Dragonhunter
By Richard Meyer
Item: 00-20797
Series: Highland/Etling String Explorer
Category: String Orchestra
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
Level: 1
Using only the notes of the D major scale, Richard Meyer has fashioned a medieval-sounding piece that is sure to fascinate your beginning string students. The minor key, modal harmonies and driving rhythms give this piece a very mature sound. The aggressive main theme is introduced by violins and violas, with cello and bass in counterpoint. The theme later returns in canon, with cellos and basses being chased (hunted) by the violins and violas. Very dramatic from start to finish! (2:51) This title is available in SmartMusic.

This is a piece that no orchestra can skip. If your orchestra hasn’t played this piece then it isn’t a real orchestra. No orchestra can skip this piece. It doesn’t count as an orchestra if you haven’t played this before.
My orchestra played this
@@timothyblancada4325 me too!
Fr because I’m in 6th grade and we are already learning it and I’m like one of the advanced ones so I’m and here trying to get the whole song not only half of it
fr, i loved playing this in 6th grade and i still love this piece to this day
Bruh
we played this piece in 6th grade and now it’s a tradition in our orchestra because we loved it so much! every year the beginning class plays this piece for the spring concert
I played this, same darn piece for all my years of playing cello, like canon in D...
It’s a tradition for the 6th grade for our school to. Reason was because the 6th grade do this midevil fair and the orchestra got to play this song for it. Which for the concert the 6th graders also play this for spring as well. Now my brother is playing it!
Oh my gosh! My orchestra is playing this right now! It’s awesome!
Same
Same :D
When playing this song in a big orchestra you can feel it's power
Thats true, that is very much true
We have 40 kids in our orchestra and our conductor has us playing very loud and fierce and you can just feel the power, we have our concert tomorrow (Im the Concertmaster the the 7th grade orchestra) and we love this piece even though we are used to playing more challenging pieces.
Yes❤
I swear, when the basses and cellos play the main part a measure before the rest of the orchestra, it makes you feel like your leading the charge
FR
exactly!
This song is so much better then I thought. I’m in orchestra and we are doing it for our spring concert. It hasn’t been real orchestra if you haven’t played this song.
I’ve gone from playing this, to now playing the Violin 1 solo for The Emerald Falcon. Richard Meyer is the best
I remember playing this in 6th grade, this was a pretty fun piece.
Me too!
So did my Friend Angel
Playing this piece in my orchestra, love it!
Micah_ TC me too
Micah_ TC same its the best song we’ve played in my opinion
same
I played it for sight reading
Same
The 6th grade orchestra at my school has played this piece every year for like 5 years and it’s amazing
Man I remember playing this and I played the cello I swear I put so much motion and expression into this song with I played .. I broke like 4 bow strings 😂😭
I'm playing rn and I do the same 😂😭
🤣🤣🤣
@@TtvGreyDracoKing 😳
I play cello to and am playing this song :)
Violinist here, don't your strings only break when tuning?
I just started playing this song on 5th grade semester 2. This is by far my fav song. 😄😁
This was my first richard meyer piece as a viola and it was amazing! So far, I've played the following songs made by him in order:
Dragonhunter
Ninja
Starfleet
Terra Nova (which is by far the BEST!!!)
Same!
Just not the other songs
Richard Meyer has some good lower level pieces, but where his REALLY good stuff is is in the higher levels like 3 and 4. Incantations (4), The Emerald Falcon (4), Subterranean Dialogues (4), Mantras (3), The Elements (4), Swamp Thang (4), and Minotaur (4) are all really good high level pieces. As a fellow violist I can say these all represent the Viola pretty well
Moonstone by Yukiko Nishimura is another epic piece
We played this song in our winter concert! It was amazing!!
Our chamber orch played it when i was in 6th. Now a new conductor and now we are playing grade 3. Old conductor would be so proud.
I see a lot of comments about playing this in 6th grade, I'm currently in 6th grade and learning this.
Cool. I'm abt to be in 10th and i love this piece and its legit the easiest thing now💀💀💀
I'm in seventh learning to play it on viola
Same 6th on viola
lol ig ur in 10th grade now. time flies pretty quick!
Me suffering in class trying to play this: 😭
My friend: ✨
i feel ya, im one of only 5 cellos at my school so im strugglin 😭
@@sledgehammer_floatzel At least I have more cello players and I feel bad for you.
@SSSB365 The other cellists at my school dont even like me cause they think I "dont play" (i literally do more than them, theyre so cocky though) and most of the time, im with the group that doesn't even have a cello other than me so i'm just abt fightin fo my life haha :,D. hinestly in my experience its easier being the only cello plus the instructor on cello too
@@sledgehammer_floatzel wow
@@sledgehammer_floatzel There's only 3 cellos in my class
I did this piece at my 5th grade orchestra concert. I'm in 9th grade now

We played this in sixth grade and this is so nostalgic! I can imagine myself playing the cello part again 😭
I play viola. We only have one bass in our class, and i guess it's every other day, because he's also the only trumpet in band (which I'm also in). We're learning to play this song for i think the spring concert, and in in seventh grade. A lot of comments day they were in 6th it 5th grade, but I'm in seventh. This is such a cool piece!!

This is the first piece I ever played with an orchestra, that was about eight years ago now. I just thought of it randomly and showed up here.
I’m playing this this year in the spring! It’s such a nice song
I can’t believe that nearly 16 years after I first learned this in elementary school orchestra, I still remember the tune and the name just popped into my head. I wish my teacher had been nicer to us in middle school. I might still be playing.
I’m playing this in orchestra. It’s really good!!
I played this on violin
i see everyone talking about playing this in 6th or 5th grade but i only found it because a friend who was in orchestra recommended it to me a few years ago
I remember playing this song in 6th grade Ahhhhh 😍
I remember playing this when I was about 14 or 15 in the middle school, 8th grade. I was upright bass. Fast forward 10 years, I am gonna be 25 and I miss playing an upright so much.
I play viola. We only have one bass in our class, and i guess it's every other day, because he's also the only trumpet in band (which I'm also in). how do you just cut out the best part of the song!? We played this last year (7th grade) in orchestra and we loved that part
@@khi- for us, no one had mastered it or even bothered trying when we rehearsed it. So the teacher cut it out. It annoyed me cause I memorized the whole thing and was first chair

In our school we start in fifth grade, and don't get a chance to learn an instrument until then (when starting the school) ur so lucky, lol... We're learning this in seventh grade
Nice
This is a richard meyer classic
gforce better
@@herissmon9878 what
love
Same we also play this
I played this in 7th grade :D (I'm in 9th grade now :3)
We played this song today
This is actually kind of harmonically confusing to analyze (which is not necessarily a bad thing). The key signature says D major/B minor, and I assume it's D major for most of the piece except it transposes to B minor for a section, and meanwhile the actual main melody seems like it's actually in E minor! Literal Incantations was easier to analyze than this (still not a bad thing)
IKR
i remember playing this in 5th grade.
all hail richard meyer our lord
If you’re orchestra hasn’t played this it’s not a real orchestra i LOVEEEE this one
