After a semi self imposed 15 year break from Golf, I started playing again about 3 months ago...and of course came to YT looking for "tips". Long story short, something leads me to Gen's channel.
When I watch you play, I feel in a Zen state of whipping stillness.
So graceful. Thank you. I hope I can support your journey in some real way someday. Cheers and see you on a big tour soon.
A wee bit more upper body strength, Another 20-30 yards. Then Gen Unstoppable.

Your course management and approach to the mental part of the game is the best. My entire golf game has changed for the better because of your videos. I have watched every one of videos several times and come away with a better golf attitude. Thank you for sharing you thoughts. You are striking the ball at a different level now and your accuracy is awesome. Good luck and I know that so many, like myself, are cheering you on.

Thanks Gen... there is one hole on my home course that has "junk so close on the right" and my mind is saying "I might as well just throw the ball into it" until I got to ignore it and just said oh, it's just 190 to the pin and i play a draw..." bingo... and YOU ARE SO RIGHT-- no-one unless you have a partner in aa tournament NO ONE cares at all, so long as you are polite and don't slow the group.-- they are all in their own heads. So I Listen to the birds, look at the beautiful course and thank God that you are there. My favorite way to play? Alone in the later afternoon with no one behind me... magic... foretaste of Heaven. God bless...Fr. James

I love to fade the ball with the driver. Give me OB down the left and I love it. I'll aim at that and slide the ball back to the fairway. OB right I will go for the draw. Water and sand I will club so I din't go in either.
The key is confidence in what you are doing. If I'm tense I just let go of the club, rest it in my hands and then re grip ever so carefully. If you pump up your forearms with tension and fear you are lost. Get well soon.

    • @GenevieveLingGolf

Awareness is also important, which is exactly what you jsut mentioned! Sometimes people are so afraid and so in the moment they don’t even realize how much they’ve tensed up! Exactly what happened to me without me even realizing last time because I was so absorbed in the moment 😅

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer Před 2 lety

@@GenevieveLingGolf We have a long par 3 with sand left and water right. If I hit 3 iron I can grip the club too tight and hit it right into the water. If I hit 6 iron which doesn't reach any trouble it's usually the best 6 iron of the day. Chip and putt the par.
Shame you have to get old to learn some of these things!

Great video! Golf is a game of inches! The 6 inches between your ears! I’ve been focused on breaking in to the 70’s over the last year. I have recently realized that what has stopped me more than anything is exactly what you mention - fear. Fear of failure, fear of what others think, fear of that blow up hole, that hazard, etc. And to much focus on outcome vs process.

I always tell my friends that a consistent premium golf ball makes a difference. My friend disagrees and tells me I hit better with a beat up found ball than the balls I bring. I tell my friend that's due to me no longer having a fear of losing the golf ball. Golf is cool in part because it's so much a mind game and you learn to know yourself. Great 'conversation' about fear Gen. I used to fear failure because of how others might judge me. Then I became fearful of failure because of how I would judge myself. My fear of failure led me to fail a lot. Now I don't fear failure at all because I do it so often it has become 'second nature' to me 😂. So my advice is - go out and fail a lot. The more you do it the less scary it becomes and the less fearful you become of failing the less often you do. BTW, that course looks wonderful, as does your swing atm.

Also, when I am practicing and concentrating on a couple of specific thoughts during the swing, I will tense up in an attempt to control the aspects I am working on. The focus on different mechanics can cause a lot of tension.

With the exception of one hole on my home course, I don't play golf in a state of fear but instead play in a perpetual state of disappointment as my actual shot rarely matches the vision of the shot I have in my head. Its really hard to let things go and move on to the next shot. I just need to say to myself "what would Gen do" and ill be in a better mood on the course.

  • @pandersonnike

That wasn't a typhoon. That is typical Pacific Northwest weather in Oregon and Washington. lol
The waters off the ocean there are too cold for a tropical storm. PNW rainy season is usually mid-fall through early spring. I digress, but the course looks fun and beautiful! I love the variation of courses you got to play at while in the US. Especially out West where you can get a great range of courses from the desert, valleys, forests, and the ocean all within a few hours of each other.
Also I understand that fear, but more-so as an amateur relearning the game is how I can have a good round or execute shots how I want to within my ability to feeling like nothing is working. It's a major obstacle in my mental game at times where I had no confidence in my game in June and July, but after a good fall I feel great. Of course I feel great and confident in my game again when the season ends in my area. lol

I have a fear of hitting gardeners on the course so I over compensate and hit it too far away from them. They also distract me.

Honestly the maintenance workers sometimes have absolutely no fear for their lives so I feel ya! Happens all the time in Malaysia too 🥵

I play the same course every day and there are 2-3 holes that are in my head and I have a terrible time hitting tee shot in fairway. Today I had my 2nd shot over water on last par 5 and I was afraid of hitting into water and guess what, I hit it in the water!

Hey Gen, on the putt on hole 5, you looked at your line from the high spot. Do you think you took into consideration the momentum of the ball when it rolled over that spot? I think you missed it high because the ball was carrying more momentum than you anticipated. Love your on-course vlogs!

On the 5th hole with the 6 iron side on shot. I'm trying to get my hands more forward like you do but it feels so weird to me when I'm used to having my hands level with the ball around my zipper. Your ball looks more forward than mine also. If I move forward like that I end up hitting a pull or pull hook. Just curious of your thoughts on the sunbject of hands and ball forward. Cheers
