Rocket League Freestyling Is About To Change Forever

- Recently, a large amount of Rocket League freestylers were banned from playing Rocket League for 30 days. At first, everyone was confused. Why would Psyonix suddenly start banning an extremely active community that's been around since the game's release?

Psyonix banned the activity of an entire community in Rocket League. Freestyling is going to have to change entirely. There are a lot of players that don't understand the full story or the reason why this is such a big deal. Lots of people think that Psyonix is totally in the wrong or that Rocket League freestylers are these malicious and selfish players out to get everyone. In reality, no one is perfectly innocent in the situation. In this video, I explain the arguments both sides are making and why it's really just an unfortunate situation that had to be handled by Psyonix eventually. It just could have been done in a much better way.

I find it ironic how most freestylers say bullying bronzes will help said bronzes improving yet don’t play at their own rank because they get bullied when they try to freestyle

Personally I loved getting freestyled on back when I started in 2015/16 (Granted it was mostly spinny aerials at the time lol) but imo its the same thing as how squishy viewed getting smurfed on, its a good learning experience. (Personally idc about this whole casual ban thing because I only play comp)
From a somewhat new perspective. I tried learning this game with my boyfriend so we had something to do together but after about 15 minutes and having seen people pirouetting in the sky i felt useless and realised i just wont ever be good enough to do that (dont have masses of hours to put in the game)
Makes me wonder why they didn't create a new gamemode based on freestyling. One at a time players would hit shots and then you and the other players in the match would rate the shot (kind of like build battles in Minecraft if that makes sense). Would be cool IMO
people wouldn't queue in other playlists as much and freestylers dont want to be put against other freestylers
@@itsquadrus People would still que other playlists? I think you don't mean the comp playlist cuz people will still que for that. Freestylers are outnumbered like at the very least 1 to 10 against comp players. If all the freestylers went to that new gamemode, you wouldn't even see a difference. If you mean the extra's playlist, well those are mostly made up of low ranked players who just wanna have fun and try things out and they don't have mechanics so they would still stay there. Also I don't think freestylers care who they're up against as long as they get to hit their clips and no one early challenges them.
That would be a great solution, and I don't know why Psyonix hadn't thought of that.
People that queue casual want their clips to feel “real” regardless of the skill level of their opponents
@@itsquadrus freestylers dont want to play against other freestylers, against people who have their levels. Dont want to play in private match , dont want to play against bot.
COME ON LMAO so the only option is to bully bronze players ?
We need a free styling playlist where people can actually freestyle without disrupting everyone else
Just make a custom match at this point and freestyle in there
The playlist is called "Private Match".

I was wondering this too. I'm low rank but wouldn't mind trying to play against a freestyler just to learn how to defend those shots.
so glad they did this. i remember when i was new and i was still trying to level up so i could play competitive and i just kept getting destroyed by 2 freestylers. like bro if ur not even trying to play against someone just open a private match.
After seeing the pov of the "noobs" I totally understood what psyonix was after, and totally agree that they should've handled it better.
Only thing I don't understand is they went after casual while still letting smurfs play in ranked.. makes 0 sense
@@Funnykid26 That’s what the report button is there for.

There's now a matchmaking ban in casual for leaving matches. So, while they CAN leave a match if they want, they shouldn't be forced to.
Exactly I hate having to leave cause of freestyles smurfing and then getting a whole 1 or 2 hour ban
@@Antwuantheone LITTERALLY plus before fortnite epic games took over rocket league or bought it? @@Antwuantheone There's no way in hell you run into SO many freestylers that you get a two hour ban. That's like...abandoning 30 matches in a row or something. Stop lying.
Smurfing has been a growing problem for RL and I'm glad they are combating it. Agree 1month out of the blue seems too harsh should probably have been a week so people realise they're serious and then give them a grace period to get up to a more reasonable mmr
Yea, I agree with the shorter ban. It couldve ar least sent a small warning ban for like some hours to a day like a normal ban mentioning that dropping on purpose is not allowed in casual or something
The game should not have been free to play. because too many players make smurf accounts over and over. Also some players who intentionally harrass and provoke other players may get a ban and then just create a new account for free. Creating new accounts should be expensive enough to combat this abuse. And then toxic players who just leave in the middle of games should get at least an hour long ban. 5-15 minute bans or what ever it is, is no ban at all. just go grab a snack, take a shit and then go back to playing.
@@FreeDooMusic And voting to forfeit should be based on majority rule.
@@kvasir8931 well i can't say i disagree with that apart from when both teammates vote forfeit but we end up winning anyway. Toxic players has a way of dragging your progress down. When my team mates in either 3s or 2s foreit early. ill do one more try and then vote forfeit too.
@@kvasir8931 nah you can't stop someone playing the game they want to play because other people do. If you can't commit 5 minutes of your time to the game YOU CHOSE to queue then leave early and take your penalty

There obviously exists a large community that cares deeply about freestyling, but players who just want to play the game get frustrated because it really does suck to not even be able to touch the ball. In my opinion, the best way to fix this situation would be for Psyonix to implement a new category entirely for the freestylers. We'd have Ranked and Casual still, but have another menu option, like extras mode, specifically to go to for "100% willing participation." We'll call it something wild like "Freestyle" and nobody winds up there who doesn't want to freestyle, problem solved.
Sounds like a private match with extra steps to me. All it would take is some function to verify non-altered settings - given by Psyonix.
Freestylers wouldn't play here because they wouldn't be able to shit on less capable players
Should have read before I posted... 100% agree
That requires psyonix managers to have actual brains, which eithout an explicit petition likely won't happen. Seriously just look at how they destroyed the game when they introduced bans in casual. Got a bad teammate who own goals and want out of the game? Sorry, you're out of luck. You get 5 consecutive teammates like this? Sorry enjoy your 2 hour long ban without being able to play normally for 5 minutes. Stupidest decision ever. You can't even put the controller down and wait it out you just have to constantly keep pressing gas and watch how you get scored on hoping that the opponents get bored and one of them leaves so you can quickly sneak out of the match without punishment. Whoever made that was an idiot. Bans for leaving are okay in ranked but definitely not casual. Sorry I just had to get my frustration out. It's stupid
the difference now is that leaving a casual match gets you punished, so you can't just leave against a party of freestylers
yeah its really crazy. You can even get banned for leaving your casual game of 1s. Shits dumb
That works the other way too. We can’t leave the match to go freestyle in a different lobby of “non consenting opponents” because apparently we need permission or some stupid stuff according to Psyonix.
@@RealCookieOG_ i think its fine as long as you dont intentionally lose a game, just like Pulse Fire
@@RealCookieOG_ Then go freestyle with your freestyle friends in private lobbies? I don't understand at all why you have to do it in public lobbies. (except you have no friends, then that's just sad. But I don't believe it, cuz freestylers have freestyle friends.)
@@Yoshi92 they literally explained that it ruins it because things can be faked lmao
i remember reading somewhere that psyonix should add a freestyle playlist, similar to the extra modes. that will guarantee 100% willing participants, bc you know exactly what you’re getting into before starting a match
trolls just join, it wont work
@@Jigsaw2533 that’s fair but they can be reported for match griefing, since they’re supposed to be freestyling
They wouldnt use it , they want to clip on low lvls and act like they did something , also why they don't play against thier rank or other freestyle players
"When I play a bronze they get better, but when I play someone better than me, that's not fair" - 🤓
I totally missed this topic and the fact that freestylers did this for years to me is just mindblowing. Tbh they can be happy for just missing out for a month. Intentionally loosing games just says it all... it's wrong, no matter how you turn it. If you wanna freestyle go ahead, i think it's an awesome skill to have and as Wayton said those montages are amazing and helpful to the community but not at the cost of new players. I am totally on board with Psyonic here and if they wanna freestyle go private. It's their own fault for missusing the casual playlist for it. If they just played for fun at freestyling no matter the match outcome and no intentionally loosing i guarantee nothing would have happened. It's L for the freestylers yes but caused by themself as they did many times in the casual playlist. Karma always gets you.
Sure it's wrong, but freestylers have been doing this for years. Psyonix should have at least warned that it would be a bannable offense, or at least put it in the tos before banning a bunch of people for a full month.
It’s on fucking casual
@@thunderbot5708 The warning is clearly spelled out in the TOS.
@@thunderbot5708 they know they’re manipulating the system to play vastly lower ranked players which is cheating plain and simple. So I can’t agree with this.
@@whatgoesup9857 I agree that throwing matches to face easier opponents is and should be wrong, but it still doesn't justify psyonix's conduct. One month out of the blue? They could have achieved the same thing by banning people much less time. The people who got banned didn't even know WHY it was happening. There is no excuse for not communicating it more clearly before. It's in the ToS but that still isn't a good enough reason to be more clear about their intentions.
It's not that I don't think they have the right to ban people for a month out of nowhere. I know they absolutely have that right, I just don't think that was their best move to achieve what they want to achieve.
Big W from rocket league personally me and my friend lost interest in the game cause of not being able to do anything while playing there are ALOT of smurfs in casual and not only, this had to be done
yup, most of my mates quit for the exact same reason. It sucks because the game is brilliant but the player base... not so much.
A few details that Wayton missed :
1. The freestylers who got a 30-day ban were the extreme edge cases who were literally abusing new players. Not simply hitting clips on them, but were intentionally dragging games out into overtime and then playing keepaway for as long as possible.
2. Most of the freestylers instead had their casual MMR boosted to 1600. Which they absolutely lost their shit over (yes, they lost their shit over having their MMR boosted by 1500 points).
3. Psyonix has stated that if freestylers play like how Fire and Evample do (which is to say, not own-goaling or forfeiting, or otherwise throwing), that's acceptable. So if you go for a crazy clip, miss, and get scored on because you've taken yourself completely out of the play, that's fine. What they don't want is people intentionally sticking around 100-300MMR so that they're only going up against absolute n00bs that don't have a hope in hell of even coming close to making a save.
Also, there's a really simple solution to the problem of fake clips -- set up an RL Freestyle discord server. Anyone who wants to do clips must invite at least one person not in the same Freestyle clan as them to a private match, both players must record the match and upload the replay file at the end for the clip to be verified. This ensures the integrity of the clips, as well as ensures that the only people getting clipped on are 100% willing participants.
This is the only correct answer here. Perfectly laid out.
freestyle clan? it's not like people who aren't in the same team are at war with each other lol. and the entire point is that people who aren't good enough to join notable teams can just fake clips with their friends that also aren't on teams. not sure where this solution is coming from.
Agree with everything except your implied take on number 2, and a detail in your final solution. The reason that's a problem is because some shots are literally impossible to hit at that mmr, specifically solo freestyle style shots like triple musties, double musty sidewalls, deca helis, etc. They're simply too slow and any player at that rank will challenge during the shot, ruining it every time, no doubt. 1600 is way too high for solo freestylers to clip in.
Keep in mind that solo freestyling and comp clip hitting are much different in the style of clips. Comp clip hitting shots from players like mesko, henkovic, lfc, etc. Are generally very short clips with not much too them mechanically, they're just clean and the competitive environment makes them impressive in a different way. Typically only 1-3 resets, maybe a musty or two, but that's about the extent of it. Solo freestylers go for much more complex shots, shots like the ones listed above in the last paragraph, which are nearly impossible in a competitive environment , unless the opponent makes multiple horrible mistakes, which very very very rarely happens.
As for the discord server, that still doesn't solve the clip verification problem. There would be far far far too many replays to verify, as this wouldn't just be for the top freestylers to be a part of I assume. It's a good solution to find people to play with, which I fully support, but it doesn't solve the verification issue.
@@nixusheart The point being that if you only had 3 guys from Pulse in a private match, someone from outside of Pulse might say "Yeah yeah, it's 100% fake, you guys are all motivated to support each other." If they ensure that it's not all members from the same team, then it should be 100% valid.
People who aren't good enough to join notable teams and get banned from the Discord server and then start faking clips aren't something anyone is going to give a shit about.
@@fogpivvl8341 How does having multiple people in the private match not solve the verification issue? You can't fake a clip with someone else there, because any mutators affect them too. It's not like you can play the game at 1/4 speed and the other people in the lobby aren't going to notice.
I overall think that Psyonix is _more_ in the right here: The argument that "people can just leave" is not just faulty for the reasons you named - but even if people followed that advice, freestylers wouldn't be able to hit their clips because the game stops once all opponents have left. So at that point everyone loses.
I do agree though that a full month with no prior statement about this measure being upcoming is unreasonably harsh - even if you count them as repeat-offenders (since they've done it for a while, and should know the game well enough to know what they're doing is not in the spirit (or even letter) of the rules).
Also the fact that players shouldnt have to leave and keep putting off playing rl because every time they enter a game its a freestyler. Its indirectly punishing the player no matter how you cut it
"people can just leave" YOU CAN'T because in fucking casual you will get BAN...
yeah psyonix did a good thing they should have done a long time ago
@@morbid1. They only started giving out bans in casual when they added the FF button in casual for some reason.

LOL. I guess when serial killers dont get caught they just start beleiving that killing is legal now? UAhuAHUhaUhaUhAUhaUahUhaUhAUhAUha
I personally consider clipping on a silver to be a "fake clip" also. I like how Evample does his stuff. Those are great clips against people who didnt just start playing. Maybe Psyonix should work on a freestyle game mode? Each side taking turns defending or trying to clip. Maybe with defender being limited to one side of the field or something. idk.
They aren't close to freestyling standards
@@othorl because it is against people who are competent enough to save those "freestyling standards shots"

Thx a for explaining this, this was really helpful👍
Probably the only objective video I've seen on the topic that fairly explains the story from both sides. Fake clips are going to become a really big issue so psyonix should definitely do something about that.
Take a cue from the speedrunning community on how to verify freestyle clips: require simultaneous video of the person performing the freestyling so you can see their controls at the same time they're performing the freestyling. Or require the clips be taken from a live stream showing the full match where the clip occurred from start to finish - creating the private match, showing all mutators, etc.
Options exist. This is a problem that speedrunning communities have had to tackle for longer than most RL players have been alive!
Psyonix could also update the replay system to save all active mutators from a private match (if they aren't doing so), show them during playback, and honor them in the replay. So if slow-mo is turned on, it's played back in slow-mo, not at normal speed. So if they aren't already doing that, that'd be the place to start.
Great points! These are better solutions than creating a new freestyle mode.
@@hBrynx I'm actually surprised the replay files DON'T contain all the mutators and other private match metadata, to be honest. Since replay files can also be used by Psyonix for debugging, you'd think they'd include all the necessary info to replicate the match.
Or perhaps it actually does, but RL isn't displaying that info when playing it back. Which makes me wonder if there's a way to get to that info, again if it's being stored off, that Psyonix isn't making public. Perhaps a BakkesMod plugin could display that info if it's in there.

@@SeanRainey no, they smurf on bronzes that play casual and ruin their experience. That's the reason for this movement
@@SeanRainey The idea is that if you are at the same level as them you will have a far far harder time freestyling cause the opponent will shut it down real quick. The only real solution is a playlist specifically for freestyling
@@elasticnoob123 Yea I suppose they'd have to program a freestyle playlist?
I guess the whole act of Freestyling / clipping on a significantly lower rank opponent is just uncool and unfair, and essentially cheating. So I'm cool with these smurfs / FS's getting the punishment they deserve, and maybe something will be made to accommodate the playstyle, if not just private matches.
To assume a far lesser oppenent just has to be "ok" with a FS's smurfing / clipping on them, and having no chance of winning, just so the FR can post a cool clip, is inherently shitty.

@@susnojutsu2525 yes but they are a pro player in a low lobby. What difference does it make? A freestyle is educational to show what’s possible. Pushing the limits of car and ball control. I don’t see the difference.
Two other solutions:
1. Be able to check mutators and mods in a replay file
2. (Copy of my comment in that Psyonix Reddit post below)
Make a mode called Freestyle where the ball turns the color of the player who should have possession and is placed near one end of the field (like kickoffs for Heatseeker). The other player is either ghosted out and cannot physically interact with the other player or ball, or is spawned outside the field. The player with possession has 20 seconds to get the ball higher than the crossbar. If it runs out, he took too long and loses possession (to prevent griefing). Once it's above crossbar height, the timer becomes 60 seconds. If the ball touches the ground or 60 seconds runs out, he loses possession and the ball and players are switched out for the new posession. If the ball goes in the net... yay!
At a minimum, it's about giving each person 5 possessions per match (which could be nearly up to 15 minutes if both players always take almost the entirety of their time), but more realistically might take 2-5 minutes at low ranks and 5-10 for higher ranks.
Maybe scoring could be done by means of tracking how high the ball was and how long it was at different heights. Each second the ball is a certain number of Unreal Units above the ground is worth points based on height above court. Presumably, a better player that holds it longer and higher is better. A low rank player could keep it just off the ground for a while with a ground dribble, but a higher rank player can air dribble all day. It's not perfect - obviously pogoing and other tricks take the ball down - but it's about the best I can think of.
The mode would track four stats to deconflict ties. First (obviously), highest points earned by a scored shot. Second, total points earned by scored shots. Third, highest points by a failed shot. Fourth, total points by failed shots. If none of those decide a winner, a countdown starts, and an air strike missile shoots to random parts of the map every half second. The last player alive wins. If the strike kills both, whoever was further from the strike's contact point wins. If they were somehow equally distant, the game flips a coin.
Oh, and they could totally turn microphones on for all in a freestyle match.
TL;DR

This is great. The amount of times I've entered a casual match and opponents were talking shit cuz I wanted to play normal and would ruin their set up like I give a fuck. Hope they get banned aswell
A commonly proposed solution is to add a freestyling playlist where you get points for cool shots. I say you don't need anything but a verified freeplay sort of thing. Freestylers don't want defenders in the net, if they do then they can go hit clips in, well, ranked, high mmr casual, whatever. Make a freeplay server anyone can use to hit their clips.
Literally, even something as simple as an online freeplay-like mode where no modifiers or mods function would do the trick.
well there is a reason they dont do it in freeplay and that is that you actually do want a defender to make it seem like a proper clip, and for edits. Read my comment and you'll understand the topic a bit better my guy :)
@@-fulleclipse-9380 I scrolled for a couple hundred comments and didn't see yours frendo. A copy + paste would be helpful. But, without having read it, I haven't seen that take anywhere else. Freestyling has progressed so far that the typical clip isn't viable to hit on a defender of equal skill (if it was then this whole thing would be a non issue). Pretty much everyone knows this. A good clip is impressive because of the skill required to hit the shot, not because they outplayed the defender. Psyonix just needs a way to verify that they, in fact, did hit the clip without TAS or mutators or whatnot.
@@TeddyGoali sorry for the vague comment. I don't mean against an equal defender I mean a crappy defender. Here is the copy + paste for further detail: My solution: if freestylers play comp, them going for crazy shots will get them to a certain point, until players get good enough to where they start loosing. Hopefully this will have them balance at a competitive rank where there will be plenty of chanches to go for crazy shots, not have them be disturbed as much, and give the competitive players a fair chance to win! Say...plat, diamond? Well here is the true dillemma. You can't freestyle with no defender and call it a clip. Sure it is cool but there is that taint of it not being defended, but you can't have a pro, heck anyone who can areial ruining every shot. So a bad defender is the perfect medium, but then the bad defender has a horrible time. We see this in Pulse Fire's videos where sometimes the opponents ruin the shot. He needs to "domesticate them" to hit the clip, which takes longer, but maybe a skill the freestyle community needs to accept. See, not everyone has the time to put in as much time as Pulse Fire does, and is a freestyler for fun, not profession. I think Psyonix definitely could have handeled the situation better, but keeping everybody in the community happy, is impossible, so let's just be mindful of that. After all, it is a game.
@@-fulleclipse-9380 "you can't freestyle with no defender and call it a clip." This is where we disagree. As I said before, freestyling has progressed to a point that most freestyle shots are not viable against, well, as you say anyone who can aerial. Everyone knows this. So for me, and I think this is a very reasonable take, the impressive part of a freestyler's clip is not that they got it past a defender - its that they managed to hit 3 resets and 2 mustys or whatnot.
If they want to prove that they hit this without any modifiers then, right now, they need to go into online matches. If they don't throw then they will eventually be placed against people who can defend them. So they smurf - which ruins the game for their opponents.
To avoid this Psyonix needs a way to verify that clips were hit legitimately. An online freeplay mode would do this. If you want a defender in the net then maybe a freestyle playlist. Or, it seems to me that a "freestyle defender bot" would do just as well - a bot that sits in net but is guaranteed to miss. That seems to solve everybody's issues. Freestylers get to play pretty much how they have been, but now they aren't ruining games.
I don't understand why psyonix does not create a "Freestyling" playlist? I don't see any downsides to that
then you will have griefers that will come in and tryhard
Probably wouldn’t be enough population in the playlist. Also freestylers prefer to have the ball for 100% off the match time. Sharing that with other freestylers might be hard for them
I have a possible solution. If your ranked at a specific tier for example (grandchamp 2, champ 3...) your casual mmr should not drop below your tier 1 rank (grandchamp1, champ1). Like having an mmr floor you can't drop below unless you drop your tier 1 rank in ranked. I believe this would solve the big problems and keep the higher ranks in higher ranked casual.
Its so nice watching rocket league videos knowing damn well that I don't have rocket league and hate giving my email to epic games
Several ideas here:
1. Add a specific game mode for freestyling. (Not necessarily a duplicate version of the casual mode).
2. Add a game mode for new/low-skilled players only. (Need rules to define that category of players).
3. Change the matchmaking rules in casual. (Take into consideration the number of hours played, the best rank and any other statistics Psyonix have).
with number 2, players could easily find a way to get pass that, just like smurfing. Like making a new account or dropping their rank etc
@@revo1023 then just ban them. freestylers arent making new accounts to play low mmr, they do it on their mains. making new accounts to play against bad opponents in a "newcomer" gamemode is just as, if not more, scummy as smurfing in ranked.
If you think about it the 3rd solution (considering the no. of hours played) can be a great solution
@@revo1023 and it would probably not have enough players
1. People won't respect it as a no-tryhard gamemode. Similar Gamemodes have been implemented in other games. A non-sweat environment to perform the more creative mechanics of the game. An example of this is "Tanki Online". And the gamemode "Parkour". You'd always get tryhards in there and the people parkouring just gave up.
2. That doesn't make sense. People install a game to play a quick game, not bother around specific Gamemodes that adhere to their exact skill level. Idk how to explain it,but It doesn't work. You can't just have a separate gamemode labelled "THIS IS CASUAL BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE MMR, IT IS JUST FOR YOU BRONZES, TO MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GET FREESTYLED ON." no, they're just going to queue up a casual game.
3.and for this one people can just create a new account, or for your second point, not play ranked so their mmr is low, and the way you described it as take their highest rank they've been. Well that doesn't work because people can decrease in skill over time and bot being able to keep up anymore. Also that doesn't run along with the fact that there is mmr that goes up and down.
Just a lot of non-thought out solutions, mate. All these people in the comments section just thinkung they've solved the whole situation.
The story telling skills this guy has is insane!
I remember seeing a video just weeks ago where it was mentioned that if you do the private match slo-mo trick, the "Boost" text in the boost meter will flash at double the speed.
I'm not a fan of free styling and I hate smurfs which is what free styling up until this point has been forced to be. That being said I have an appreciation for the dedication free styling requires. After watching your video I also understand the need for authentication free stylers need for their clips. I think the easiest (everyone wins) solution is a new gamemode called freestyle. you que the game and it starts a public game with the people in your party 1-8 and with no time limit you can free style all you want with authentication. Best part is everyone is a willing participant.
I think a mode for free stylers would work well in this way:
1. There's lobbies of a handful of freestyles, when you que up you get placed in one of these lobbies and everyone has a set amount of time/tries to hit a clip.
2. Once everyone has hit thier clip, everything is anonymized and everyone goes through and watches all the clips in a kind of goal replay style.
3. Everyone in the lobby then gets to vote on their favorite clip(obviously not being able to vote on thier own)
This idea could be expanded to include teams as well. It would allow for a semi competitive free style mode and because it's still public multiplayer it'd be more difficult to fake.
Theres gonna be people who just do freestyle mode to save every shot and ruin freestylers day
What about instead of adding a extra freestyle gamemode, they make a little checkbox in the casual playlist that if you want you can tick it to allow freestylers to play in your games. This could also be just a feature around the mmr of diamonds and above so its more fair. The freestylers could either 'tag' themselves or be 'tagged' by psyonix so that they can only queue in casual with people with the checkbox ticked (which is reinforcing the 100% willing partcipants part)
Thats the best suggestion I've read so far. Having it unchecked by default ensures a better and more fair experience for new players, while still having the opportunity to check it if a Player wants to freestyle himself or allow the matchmaking algorithm to find a match faster if all the player wants to do is warming up or messing around. In that case a platinum or diamond player wouldn't mind a party of FS inside their lobby, or otherwise just uncheck the box again before the next game.
Its so easy to implement as well. Every player that has played more than X hours and/or is currently significantly below his peak rank (e.g. -400 mmr, including the actual ranked mmr) gets tagged as a FS until his casual rating goes up to "normal" again.
I think the only way to get around this as a FS would be to constantly create new smurf accounts to stay below the minimum hour mark, which might simply be too much work for most of them.
@@paul5857 Yeah 100%, i feel like if there were to be a FS gamemode it wouldnt get as many people playing it as if there was a solution for casual, also yeah people at that mmr wouldnt care if a FS is in their lobby. Yeah psyonix wouldnt need to make a whole new gamemode they could just implement a little pop up box with text, and yeah i also think that like a 'auto tagger' could kinda work if it senses a player that dropped like a shit ton of mmr then they get tagged as one, or atleast theres a auto bot that senses the loss of alot of mmr then gets sent to a real person for like a manual review.
Another thing could be if they then added that you can leave the match whenever you want, without banning, when someone in the lobby is a freestyler
I like this, and it would slow down matchmaking a little, especially in certain mmr ranges, but at the ranks that matter, I think theres enough player base it would be fine
Sounds way easier to implement than an extra playlist. I like that idea
Great video, thanks for bringing this up. To Psyonix I'd say, "about gosh darn time fellas". As for the people saying there should be a separate lobby for free styling, I don't think they got what the banning was about. They're banning smurfs, not free stylers. So basically what you're saying is that smurfs should have an exclusive lobby where they can play against other smurfs😄, but then that defeats the whole purpose of smurfing. These idiots are smurfing exactly so they don't have to go up against people of matching skill, so they can feed their little egos by seeing "YOUR TEAM WINS" on their screens, and make fake videos so their friends on social media would think they're actually cool.
Excellent points Way. The only thing I strongly disagree with is the idea that some of these players didn't realize what they were doing was against TOS. You absolutely know when you're styling on players who are still learning their controls that you're doing something wrong. Anyways, this video brings some much needed PERSPECTIVE to the community. Understanding why the FSers are against playing in private matches is a very big deal. All I can think of as a solution is to create a FS playlist... but then do you ban players who are trolling the freestylers? Or, create a new type of private match solely for freestylers, one that plays like a public match, to improve authenticity. Regardless, I agree with what you say. This is a step in the right direction and I too hope that Psyonix looks at this entire situation and learns that there are better ways to handle these things. Great video, much love and God bless
What about a new freestyle mode? You get extended time, take turns for scoring (or try to save each shot) and users get the chance to validate their achievements.
Honestly, I love being able to occasionally experience the full breath of player skill in my multiplayer games. Especially when it's a population as small as grandmaster. Like, if these people are getting free styled once on every hundred or so games, I perceive that as a cool, chance encounter.
It’s not 1/100 games at low mmr tho.
@@joshwakelin4587 drat...
New player who peaked in Silver 3 here. There is more smurfing in this game than I recall seeing in anything I've played in the last 5 years if not longer. Being matched against people who wouldn't even let me touch the ball because they kept playing in the air at least every third match already discouraged me to quit. Matchmaking should at least try to be skill-based, this was just a frustrating experience even if those kids with bloated egos would often give me the win after I pretended to care about their tricks for a couple minutes.
finally a good video about this situation
They should make a freestyle HORSE playlist. Put a 10-15 second shot timer and alternate kickoffs. Assign pop ups for various car/ball interactions. (Ex: 3x air roll, ceiling bounce, flip reset, backboard bounce)
3x air roll?
Just a plain freestyle 1v1 playlist would be much better. Horse playlists with preset shots go against half the fun of freestyling, which is creativity. Also for any experienced freestylers, even moderately, those shots are way too simple. There wouldn't be a good way to set shots everyone can do that are still fun for higher level players. A match of only the shots you listed sounds like the most boring thing imaginable to me. Horse would be cool, but not too practical. Just a general freestyle mode where it's just a normal match where the score and rank dont matter would work better. Not even a shot timer needed really, as some shots can just take longer than 15 seconds, even with limited boost
@@Mona-.- love when crying freestylers are just trying to make fun of other people. just sit down kid and take the L, we know how much you all love to

I’d like to add that I was not affected by this drama and I actually 100% agree with you (the fact that the deranking freestylers are in the wrong)

icl I’d be happy to be considered a freestyler. My mechs are very mid for my rank.
(I predict that you won’t give any meaningful response, just another “ok cry” or smth similar)
I also thought I’d be nice and add a TL;DR summary just in case you used that excuse too
In my opinion the best solution would be if pysonix would remove these bans and reset their mmr to equivalent to their competitive mmr. In the other hand the freestylers should ask first the other side whether they want to freestyle or not. If not then they can just leave. (leaving from 1v1 wont lead to punishment)
Yeah as a lower rank I really hate it when I get matched up with freestylers, I just quit as soon as I notice. Really not a good experience...
It's happening in rank now n u see people leaving the team party so they don't look like they always play together
It's not up to the community to find a path, it's Psyonix's responsibility to make way for freestylers by adding a dedicated game mode.
It kind of is up to the community cuz do you really think psyonix will do anything to try and help? cuz i dont
Thank you for responding to this like an adult instead of just shitting on freestyling without knowing the facts. You took the argument of freestylers, which most people have been ignoring, and made it easy to understand. The amount of content creators i respected took a 15 minute look on twitter then made a video with horrible takes and arguments. Its important that someone with a big following like you actually decided to listen to us. I hope this video helps make the changes needed for the community.

@MBYahooo not speaking for North, but based on the way most smurfs and/or freestylers talk and behave in game, a huge portion will continue to wreck other people's matches. It's more of an attention and ego thing for most out there from what I've seen.
The fact that I’m at the same cas mmr as wayton made me realize I’m probly the problem every time I play casual 3s
I wonder if Psyonix' "response" will end up being a new playlist/game mode. Very curious to see how that would work.
I wish more freestylers were like Evample. Do you know how high the skill ceiling would go if every mech god combined their mechs with game sense and were capable of freestyling on top 100 players
But evample isn't a freestyler

Comp freestyling should become the meta. The clips are rarer to create, yet are more authentic for the "real opponent aspect." As great as casual freestyling clips are, they are basically against bots with limited boost. I would imagine getting clipped on, or attempted to get clipped on while being sub silver would leave a sour taste on the game if forced to watch helplessly.
Absolutely not. The types of shot in comp clip hitting are nowhere near casual clips. A top level comp clip might be a triple flip reset. It’s too basic. A casual freestyle could consist of a penta heli flip reset, which simply wouldn’t be doable in ranked. It would kill freestyling.
The meta should be freestyle tournaments, then people who just wanna have fun or want to rank up wont by toyed around by freestylers and smurfs who grief thier games
@@v.7382 it’s not about rank. This is casual. People are being banned in a mode that DOESNT HAVE RANKS because they are “smurfing” (which is deliberately lowering your rank for easier lobbies). The bans are stupid

As a very very new player like 3 weeks in I'll speak from a rare perspective. When I get in a game and someone starts doing freestyle off the ceiling stuff I get hyped. I pull back out the way and let them doit. I watch and learn. I don't wanna play the game on noob mode until I'm good. You get better and learn from fighting these clip demons.
So youre ok facing smurfs aswell then?
Thank you! This actually isn’t a rare perspective in my experience. I often come up against people who love watching me freestyle. It’s often the people who are ranked a lot higher that complain. For example Cupid on Twitter has the most ridiculous comments on the situation and he recently hit GC.
@@mangoofmagic4305 I'm not a fan of smurfing on any game. I would say my argument would be remove sbmm from casual game modes on all games. Noone wants to sweat every single match of any game especially unranked. Then you get those games where players are worse and you can hit clips or you fight the demi God who doesn't go outside and learn. Which in turn would kill the point of smurfing and most (not all but most wouldn't waste the time doing it).
@@RealCookieOG_ I'm a game grinder and I understand you don't start off number one. It takes time. Back in the day dying to someone max rank in cod or halo whatever game felt fun. You didn't mind losing cuz you knew they grinded the game and earned it. I enjoy the grind and the learning phase. You only become the best from fighting the best in whatever game sport or situation your in.
You sound like a freestyler pretending to be new (that's exactly what some of the freestylers said motivated them to get into freestyling in the first place). Even if this is legit, this would be the minority of new players. Not everyone gets motivated by getting crapped on by better players. It's far more common to get frustrated at the unfair nature of the matchup and quit the game entirely, especially if it happens a lot.
Diamond III, playing hoops, only matching agains grant champions. Couple times against SL. You can't even imagine the difference in skill. The guys can score like 10 goals and me and my teammate can't even get the ball. Matchmaking is way off and I don't really know why.

I was playing casual the other day. the other team was highly skilled hitting crazy shots. then they forfiet being up 3 goals with 30s left. doesn't t happen often but i thought it was kinda weird. now makes sense with the hidden rank
As a diamond 2 in some gamemodes it’s a pain, but in casual if I’m getting freestyled on it’s kinda fun to sit back and watch. Of course, if I was a fresh player I’d have no clue what was happening.
It's good that Psyonic is addressing it. I'm in favour of what they've done but not how they've done it and they could be offering a better solution; a freestyler mode - something! Cos what Freestylers are doing is pretty shitty (lowering the MMR to newbie level) and they know it so that's probably the reason for the stupid long bans. I'd say play at their level but I sense that they get off on it a bit; the fact the newbies have no chance at stopping them. I'd appreciate it a lot more knowing it's done at their actual skill level.
In ranked matches how come I come across so many unranked great and not so great players? Do some ranks not show cross platform? Or are the not so great ones aspiring smurfs?
I didn’t hear about this until this video, but by the thumbnail I thought they were gonna get rid of air-roll or sm😭
I’m honestly so happy they are doing something about this, coming from a player that isn’t a high or insane mmr because I don’t dedicate much time to the game. When I do play I like to get on and play people my mmr and skill level. Not get absolutely smashed and Smurfed on until they forfeit the match so they don’t gain mmr. Which also raises my mmr and makes me play again players that are also still out of my skill level and now I am again stuck playing against people who out skill me and I lose again but placed back in the mmr of the freestylers. It’s a never ending cycle, I think this is a great thing they are enforcing, also for people wondering I’m at about 600 hours over a 4 year period
👆Wow Congratulations, you have been selected among our shortlisted winners INBOX ME😊💯
The easiest approach to this seems to be changing the way replays work and somehow make a "fake shot" be discernable.
so when i hit a musty double tap in ranked i'm gonna get banned now, sweet!
I agree with the twitter dude. if I couldn't touch the ball in silver I Probably would have quit. but at diamond you occasionally run into freestylers. I try to focus on defense first so I've learned how to save shot & improve by playing against players I believe to be better than me.
my teammates don't like it though. I usually end up finishing the match with two Bots, but I have fun ball chasing & trying to compete with a disadvantage. I'm currently champ in most of my Comp playlists, with 1600 casual mmr. I like to try cool shots but in no way am I a freestyler. half the time if a player goes AFK I'll go chill by him & let the other guys have a 2v2.
Me and my friend picked up the game when it became F2P to see how it is (always looked dumb to me to pay 20e for a boring soccer car game) -
i instantly fell in love with it - friend quit after a day. Reason: There was a freestyler against us the first game we played against players.
I got excited to learn how to do such things ( still can't ) but friend figured this is not how the game is supposed to be played and it ruined all the fun.
There should be some kind of smurf buff… like a 1 useable key to create your RL acc which needs to be paired with ur phone number to verify.
I mean they don’t care if they get banned on smurf accounts, they just create a new one
When I was a noob at RL, (still am lol) I got paired against two insane freestylers and I saved that game so I could try to figure out what they are doing. I learned a lot just watching them play I started practicing the passes and try the shots lol
I appreciate you bringing in BOTH sides of this in and not being BIASED but also can’t psyonix just make a que based playlist for freestylers and EVERY RANK TO PLAY IN and just get into matches as fast as possible? Who would that hurt?
The fake clips thing has been an issue but most big issues get flushed out by the frestyling community. And the slow-mo thing you mentioned is incorrect. The flashing of the boost gets messed up when playing back at normal speed. That's why private match clips were generally viewed as legit as long as the boost meter was visible.
Its like when I'd play smash with my brother and his friends. Maybe 6 months before I could take 1 stock from any of them. Then slowly started adapting and got good from getting whooped on so hard for so long. Point being, if ur game is fun enough, WHICH IT IS, losing won't deter u from playing.
How do i report someone for this then? There's no box for intentionally throwing or unsportsmanlike
6:25 “…but you don’t have a rank in Casual”
We just went over the fact that MMR is something that is implemented in Casual RL, and Freestylers will intentionally abuse it to get easier opponents.
Nothing like a freestyler with higher game sense playing in a way their teammates can’t read. Rotating across each other trying to hit a double touch.
Wayton, keep going
I immediately assumed that the freestylers would just make a 6mans-like thing. Even maybe go so far as to hire a programmer to make a bakkas mod plugin that gives you very strict guidelines and restrictions so even if the player were to try and cheat like selecting slo-mo it just disables it in the private matches that way it indicates like "this match is legit". So if you didn't have that plugin you would immediately be considered cheating. Could even have like a session timer hidden in the replay file and input recorder. So if it was a 15 second clip but the session is 40 seconds long it'd be pretty sus.
I remember when i start playing RL with my Sister and we was bronses and we came against champ/GC freestyleers. It was very, very cool to watch, but I tutch the ball 2 times and my Sister didnt tutch the ball
My first game in a silver lobby years back in like the original season 4 or 5 I had a freestyler in my game they would have been about champion level at the time and I still remember how pathetic it made me feel
I had terrible experiences playing against freestylers when i first started and couldnt even leave cause my teammate woulndt forfeit
I understand their point
