It's also why you should watch those movies first. Those movies become less scary(also spoilers) after watching Scary Movie spoof specific scenes. Also Scary Movie is more funny after watching Scream/IKWYDS knowing what scenes their spoofing.

The guy climbing through the window was James Van Der Beek - the main star of the popular teen drama television series "Dawsons Creek" back in the day. One of the heartthrob during the late 90' early 00's.

I went and seen this at the movies when it came out. It was one of the best theatre experiences I’ve ever had. We were all on the floor crying! It’s definitely a product of it’s time, it was a new millennium and it played on all those 90s slasher movies that came out a few years prior. You definitely couldn’t get away with making a movie like this nowadays. The jokes would offend everyone, but back then it was all good fun and made everyone laugh. Nobody took it serious or personal.

Watch Scary Movie 2 (2001) but after that, the quality goes down for the rest of the sequels as well as other spoof attempts by other film makers. But to help you understand the origins, here are the OG comedy spoofs that Scary Movie takes its inspiration from:

This parodied a bunch of horror movies as well as The Matrix (the hanging in the air kick part), the Usual Suspects.
There's a few in this series plus Not Another Teen Movie, Dance Movie or if you want old school you could try Airplane, the Naked Gun series, Spaceballs or Hot Shots.

The character Buffy was named that because the character she’s inspired by from IKWYDLS is portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar who’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I was 22 when this came out - and I still find it hilarious - number 2 is even better.
The guy in the window was a character named Dawson on a popular show, called Dawsons Creek back in the 90s and he always climbed into the window of his female best friend. The song that was playing when he did it was the same song. That’s why it was funny when he popped up and said wrong set. This movie spoofed 90’s slasher movies like scream, I know what you did last Summer and other movies similar to that.
I have watched this reaction more than once. Thanks for the laughs. My mom has breast cancer so this is such an uplifting reaction during these difficult times.

Fun Fact: "Scary Movie" was the working title of Scream (1996), the main movie parodied.
Some Closer Fact: The Wayans Bros. (1995) is actually getting its long awaited final episode called Long Vacation (2023) and it comes out July 30, 2023.
Casting Notes Fact: Jared Leto was offered to play Bobby during the early stages of casting. He eventually declined, in favor of doing Requiem For A Dream (2000), which also starred Scary Movie (2000) writer/actor Marlon Wayans.
What Script Fact: Despite the screenplay credits for Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, little if anything from their screenplay was used. Marlon Wayans in particular has said that he and most of the other writers responsible for the final script never even read Seltzer and Friedberg's draft, after Keenen Ivory Wayans checked it over and assured them that it contained nothing worth retaining in their version.
Deep Cut Fact: The "Whassup" scene is a parody of a Budweiser's "True" 1999 commercial. The commercial became an inspiration for other Budweiser commercials using the "Whassup" catchphrase up till the year 2002. Van Der Beek appears at the window early in the movie and I Don't Want To Wait (1997) by Paula Cole plays in the background, which is the theme to Dawson's Creek (1998) which stars James Van Der Beek.
That's Hot Fact: Shannon Elizabeth said the director wanted to achieve a push-up look with her boobs so they kept making her wear tighter tops and bras that pushed them out as far as possible. But when the director wanted to add padding, she just turned around and said "Hey, do I look like the kind of girl who needs extra padding?" and the entire set just burst out laughing. So finally it's just her own healthy breasts that you see in the movie.

James Van Der Beek was the lead actor on Dawson’s Creak, a 90’s teen show. He would pop in the window of Joey Potter (played by actress, Katie Holmes). She also climbs in his bedroom window all the time. In the movie Scream, Billy (Sidney‘s boyfriend/killer) played by Skeet Ulrich, would also climb in his girlfriend’s window.

I forgot how funny this movie was! OMG I am over here in tears from laughing so hard and what makes it even funnier is that I am a 90's kid and I was watching this when I was in high school...lol! My parents didn't give a sh!t that I was watching it. So seeing you two watch it is hilarious. Parents were so much more relaxed in the 90's. People in general were more relaxed about a lot of things. Nobody was offended easily at all. You would never get canceled in the 90's for stupid sh!t. I would suggest going back and watching Scream, I know what you last summer, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Halloween, Blair witch project, The Matrix, The Usual Suspects, Friday the 13th, and the Shining just to name a few of the movies that scary movie used for satire. This list is just for Scary Movie 1. The plot is based loosely off of scream and I know what you did last summer, so you should at least watch those. Trust me it will make it 100 times funnier.
