    The start of the show, the first seasons, was brilliant, followed by the sons of Ragnar, which was epic and brutal, with ups and downs, Than that ending, bringing us back to the beginning, Floki, but aged, at the end of his journey, He is an Ant, toiling on the forest floor, relieved from the sun by a leaf. He saw England, Paris, and Ice/Greenland, and reached the Americas. He has fought wars, made Ragnar a legend and for those who surrounded themselves with him, he built the best boats. He fathered children, held a wife, made and lost friends, he killed, humiliated, and hated. He worshipped his Gods, hated foreign gods, he communicated and saw them...Floki murdered Aflestan, betrayed Ragnar, and Floki was tortured. Floki sacrificed all and Floki suffered. He changed, doubting the existence of the Gods, he left his ego, where once he thought he saw and talked to them, he now says, it could never have been any of his business. He accepts that he will die soon. He must be happy a son of Ragnar managed to find him, The son of his former best friend, asks him if death is the end, and both stare at the very sun, sinking into the sea, the very dynamics at play of what they shared words about... Life, purpose, meaning, letting go, death, life after death. Its all there for the reaping.

    • @timorthelame1
      @timorthelame1 Před 7 měsíci +13

      I do not believe those two things to be necessarily mutually exclusive. I believe a given time and place can warrant one or the other or even both in equal measures or unequal measures. When protecting ones family or standing for what is righteous, the most ruthless can find a purpose and a wise man is one who can find purpose in preparing to act as the most ruthless when and if need be.
      I do not necessarily disagree with your take nor do I assume that you would disagree with my own. I'm merely sharing my own observation as I feel it relates to your own. I think being a complete man is about achieving a balance between ruthlessness and wisdom as one's situation may require at any given time(s). A life well spent is one spent in constant pursuit of that balance and I think that's what Floki was able to achieve by the end of the series.
      Either way, I think most would agree that Floki's arch was by far the very best of the show, as you have already pointed out.

      Floki was just a zelot who did things for his fundementalist sense. He wanted to be the best pagan ever, thought Ragnar was going to lead them into a glorious future that will secure wealth, riches and Valhalla for them.
      But in time, what Ragnar wanted was a better life for his people, he wanted farmlands, he wanted his folk to become more than what they are, he wanted things way beyond Floki's vision. Floki was too afraid of change because he feared their identity as Northmen was deteriorating. Even Rollo, in time, was thinking killing christians can't be their goal, they have to find a common ground for everyone's benefit.
      After Ragnar's death, and civil war, Floki is just searching to find his gods, and finding nothing in return. All he discovers is more and more questions, more and more mysteries.

Ubbe reminded me of way back in season 1, the early episodes where Ragnar was happy being a farmer and warrior. If Ubbe would have taken the throne, instead of all the wars towards the end, I think Ubbe would have eventually worked to find common ground with Rollo. Floki actually was not television fiction - Hrafna-Flóki was a very real Norse explorer. He was not a viking warrior as depicted in Vikings, but while Iceland had been discovered before him, he was the first Norseman to voyage there intentionally.
      Hrafna translates to Raven, a nickname given to Flóki as he used Ravens to navigate the passage to Iceland. He unknowingly settled in the harshest north-west regions of Iceland, and while the Summer was kind, his settlers suffered a treacherous Winter and he returned to Scandinavia afterwards believing the land to be without merit, but later returned and spent the rest of his life in Iceland.
      While he did not (so far as we know) raid as he did in Vikings, or personally discover Greenland or Canada, he is without doubt one of the most famous Norse explorers to live.

      @@truthhitshardexactly! You're 100% right vikings and especially ragnar's acting was so good you felt transported into there world. The atmosphere, music, everything made you connect,genuinely like and care about the characters.
      This was done so well that when ragnar died I cried, and thought about the scenes days, weeks later. It was so epically done in that if I watch the scene of ragnar at his end I get this deep feeling of sadness, but also of goosebumps and a deep feeling of connection to ragnar's character. To this day this still happens even if just randomly seeing it on youtube.

    Both of them let go of the past and the bloody ways of the Vikings, and got stronger in the process, less self-destructive, allowing them to get old and experiment with new things. I believe that "is that the end" was more about their people, their world as it was, and their culture. Seeing how Ubbe's own brother converted to Christianity or die staying true to their heritage. In the meantime, both Ubbe and Floki let go of the notions of personal glory, war, and Valhalla.

    What wisdom shared by these two on this majestic vista. The sea & it's shore, especially devoid of the masses, certainly knows how to stir the senses. I have experienced that magic during the 60s & 70s with such intensity.
    Loved this series, just as I enjoyed this clip. The almost casual 'logic' of the Vikings, about things that trip up those who think they are so well informed & wise. And yes, I know that this is scripted, but so is the series that held us so spellbound.
    But then, I guess you already know that. Sometimes words can be so empty & thoughts overflowing. This series took me on a journey like few others could. The roaring silence the whispering thunder & the actors so well forged into the characters they portrayed with such conviction. ❤

I really would have liked if Bjorn could have made up for his mistakes and like in the Sagas become a great father and disappear into the frame work of his own monarchy like Rollo. • @YankeeWoodcraft
      @YankeeWoodcraft Před měsícem +1

      @solsticebaby The possibility was undeniable. When Rollo confronted Lagartha, she didn't deny it. She was having relations with both Ragnar and Rollo.
      All Ragnar's other sons were shorter than Bjorn even though they were born from Queen Aslaug who was super tall.
      Plus, Bjorn doesn't fight like Ragnar...he fights like a Berserker...like Rollo.
      Ubba is the truest son of Ragnar in looks, in physique, in temperament and in fighting style.
      Bjorn matches Rollo in more ways than Ragnar. He's calmer, fighting style, stature, build and Rollo & Bjorn hardly ever got mad.
      Ubba was more like Ragnar...laid back, prudent, more loyal to his women.
