- If you're looking to bling-out your FPV racing mini-quadcopter or RC plane then LEDs are the way to do it.
Banggood.com offered to send me free stuff but I thought I'd spend my own money and buy these so as to check out, not only the product, but the service as well.
As you can see... the LEDs are okay and the service was pretty good, taking just over a week from the time I ordered until they arrived in the mail by registered post.
I now have another order on its way from Banggood.com (which I once again paid for as a regular customer) with more goodies for review.
This product can be found at:
www.banggood.com/LED-Decoratio...
I bought six of them so the price was US$1.66 each - Věda a technologie
I wonder how many guys get in trouble or a raised eyebrow from their wives when they see the charges from banggood on the credit card statement?
REAL MEN don't "Get in trouble". LOL
+D. Love agreed.
Green light always appears 40% brighter than other color light, red light comes next then then yellow, blue and violet, so naturally blue light would appear the most dim. My guess is it is near the end if the visible light spectrum and we don't pick up as much of it as other colors like red or green which are more centered in the spectrum.
it's not just your guess, the cones work like that, that's why things look greenish in the dark, like a bit greenish gray. Batons, which can sense all the colours, are way more sensitive than cones which are the ones responsible for the colours so in the darkness you see mostly in grey scale.
Furthermore, we have TWO cones for green, so the eyes are quite more sensitive to that colour. then comes red and then blue which is the less sensitive one
The ideal way to measure the leds' brightness would be with a light meter, luxometer i think they were called. Eyes are too inaccurate, they have dynamic range, poor saturation and you dont even get a number out of them, just "what you feel like".
Laharl Krichevskoy Bang on mate. Good answer. Just one minor; it's rods and cones in english - maybe they say batons in the states but I think they use what we use here in the UK: rods... I imagine the French say batons though ;-)
They say cones and rods in the states, I have never heard of batons used to explain it before.
Cool. Thanks for the info....It's gonna be a translation thing. Baton is french for stick, or rod so....
Jon Doe
ha, sorry about that. i speak spanish, my bad. Both rod and baton translate to the same word here ("baston"), so i kind of went "google translator" on that one because it sounded similar :P
Bear in mind that eyes are most sensitive to green light, so they should look subjectively brighter for the same intensity.
I got a whole 5m strip of household LEDs which can be cut up in multiples of 3, so I used about 50 of them on the bottom and sides of my quad operated with an RC switch - only draws about 600mA, and give plenty of light.
Then I discovered some 12V 320 lumen LED spotlights in the store and bought 4 of them - they have built in switchmode voltage converter and are equally bright on 2S or 4S which was a nice surprise.
They give out as much light as a car headlight, and I mounted them on a spar connected to a servo that can rotate them forward or down - well worth a try, and cheap too!
I've just put in my 36th order with Banggood and I must say that their service is quite good. Shipping can take a while but that is to be expected for the price. Aftersales has also been fine for me, some parts that were DOA have been replaced after I provided some proof they were really dead..
Merry Christmas from here in Michigan, U S of A. Keep up the good work. I have enjoyed your videos and maybe learned a thing or two.
I have been buying from BANGGOOD, for almost 2 years now, and I can say only good things about them, I bought 3 helis, repair kits for them, lots of arduino stuff, over 40 orders, and everything came in time, very quick shipping I live in europe (croatia), and most of packages came within 2 weeks, they didnt lost a single package, everything came working, nothing came broken or something, BANGGOOD is really great, I would suggest them to everyone
I have about 3 orders with banggood and so far no problems. In fact my last one was a Mobius at the first of the month for $ 68.00. I am glad you did a review of there LEDS. I was thinking of getting some. To bad they do not do a set oh white ones too.
You look good Santa! Merry Christmas to you sir!
grow that thing out Bruce, then youll be a real RC wizard :D. Also Ebay is a great place to get LEDs, I got some waterproof led strips each with 15 leds, pre wired and can be cut down to sections of 3, they were 1.50 CAD with free shipping and arrived in under 2 weeks. They run on 12V and are not super bright but plenty bright enough to be visible in daylight. I stuck strips of 3 on the bottom of the arms of my blackout blue in front red in back. much better for orientation then the built in leds, and very easy to wire up, especially on the BO
When i first started ordering from banggood, it was incredibly slow. When i tracked the orders it seems to start somewhere in the middle of china, and goes by truck to either hongkong or somewhere further east. A bit later i found out about aliexpress and started ordering from them instead.
Recently tho, i ordered a couple of things from banggood, just minor parts and tools, and used free shipping. Imagine my surprise when both times, they arrived faster than EMS from hobbyking (And this close to Christmas!). They must have done something recently to improve their system. I may end up ordering from them again.
Thx Bruce ordered some. My tuppence worth on BG, used them on off over year generally been very good with the Quadcopter gear I've ordered, 2-3 weeks to deliver to the UK and no duds to date. But my Mobius order did take 9 weeks with a bit of CS tennis thrown in and several items recently have been disappointingly cancelled after ordering, but overall give them 7/10 . Patience a requirement for sure
Been buying from BG for a while now with no problems at all. Takes the same time to deliver as Hobbyking does. At least to this corner of the world. Last order where a couple of sunnysky's 2212 980kv. Took 3 weeks to get here. Motors where well packed. Bought a total of 8 from them with no drizles.
I would recomend them.
Thanks for the review, very much enjoy your vids :)
Just saw the ad for the Turnigy i10 radio...looks like an attempt to compete with the Taranis...will you be doing a review, Bruce?
You can get the strip from bang good too. I think it is a waterproof version and they have different sizes. Eg. 5050 and 3248 (ish)
Get 'em to send you the free stuff as well. Nothing like a comparison, and as a bonus, IT'S FREE!!! :-) Hard to see the difference between the LED's on camera, but happy to take your word on it. Use the hobbyking white, red and green myself, just don't trust the output of blue LED's and had great result with the 3 colours I chose. If it ain't broke... :-)
Merry Christmas, Bruce. Hope you, your wife, and you family have a fantastic silly season and beyond. Enjoy!
CREE LEDs are pretty bright too , don't know if they are brighter than COB ones you mentioned .
They are certainly much brighter than these two new fellows I have working for me at the moment !
Does anybody know which LED types these are and if they can be unsoldered and replaced with white LEDs of equal brightness. Alternatively a white LED strip of equal brightness and equal width will do.
How do you think these would work as grow lights if someone put a tonne of them together?
I’ve made my own from a spool of RGB LEDs. Then I just wire to the appropriate terminal(s) for the color I want to produce; red, green, blue and all three for white. So for less that $10 you can make about 100 5cm strips into any of 7 different colors.
Hi bruce, not sure if it was an optical illusion or not but when you initially upped the voltage on the first white test the solder pad on the positive connection appeared to revert to its molten state. Its not a lot of current i grant you but i just wondered if you have checked the pads while the LED's are illuminated. have you had any issues will desoldering? Fancy a few of these for my own.
ignore me bruce, just being a silly pom, on closer inspection it was your reflection in the joint giving it the molten effect, kudos on your soldering :-)
I do like banggood. They are cheap as beans. However I don't expect orders to come any sooner than 4 weeks from the UK and others have mentioned. Once I bought a h107d in April and it turned up middle of august. Be prepared to wait. Customer service is good though although iv had a lot of faulty products off them
Funny how now u want to stress the fact that u finally spent a few bucks on something. Someone give this guy a treat.
5500K xenon or warm white/daylight is the most easy to see with. 3528 does about 6-8 lumens per led 5630 does about 45-50 lumens
Nice review
Considering the banggood lights have a semi white covering on them I think they are doing great
Hello bruce thank you for your video, i would use your help if you compare the HKpilot mega 2.8 and the banggood version of apm 2.8 bcause the banggood one is cheaper thank you
Greetings from algeria
What about providing power from 4s battery?
@Bruce
is the solder melting or what is that crazy liquid looking of the + solöder point at around 2:55-3:00 possible?! flux?
btw. most important thing for me would be if they could handle 4s just like the qav or blackout PDB LEDs. they get blinding bright but work like a charm!
it's just his reflection through the solder
I thought so too but the camera isnt moving, the leds arent, there are so other light sourced moving. so it MUST be something moving on the solder, possibly it just gets warm and the flux starts to get more liquid.
who knows, if they start to get warm after such a short time on 3s they will fry on 4s pretty fast I think...
do you solder these directly to your pd board ?
Thanks for the review Bruce, excellent as always. Can i suggest an idea for review. I fly the JR-XG8 and have had no luck finding a mini quad... or any multirotor for that matter until just recently ive noticed there two new kinds of compatible multirotor's on the market. One uses the trainer output into a 2.4MHZ module, and the other uses a DMSS receiver chip and i have no idea which way to go. A comparison of DMSS compatible multirotor's would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks again for your efforts to educate in the hobby without ever neglecting the fun that can be had, and i always look forward to your uploads.
Bruce, you would be a sick santa lol.
I like banggood so far. I have ordered porobably 30+ things and most come quickly. I noticed when I order 5030 props they only take like 10 days to us but other biger items take longer. Some items are tracked and others are not. I am currently waiting on a 4" screen i got on sale for $12 and it has been almost a month along with one esc. One part I ordered at the same time has arrived, an rp sma adapter. As long as you are not in a hurry I think you are ok with them.
Different colors of LEDs have different voltage potentials at their respective p-n junctions. Brightness isn't a fair comparison unless you put them all at their optimal voltage...unless the supplier is claiming them all to have the same optimal voltage...Google "p-n junction"
Hi Bruce, No light meter? if you have a stills camera put the LEDs behind a sheet of white paper, set the camera to aperture priority, press the shutter half way and look at the shutters speed (don't get too close), the higher the shutter speed the brighter the light. Rough and ready but better than the naked eye perhaps. Cheers
It might be helpful to compare white with white, ect. My experience with Banggood has been mixed. One gimbal board quickly burned out. The $35 dollar replacement board worked well. The board camera I ordered from them works well, but the recommended camera housing was the wrong one. I keep getting their email specials, but I will likely consider other vendors first.
I have ordered tons of stuff from banggood and no problems at all. Key thing is always pay the 1.6 dollar extra for tracking, china to uk delivery has always been less than 2 weeks for me that way. Actually one order did get lost in post, but after 6 weeks they sent another for me. Then week later the original turned up lol so got two for price of one. Cost for me to post back the free item would be too high with uk post costs lol
thanks for that review very helpful, just a tip can you also let us know the price of the things your comparing it too? eg how much was the hobby king one? NOT $1.70 was $2.40
watched it twice just to make sure i didnt miss you saying how much the hobbyking one coasts
BTW those led's are supposed to not be blinding, it saves battery power and allows you to look directly at your model
Why would you watch it at arm's length?
green looks always brighter (at same power) because its just the color that the human eye can see the best.
Use Banggood a lot, surprised they were not foam wrapped.
They now have UK/EU warehouse so shipping even faster 3-4 days but price can be bit more
Every item i get is packaged in a lot of foam.
postage same as HK.
As for LED buy the full roll, they are about 5 euro for 5m long of many colours
I use gangbang as my first supplier all the time since they sent me a new Mobius when the one I had was not recognized by the USB port. They let me keep the old one so I purchased a new PCB from them and have two now....
Free shipping and the prices are in AUD...works for me....
Banggood is pretty sweet I've had good luck ordering keycaps for my mechanical keyboard from them, typical Chinese supplier caveats though, sometimes my orders take up to a month to arrive, but heh I'm in no hurry for toys.
Hmmm Bruce, regarding the EMS tracking number... I myself have placed over 10+ orders from Banggood over the past few months. I've used the EMS option thrice and I've got the same problem as you 3 out of 3 times. But my package still arrives at my doorstep in Singapore exactly 7 days(3 out of 3 times) after being marked as shipped, and the EMS packages for me are handled by toll express
Father Xmas with LED dreadlocks in his beard. Green like the elves.
How much it takes to arrive USA
White LEDs will be more efficient and brighter because they use phosphors to output the mix of RGB that we see as white.
Bruce, perhaps you could use a smart phone light meter app to get some numbers.
You can't compare led's of differing colours and draw conclusions regarding their efficiency based on their apparent brightness and current consumption. Those blue led's were quite possibly the most efficient of the bunch, they were just not the ones your eyes register as the brightest ; )
Could it be that the light is diffused/spread out so it just looks dimmer than a more focused beam ?? Still, only US27c each. You really cant buy much of anything for $1.66 in NZ .
Thanks 4 the video.
What is the luminosity?
thumbs up for banggood.com - i have had over 50 orders so far, and no problems so far...
My only experience with Banggood was when I tried to buy some sunnysky motors for a cinetank. Before I placed my order they were said to have been in stock but as soon as I ordered them the order said back ordered. I waited about 2 weeks without getting a shipping conformation so I emailed their customer support. They told me that the motors would be in stock the next week, but a week passed and they were still back ordered. This happened several more times until I canceled my order after about two months of them leading me on. It was really disappointing and I just ended up buying t-motors anyways. I personally will not buy from banggood again. Just thought I would let the community know about my experience.
I am very satisfied with Banggood as well.
I had about 50 orders with them so far and all went well. Some took up to 6 weeks to arrive, some were here in 2 weeks - independent from the warehouse (uk or one of the 3-4 chinese warehouses they seem to have) I used.
However, to be fair: ordering from UK means zero customs issue here in Europe, which can not be always said for the chinese orders.
Concerning the LED strips, I agree with the previous comments, that at least part of the issue is due to the luminous sensitivity, where during daytime (=color vision) green appears approx. 5x brighter than blue at the same intensity. For everybody interessted you can look it up here : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candela
Otherwise very good review as always ! Thank you and a merry christmas Bruce !
I have had good experiences with Banggood. Another Chinese company that is virtually the same and also good is Dx extreme or dx.com
Bruce check out edo LED lighting on eBay. I buy all my strips from them. You can get 5 metres of very bright LED strips for less than $20 AUD
of the leds have you tested them for rf interference, have heard that some do
Alejandro Alvarez the electronics certainly can. LED's generally operate on a frequency not always on.since it's not effective or necessary, which is why when you're behind a car with LED rear light, and you change your view rapidly, you don't get a streak of red across your vision, but a line of dots. This is also how LED's generally change intensity. Simple RC LED's may be always on though, which is why they also draw a lot more power than necessary, unless you put them on a brushed speed controller.
As our eyes are more receptive to the green part of the light spectrum, the green LEDs would look more intense.
The only thing I've bought from banggood was a flybarless helicopter controller, first one got stuck in shenzhen, they sent another out for free, then came in a few days. Anyone who orders from China and expects it quick doesn't know the postal service!
Sorry for saying, but the hobby king white ones totally suck, they even get pale when compared side by side with the banggood ones.... O.o
***** I don't understand how you got that parcel so fast. Things I order to Australia from Hong Kong / China take at least 3 - 4 weeks. I recently ordered a chef's knife from alibaba and that took over 6 weeks to arrive (free shipping). I have no idea why it takes so long, do you?
They must have been on sale or they raised the price as soon as the sales volume picked up. That may even be done automatically. They're US$3.99 each now.
They might have been out of stock at the CN warehouse then and defaulted to the US warehouse. They're $3.99 at the US warehouse and $1.90 from the CN warehouse.
I boought an rc car from banggood. waited 6 months (i gave up already). they did came after 6 months the next day i tried my rc car out and
it broke :(
OMG YOU DID A UNBAGGING!
so its now a FPV, Racer, Mini Quad, nightship.
FRMQN for short... what is the next letter
Heard a lot of bad comments and reviews about there delivery service.
Or you can just get a whole roll of 5m long led strips for 5$, and for brighter ones you can get 10$ including shipping on ebay, you can also cut them on every 3 led. and i am pretty sure you didnt get those with shipping for under 10 cents... you got ripped off
Those 'blue' ones seem to be more violet and our eyes dont see 400nm light as 'bright' as 6500k, That said if you are flying in the rain you'll be able to see the blues much better ;)
I like banggood. I have bought lots from them and the more I buy the faster I seem to get my orders..
I thought it did pretty good considering it's size.
Buy 5050 60LED/m LED strip of ebay instead. Insane amounts of light output, and you get 5 meters (16 ft) for roughly $10, and you can get them waterproof.
You are right, the Double Density 5050 LEDs are "hurt your eyes if you stare at them" bright!!!
Yes Bruce what I second what Thullen said and if you go for the standard size LED's (same as the HK strips) you can get 5m rolls for $5 and they aren't too bright at night
There are good reports about with regards to Banggood service but their prices are hiked, these LED;s you are reviewing are £2.61, that's $4.07 US each !
RIDERZcouk I only paid US$1.66 each -- because I bought six and got them from the Chinese warehouse.
*****
still quite expensive imo, the only reason I see using these is if the screw holes in them line up with the spacing between the mounting holes for the frame spacers on the ZMR250-frame, making a clean installation, otherwise I can not justify the price of them, even if they are US$1.66 ea. Bruce, could you perhaps show if these strips actually do fit bolt on to the ZMR250-frame as the add on banggood more or less claims?
***** I'm going to fit them to a ZMR and a QAV then get some aerial footage so the practical brightness can be better judged. I also have my own "uber bright" LEDs (3x1W) that I'll be fitting to one of my miniquads for a comparison :-)
If the tracking ends with SE, be prepared to wait for 2+ months for the item to arrive from them... My experience that is...
FarHar72 No, the registered mail was Chinapost and the EMS is via Singapore Post.
Agreed. My experience is anything with lipos in it will be shipped from Sweden because God knows why.
***** Because Swiss Post is probably one of the very few postal carriers who are prepared to ship lipos (or who don't actually check what's in the boxes). Everyone else has imposed very strict controls over the shipping of batteries.
***** what does Swiss(Switzerland) have to do with Sweden...
Not sure how you were able to get them for $1.66 US but site now shows $3.99 US
Hung Sewell I just checked and it says $1.90 for a single unit -- check that it actually is in US dollars and not some other currency because if I'm not logged in, I get the Canadian dollar price. I note that they have sold out though (damn, the RCModelReviews effect strikes again ;-)
***** oh nevermind, you have to have CN warehouse selected instead of US warehouse
Banggood is actually a clearing house of many chinese factories, so user experiences may differ greatly.
I have never had a complaint with banggood and that's with 20+ orders. They are even stocking lipo's and other rc hobby related parts. If they sold the same things as HK I would never place an order with HK ever again
“Very competitive with the likes of hobbyking” sees the hobbyking cutting mat...
I've been waiting over two months for my order from Banggood. Will never shop there again
GBBWSA pay for shipping if you don't wanna wait and stop being a complaining tight ass
They probably had your name in the computer so when you ordered it was flagged therefore they new to do an exceptional job...lol
Sorry i meant 2.7 version
G'day Bruce,
Well, I dunno much about it, but didn't some highbrowed Boffins get an entire Nobel Prize just for figuring out how to build a Blue LED...(?) ; I'm sure I recall the double backflip celebratory somersaults about that feat being discussed in New Scientist, maybe 15 years ago...
It's apparently so much more difficult to get them there Blue Shinyshiny things, than in any other colour (ask any Bowerbird...), that maybe it's a bit like the Dancing Bear principle...; it doesn't much matter how well the Bear dances, how high it lifts it's feet, or how well it keeps to the beat of the music, the amazing thing is that it dances at all (who cares how bright the Blue LED shines, we're supposed to be deleriously happy that it's BLUE and it SHINES At All..!).
You don't need to apologise for the beard, mate, if it wasn't Natural then it wouldn't grow there...; and apparently 'tis said that a bearded man cannot ever even remotely possibly tell a "Barefaced Lie"..., so, just(ifiably) think of it as a mark of good character...
;-p
Ciao !
you may be thinking of blue laser.
RCKnut
Possibly, I dunno much about how LEDs work, but a LASERS' colour is pretty much dependant on what is being excited to emit the Photons, I seem to recall...; to be honest I don't really grasp Electronics, so I'm often wrong about it.
Most of my own closest approaches to actual innovation or invention are at the level of rearranging existing off-the-shelf components to do stuff that nobody had thought to use them for... (search "The SunFoil Project..." to see the best example of that).
;-p
Ciao !
WarblesOnALot No your not because I remember that article as well. www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-29518521
seibernator
G'day, thanks for that...; maybe my forgettery isn't quite as riddled with holes as I'd thought...
;-p
Ciao !
WarblesOnALot Nope. you was dead on.. With computer monitors (and TV's) using RGB (red green blue) it was very disappointing after many years of trying not to have a working blue LED. I should also point out that LED's work just like lasers. (only with LED's they excite the material with electrons and not photons) As you mentioned the color you get just depends on what material you force the photon out of..
Bruce, if you want truly blinding (they left spots in front of my eyes for about 10 minutes) then check these out:
www.banggood.com/5_5W-56led-COB-LED-Chip-450mA-WhiteWarm-White-For-DIY-DC-12V-p-959057.html
There are various other sizes if you search for 'COB LED', unfortunately only in white and a filter/ painting them doesn't seem to work out too well.
chris crute Yes, COB LEDs can be incredibly bright (I have 10W and 100W ones here that are downright dangerous :-).The problem with going too high in power is that you end up with lots of heat to dissipate -- or your LEDs start to fry.I guess the main benefit of these boards is that they are actually fiberglass PCB material with holes drilled which means, in the case of a multirotor, you can cable-tie or bolt them to the frame.
Yes, Great ! But ... do they bend ? (not "blend" ;) )
Banggood needs to improve on their packing, right Bruce?
Well.. I only wanted 6 the same 30A slim opto spider esc's. Now I have finally have them! And 1 20A, and 3 30A opto normal.. O and BTW one 30A slim seems to have only 2 phases.. The first email they reply, but that's all.. Banggood is cheap! And they ship pretty fast and free! But the service SUCKS! Hobbyking on the other hand(70+ orders) has great service in my opinion! But the shipping sometimes.. Duh.. Moral of the story, nothing is perfect. (Except your wife of course!)
I see you bashing Chinese products in one video, and see you order stuff from Banggood in this one.
Where do you think these come frome Bruce?
You should`ve tested them on 4s.
I run these on 4s
banggood are too variable on shipping and item quality
I placed an order with bang good a year ago after watching a review by a you tuber. I wouldn't order from them again. Bit of advice. When. You have a problem and they start ignoring your email, open a PayPal dispute right away. And hey presto, bang good will refund you directly and ask for the dispute to be closed.
Bruce watch what you review, they will take your reviews and use them on their website.
Note, they will first of all ask if it's possible to have whatever you've bought repaired locally, and they will refund you, then they will offer you banggood points. After those two options they will ignore your emails.
They are $3.99 now....
Oh, thats from the UK store... Sorry.
Buying them like that is a rip off and the strips are lighter n come in waterproof options + uv LEDs won't blind you and that color variant is power hungry no matter where you buy them ...yes, the color does make a difference and so does the resistor value. Learn more before talking out your wind pipe about crap. Each color will also have a data sheet recommended voltage per color. There's a lot more to LEDs than you apparently know and represent here.
Not a fan of BangGood.
