Devonshire, England, where my family has roots, was one of two regions of the UK where Catholics resisting the Crown and the Church of England were put down by martial violence. Another story not in the American curriculum. The British learn about and celebrate it.

I missed this live. A fantastic series. On the Jesuits, years ago I read a book authored by a Jesuit on the history of Jesuits in Oregon Country. I was extremely impressed by their fortitude and resiliency, a commitment and courage I never had. Sometimes alone traveling in the dead of snowy winter. There was no air cavalry to fly in to your rescue back then. No cellphone with 9-11. And this could be dangerous Amerindian territory--among whom torturing a person to death was not seen as unethical but an occasion for group celebration.

Fr. Hidalgo was also a heretical priest excommunicated. He was brought up before the Inquisition in Mexico. He was heavily influenced by French philosophes . His library was full of French books that it was nicknamed “little Paris”.

French Catholic faithful are amazing but the Carlists are the perfectionist Catholics because liberalism doesn't exist in their creedo or mindset.

1:12:38 I must object! As a Pole I have to say we also defeated both the islam (during the 17th century stopping the Ottoman expansion in central-eastern Europe - 1621, 1673, 1683) and communism (against the Soviets in 1920 and playing leading part in the fall of Communism in Eastern bloc in the 80s, with the Polish pope). As well as protestantism (through internal counter-reformation that converted back most of dissident nobility & druing several Polish-Swedish wars in 17th century like the Deluge). And considering the Jagiellons, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Polish influence on Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine we can also speak of Polish Catholic civilization on central-eastern Europe, together with the Catholic Austrian civilization of Austro-Hungary and the Austrian Habsburgs (in whom the Jagiellon blood continued).
Another thing that is interesting is that pope Clement XIV who supressed the Jesuits were also the one who approved of first partition of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by Lutheran Prussia, Josephist Austria and Orthodox Russia. The partitions led many Polish patriots to become enamered with liberalism and side with Napoleon, and fight to conquer Catholics in Italy and Spain.

I thought the Spanish Bourbons were semi-salic, meaning that the line could pass through a female family member, to her next male descendent, if they wanted for a living male heir directly

@@Ekatianova Anarcho-capitalism is not based on prinicple of subsidiarity. The principle says that all things that can be realized on a more local level should be done so. In no way it rejects local governments or the state, that are rejected on principle by anarcho-capitalism. State exists and has a right to intervine in necessary cases according to principle of subidiarity.
