As a half-Indonesian, I always appreciate a reaction to The Raid. Thank you. The fighting style is known as Pencak Silat, a blended Sunda/Malay term created just after Indonesian independence to consolidate various practices into a new national martial art form.
I'm curious to see what you think of The Raid 2. It does enhance cinematography and choreography, but I felt the film overall to be over-stylized and bloated, which made it lose some of its Indonesian-ness despite having enjoyable parts.
Another Indonesian action film worth watching is The Night Comes For Us (2018), featuring several of the same actors from The Raid franchise.

@@roems6396 I've been a huge Kung Fu movie fan since Bruce Lee / Jackie Chan whether it was old school overseas films or Hollywood releases. I watched the genre move on to such greats as Jet Li and Donnie Yen. But in the last 20 years or so it evolved from China / Japan / US to other parts of the world. That began in Thailand with Tony Jaa's Ong Bak trilogy which brought Muay Thai to fame. Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, and Joe Taslim are the guys from The Raid and The Raid 2 have influenced the Kung Fu genre the last decade. They've been in other films together on Netflix with more on the way as well as separate like the new Mortal Kombat which Taslim played Sub Zero which has 3 more sequels on the way as well as Ruhian was in John Wick 3 and I know they'll be involved with John Wick 4 as well.

Don't jump into TNCFU just yet. Watch Headshot (2016) and if possible watch Merantau (2009) before everything else. That way you can see and appreciate how the Raid actors and team has improved over the years.

Watch The Raid 2 and long for a third film like the rest of us!

Gareth Evans, the director for the Raid movies also directed (and I believe wrote/created) the Gangs of London series which is an absolutely amazing British series.
Also, I never realized how many cuts the Mad Dog/ Jaka fight has until now. Everything is so clear and visible that the cuts never registered in my mind

I loved your comment at the end about this being a movie that might get you interested in more foreign films. Crime and mafia movies are what got me interested in foreign films because I learned that I loved the crime genre regardless of what the language was, and that became the rabbit hole that lead me to discover amazing foreign films across all genres and nations. I hope this gets you into action movies from around the world (*cough cough* Hong Kong *cough*) and into tons of amazing foreign films to watch you react to. Love the channel!

It should be worth checking out the director Gareth Evans' TV show Gangs of London which has similar fight choreography as The Raid and it's sequel since Season 2 is around the corner. I also recommend looking at Gareth's contribution to the V/H/S anthology series in V/H/S/2 (which a lot of people tend to say is their favourite segment) and his Netflix horror Apostle

And there also MERANTAU (2009), predecessor of Raid films and debut film for Raid team. That film is underrated.
I highly recommend checking it out too. 👍
