulted in a restroom? If you really do feel unsafe carry pepper spray, know self-defense, and carry a taser. Women are evolutionarily hard-wired to be hyper-cautious to prwvent behind sexually assaulted or killed. But in today's America the vast majority of sexual assaults happen between people who know each other or live near each other. There just aren't many people going out of their way to rape women.

I walked around the store with a coffee in one hand and a big slushie in the other. It was fun. What's so funny is that if you described the concept of Buc-ee's as a potential business idea to someone, they would rightfully think you were crazy.

  • @markl.1408
    @markl.1408 Před rokem +96

Several big things about Buc-ee's you didn't hit on.
1.) They make and bag their own ice on-site and is why they can sell 20lb bags for $0.99.
2.) They hold a patent for their soda fountain system and chill the incoming water very cold to reduce the amount of ice melt in the beverages.
3.) They are VERY strict on employees, and do not have places for them to sit in the back for break. You stand and eat your lunch, for example. They expect a LOT for what they pay, which is well above any other store.
4.) When they contacted ICEE to put machines in their store, ICEE was not convinced they needed more than once machine. Nobody ever needs more than one. They had to invite their ICEE representative to a store to show them the size and scale of the store to convince them. (This was told to me by a senior-level employee during a behind-the-scenes tour I was on, as I worked for vendor they used).
They do have a cult following, but it was earned. The jerky wall isn't just "a lot of beef jerky", it is dozens of flavors of very high-quality beef jerky. The sheer amount of food they make on-site is staggering - fudge, nuts, cookies, BBQ, kolaches, and so much more. And all of it exceeds any sort of "gas station quality" preconception you might have.
It only works because the two guys own it and refuse to lower the quality or cut costs on the good and services they provide. If they had shareholders to answer to, they would eventually cut costs and become another store with sub-par, "gas-station-quality" goods and services.

The new Athens store in AL follows the same formula as the Buc-ee's expansions in TX with positioning between major cities: it's right off of I-65, around halfway between Birmingham and Nashville (~2hrs from both), and near the I-565 junction to Huntsville (almost right at a half hour to the Saturn V).
Also, this is the kind of area that still gets really freaking excited for new chains. Over the past decade, there was a similar level of hype around Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. Heck, when I was in high school in the mid 00s, my school's marching band played the opening of the Walmart Supercenter. This is absolutely a place where Buc-ee's can thrive.
One caveat, Buc-ee's here in AL still feels very TX in a strange way. Like, there are some small Bama touches to the homegoods sections, like AL-shaped signs and kitchenware and a fishing section, but there was mostly a strange amount of southwest-specific items that were fun to look at but not anything I could see myself or most people from this area buying.

I work at Buc-ee’s, and I can promise it’s probably the safest place you can go to on the road in Texas. Everything about Buc-ee’s is structured in a way to ensure every customer and employee’s safety, and I’m not exaggerating. For instance, another reason an employee is always in the bathrooms is not only to ensure cleanliness, but to also ensure that there are no issues where someone is in there when they’re not supposed to be. Also, notice how the walls in the stalls are closed off and the doors are lower-set compared to other convenience store bathrooms? Same reason.

It has a kitchen and bakery you can see into to know what you're getting. They also have a gift shop, a mini-mart, and a massive selection of sodas, and a large cup's price is in the same ballpark as Circle K. @@PeachMilkPopp I concur!! I had to travel from CT to FL recently and it was right in the middle of the journey in Florence, SC off I-95 and we were blown away after stopping for gas and a pit stop. If you've ever stopped at South of The Border, this is nearby and I frankly loved it WAY BETTER! I couldn't wait to stop there on the way back home either as it was at the right distance for gas and pit stop! Their pecan logs are actually very good and not too sweet and the coffee is good as well as the pulled pork and brisket sandwiches. I live just a few miles from a Buc-cees here in Texas, and I can say much of this was pretty spot-on. Here's a few other things that I think are worth mentioning:
-The immense and eclectic selection of souvenirs and merchandise goes way beyond just branded stuff. They also carry a lot of beautiful and high-quality stuff produced by a variety of companies, including small businesses, local companies, and artisans here in the state. My wife and I have, by total accident, run into each other in our Bucc-ees while Christmas shopping for each other. A lot of their selection makes phenomenal gifts.
-The place knows how to handle a crowd. Even in the middle of the afternoon on a holiday weekend, when the roads are packed with travelers, it's possible to get in, get what you want, get checked out, and get out without getting completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of people.
-The food is far, far better than what you'd think of as "gas station" quality. The barbecue is genuinely better than some dedicated BBQ restaurants I've tried around here. It's definitely a better, fresher meal than probably 95% of available fast food from other restaurants and gas stations. (Also, those in-house potato chips are killer.)
-They have their gimmicks, but the brand has built itself to be uniquely and unmistakably Texan to the point where it's now a cultural icon here. I joke with my friends from out of state that if you ever want to find the Texans wherever you go, just wear a Buc-cee's shirt. The Texans won't be able to keep themselves from gleefully pointing it out and stopping you to say hello.

We got our Buc-ee's, in Crossville TN, nearly a year ago. I worked at a place where they needed the land that we were on, and I ended up documenting the construction progress, of the Crossville Buc-ee's from before construction to completion, and beyond. We ended up getting a new building out of it, too. As far as I'm aware nobody had ever done that before on CZcams. Buc-ee's brings in those that would have normally just driven on by, and those that stop visit other places around Crossville.

As a Texan, one of the important aspects of Buc-ees is that you know where their stores are. You watched them pop up and got excited to hear when they were expanding on a route you often travelled. This is when they became big...New Braunfels, then Madisonville, then Temple, then Fort Worth, then Terrell... You would then plan any highway trip with a Buc-ee's stop in mind. If you are on an interstate, the billboards only remind you of something you are keenly aware of.
You are there for the experience and ironically the experience doesn't get old. Buc-ees is not cheap either. Their items, especially snack and food products, are marked quite high, but it doesn't matter because you will pay it. This is because you will stop for gas and the bathrooms...and the next thing you know you've bought $50 worth of snacks and $100 worth of souvenirs and other junk that you could have bought at Hobby Lobby instead. You will do this because you will visit grandma twice a year in San Antonio fully intending to hit Buc-ees in either Temple or New Braunfels at least once during the trip. You'll even do this AFTER spending $40 on kolaches at the Czech Stop in West.
