Homemade Fishing Pole Challenge! Can I Turn This Stick Into a Fish?

As a kid, I remember making a fishing pole out of river cane and catching fish with it, but that was many years ago at a fish farm, and I'm not sure It'll work... To make things more challenging, after I make the pole, I'll be fishing at a heavily pressured pond, and it's winter, so the fish may not be cooperative.
If I don't catch a fish today, I have to take a swim in one of our freezing cold ponds that was just covered in ice this morning.
However, I do have one thing going for me: this pond was stocked with trout a couple of months ago.
