Getting To Know My First Motorcycle - Honda CB125F

  • Hey, I'm Tommy and welcome to the 'Two Wheels Tommy' channel. In this video I take my first ride out on my 2019 Honda CB125F after collecting it last week. A rare break in the hideous weather presented me with the opportunity to ride to the post office (This is why I got a motorcycle in the first place). I went on an extended loop through to the beach at Yaverland on the Isle of Wight. On the way back I was hoping to get back before it started raining again, and had my first near-miss with an idiot driver. Lots of good slow moving practice, and some hill starts thrown in for good measure. It is all coming together! Now, 10 days of solid rain but I'm gagging to get back out there!!
    This series will follow my progress from my CBT all the way to getting my full bike licence. Gaps along the way will be filled with product reviews for items I will use along the way to see what works and what doesn't, and what you really do need, and honestly don't need! You can also expect some beautiful rides out around the beautiful Isle of Wight where I call home, and shopping for my first 125cc motorcyle...
    It would be great to have you along for the ride so smash that subscribe button, and I will see you next time for more :)

    Am I worrying too much about manhole covers? What's the deal⁉⁉

    • @a77mighty666
      @a77mighty666 Před 8 měsíci +11

      nah you're right to be cautious with them mate, specially in the wet. they not so bad in a straight line, but on a corner, wet or dry they can slip your front wheel from under you. if you do find yourself having to go over one in a corner, do not target fixate on it, keep looking ahead, dont brake or accelerate on the man hole cover as that increases chances of slippage. an emergency stop on a wet road might lock the back wheel but shouldnt lock the front as all the weight is transferred to the front under heavy breaking making the rear end lighter. i live in scotland so always got wet roads, my xt660x will drift if you give it too much throttle on a roundabout lol

    • @a77mighty666
      @a77mighty666 Před 8 měsíci +8

      and yes road markings will slip in the wet too, white/yellow lines etc

      Manhole covers and white lines will always be slippy in the rain when the bike is banked over like on bends and traffic islands, dont worry too much when the bike is upright unless accelerating or breaking. Also even in the dry beware of diesel being spilled by trucks over filing on bends, islands etc, and in your part of the country manure on the roads lol

      you are right to be wary, but don't let them mess with your mind! Tyre quality also has a big bearing. Do you have decent quality branded tyres on the bike?

    Being an x - instructor it's interesting watching your new bike life journeys, I watched your cbt video and I respect your riding school for not excepting jogging bottoms of the student, most schools wouldn't. Get used to being abused with your L plates, drivers think your gonna hold them up, watch out for cats under parked cars running out, mud , desisel, wet leaves, painted road surface, after 35 + years of riding I'm still learning, I wish you well and hope you get a full liscence and really start to enjoy the roads.

    • @TwoWheelsTommy
      @TwoWheelsTommy  Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks Stu. I think that was the right move, it wouldn't have hurt the lad to do a bit of research to figure out what was acceptable attire prior to turning up. I do also think that schools should make a point of telling people too at point of booking. Most people doing a CBT will have no clue about the do's and dont's. You are the first to mention cats so I'll keep an eye out for them! Thanks for watching 👍

    Its amazing how many people don't observe behind them enough. Also turning into minor roads and out on to major is Observations/signal/maneuver. Im always looking over my shoulder before changing direction or lanes. I don't trust my mirrors, they have massive blind spots. Too many dickheads on the road to think everyone is going to sit behind you at the speed limit or deal with a rider who's a bit shakey. Your doing alright pal, just keep riding and get that experience up.

    Really enjoyable vlog mate. The joys/excitement of a new bike. As for the gear changes, you will find that there is no need to actually 'pull' the clutch in, you only need to do that on a start off and when you stop, on an actually gear change it's a case of just giving it a quick flick, same with the throttle. Best of luck with your rides and, keep safe 👍. Oh yeah, watch out for wet grids! 😁.

    Top Job, get out as much as you can. Avoid any temptation to coast around corners with the throttle closed when you do ride in the rain. You still have 70% of your grip available, just don't go wild. Coasting or closed throttle will reduce the grip by reducing traction

      We go by KW over here in Ireland. If you are over 24 you can go for A class provisional licence so you can ride any size engine bike once your IBT was done on an A class size bike. I did the A2 class IBT which is 35KW so I had to get my 650 restricted. My instructor thought A class was too much for me. But I will do a progressive class before my full licence test so I can get my A full licence. It's all a money racket. @@TwoWheelsTommy

      @@irishcoffeetruecrime Couldn't agree more its just to squeeze more money out of us. Now they are proposing new rules to allow riders to be younger and have access to bigger KW bikes bypassing most of the congestion of tests required (or so i believe its hard to understand currently) I would imagine this is for the electric bike riders so they can push for more money. Just a big old mess, i am having to wait to do a CBT which is another 3 weeks away having waited 2 weeks already. After that i can't imagine how much faff i'll go through just to get my unrestricted licence. Its funny as my theory is earlier than my CBT. Hopefully it's going to go well and they won't have me sit too many practical lessons before i can take the MOD1, MOD2. Almost feel like not bothering because its just a huge hassle having to wade through it all.

    Hey man, really enjoying your content. Reminds me so much of my motorcycle journey when I first started riding. I've taken down a lot of the vlogs I did when I was a biking bairn, but I love going back to my first few videos and remembering all the things I did and people I met. That's one of the great things about making content like this. Memories to look back on! Your riding is pretty damn good considering you're new to riding. Don't sweat riding in the rain too much, you almost always have more grip than you expect. I don't bother avoiding manhole covers all the time, if you're just going in a straight line and there are no major hazards, just ignore them. If it's wet and you're in a city try to avoid running over the top of them. In most situations, there's no need to do a slalom. I'm hoping to buy an old Honda CG125 and ride it to Switzerland next year. Can't wait!

    Did my CBT 10+ years ago and had a CBF 125 for 18months just to get some road time. A cautious approach is good, especially this time of year. Like others have said be nice and smooth, covers and lines can be slippier in the wet. Only really felt the front lose grip on one cover but it gets the adrenaline going for sure. Spending a bit of time on my 125 before I did DA I thought was invaluable.

    Well done. I got back to riding after a 20 year break and bought the same bike as you to get back in to riding after such a long layoff. I didn't have L plates as I already had a full license, but not many nods when I had the bike. I had it for 6 months before I got a bigger bike and then the nods came 😀
    For some strange reason some motorcyclist don't acknowledge 125 and learners. If I see someone on a 125 and L plates I always give them a nod (not delivery riders on scooters) as I want to encourage them to keep riding and maybe get their full license.

Ride at your own pace and enjoy the ride. You are doing as good as anyone can do with your experience. In 2015 this was also my first ever bike. It had just been released. Super smooth, gear indicator, lots of fun. Good job on manhole cover spotting. I vividly remember the cb125f squirm on a roundabout when on a wet winters day. It has such skinny tyres that you do have to be more mindful of painted surface and manhole covers. I remember the gearbox being a bit crunchy and that the gear indicator was useful at first , but as you get better, it’s unnecessary. Got luck with your A licence next year. Don’t be tempted to go too early, take your time to feel like you’re very much in control as a 230 +kg bike will need you to be assertive.

These bikes have done me well. Not the best build quality out there, so your question on gear changes, genuinely, of course they’ll get better, but they’ll never be super smooth because the quality of the gearbox if just not great. Hi mate. Regarding grip in rain depends on many factors, type of tyres used, road texture, weather temps, speed, etc etc. You can get technical and state that "The 'stickiness' of a road surface is measured by assessing its coefficient of friction (COF). On a good dry road we would expect a COF of around 0.7 - that's a ratio of how much sideways force is required to move a block compared to its weight. If the road is wet, the COF would be reduced to about 0.5."..... but nothing beats getting a feel for the roads with experience. Avoid manhole covrers and white lines like the plague in wet weather. Don't be fooled that the dry line in the middle of the road will always give you more grip in the rain, ask yourself why is it dry? It is the oil line that cars and lorries etc tend to drip oil on. Great Views of the IOW brings back memories as i used to deliver there twice a week from the Midlands .

    • @TwoWheelsTommy
      @TwoWheelsTommy  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hi Michael, thanks for those brilliant tips there. I actually understood all of the coefficient of friction stuff. I'm surprised it doesn't decrease more than that when wet. • @michaelh9918
      @michaelh9918 Před 8 měsíci

    Good vid and plenty of info. Love the fact I can hear the bike and the gear changes. Yes I hate manhole covers too..When we have to take tests to drive and mot’s to ensure our bikes are fit and safe for the roads, then it’s only fair that the roads should be fit and safe for our bikes as well. That means there is no safe reason for man hole covers to be in the roads they should all be in verges as they are a real and present danger to all two wheel transport. If you ever come off because of the manhole cover then claim big they are definitely the hazard to blame.

    It makes me smile watching these because you're on the same journey at the same time. Watching and reading online, you learn it's extra slippy on manhole covers.... But also when it's raining, when it drizzles after a dry spell, when there's oil, fuel, ice, leaves, painted lines, mud, gravel, etc etc... 😩 But so far I've been fine.
    Then there are other things like should I put brake lights on when decelerating because my engine braking is really strong? How much do I lock it to pop in a shop for 5 minutes? At what point will I feel comfortable enough to filter at junctions?
    I also did my first petrol station visit in small hours because I was nervous of that too (even though I've been using them perfectly fine for 30 years! 😂).

      @TwoWheelsTommy  Před 8 měsíci +1

      That is great to hear! Yes I reckon anything that could be on the road becomes lethal as soon as it gets damp. Hope you stay rubber side down 😁. The engine braking is great on my bike so really not hammering the brakes, however, people behind me need to know that I'm slowing down so I apply enough pressure on the rear brake to show the light, without it actually having thsat much braking effect. It is a balancing act! I'm irked to feel the need to lock it outside the shop for a few reasons. It is generally very low crime here on the Isle of Wight. I also literally just stroll in, drop my stuff at the post office (I go straight to drop-off point) and then walk back out so I doubt someone could nick it that quick - it's like 30 seconds. However I have got a disc lock in case I need to be away longer. Filtering will commence sooner, just want to be a little more confident with what I'm already doing first. Half a tank of fuel left here so I might need to fill up next year 🤣

Not good ..I changed them to metzeler racetec 01 90x90 x18 front massive difference on the bike . The rear is 110x90.18. It fits it transformed the bikes handling. Wet grip is excellent

    never get complacent when the roads are wet. stopping + turning + pulling away, all hazardous. I once took a sharp turn on a 50cc motorcycle and right on the corner was a manhole cover ... the road was wet ... and I slid off. Luckily it was a road with no traffic. But if it happens to you on a busy road it can be awful. Just make sure your bike has the best tyres you can afford!

    • @TwoWheelsTommy
      @TwoWheelsTommy  Před 8 měsíci

      You are right, even if it looks good it could be lethal. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to put a drain cover on a corner was not a motorcyclist that's for sure! I did notice my rear tyre is a Michelin so it must be pretty good, I'm not sure about the front. I shall have a look!

    if those mirror stalks are chrome underneath that surface rust, just use some 0000 grade steel wool. 4 zeros is fine on chrome, bit of WD-40 on the wool and it'll just lift off with a little rubbing. Manhole covers are nasty, I came off of my Fj1200 in 2006 and did a lot of damage to the bike and broke myself pretty badly. Wet leaves are also a danger. you'll get used to it. I have a Honda cb1300 and for the steering lock, turn the bars full left and while jiggling the key, gentle move the bars very slightly.. Stay safe, you're doing great.👌

    for the steering lock move the handle bars not quite all the way to the left, there is a sweetspot where it will allow you to turn the key to the lock position. To find it easy put the bars full lock to the left and just back it off a little to the right. it should work.

    Nice to see from your head shots that you are looking. I didn't realize that the camera was "fixed" in the other video. I had heard someone say that in the rain (not just wet, but rain) with good tires, you have roughly 60-70% of your dry traction. I struggle to believe that, but I'm riding at 20-30% of the capability of my bike. But ride your ride. You're responsible to get yourself home in one piece and things will happen that will teach you what you can and can't do.
