  • There's definitely some pros and some cons to building a fence by yourself. There's plenty of great DIY fence building videos out there, but they don't always talk about the challenges DIYers will face when building fences themselves. In this video, I'm going talk about both pros and cons of building a fence yourself.

Spot on Mr. Joe... I started doing fences as a side hustle 3 years ago, now I've move to a full time fence repair and installer. I'm in south central Texas and the land is extremely rocky! I've come to "rescue" folks who started a fence project, but couldn't remove the old posts, dig deep enough for the new ones. Right tools and experience makes a great fence. Thanks for yor videos🤘

    On The Bonding Part:
I've taken over my parents fencing company a couple years ago and my Dad helps me from time to time. 50% good memories. 50% yelling. 😂

The biggest pro for DIY is it gets done exactly the way you want it done even if it takes longer. You'll put a lot of work and sweat equity

I'm going DIY because Ozark doesn't build fences in Florida or Europe! Joe, you are not lying about the con of how much longer this fence is going to take doing it myself! I've been planning and sketching this thing out for over a year. Every time I watch a video I get a new idea and try to work it into my plan. I will say people like me that want to build a fence probably have most of the tools already.

Hey Joe, great videos! A section of our fence recently blew down so I’ve spent time researching different options, meeting with builders etc. we ended up hiring a pro carpenter and it was defiantly the right decision. We’re using black, steel posts with nice powdered coated finish.
Whah are your thoughts on covering the posts or leaving them exposed?
We’re doing a cedar, 3 rail picture frame fence with a top cap. Thanks!

Joe is it ok to build a fence winter time? Any issues with concrete?

  • @midwestaquascaping2588

You are so right. My husband and I diy our fence and it took two months. Would you like to critique our first fence attempt? Would we do it again? Definitive NO!

I could have probably gotten a better price if I shopped around more getting quotes, but I saved about $7000 on 180 feet of fencing by doing it myself! I would have loved for someone to do it for me but 10K vs 3K just isn't worth it. I do share in the belief that a contractor would have put up higher quality pickets than I snagged at the big box store I'll take my savings and run!

Simple hire a pro for the tools alone, ask for insurance and WCB and if they show up in a rusted out truck with the tools in the back walk away. Its not work the risk or headache for the low quote and a weekend warrior.

I had a guy call me about 3 months ago and said "look man, me and my wife are both working at home because the virus, but we started our fence and I want someone else to finish" so I go look and they did a top notch job on it, husband says " I'd you don't finish it I will either get divorced or in jail". They are still married! Now my business does more than fences, I spent ten years on heavy equipment. My dad spent 40+ years on equipment, when I first got on equipment it was 40% getting yelled at, 59% getting told "I know how to do it better" and 1% good job. But I did have a lot of fun.

Remember that scene in the matrix where Neo asks Trinity "Do you know how to fly that thing?" and she responds "Not yet."? That's how it is when something needs fixed and I have CZcams.

Con...how to get rid of old fence if it is a replacement...extra dirt removal....delivery of all materials.....is it level after done or is it a roller coaster.....removing all old posts if it is a replacement=a LOT of labor........pros-save money, that's all i see

All facts, when I quote prices most people wonder why removal is so expensive.

A little hard work goes a long way. Craigslist or Facebook marketplace are 2 great options to get rid of old fence... most folks have low spots in yard to use extra dirt on site, or again CL or FB... all stores will deliver supplies for minimal charge... not sure what you are referring to with smooth or roller coaster... old posts come up easily with a high- lift jack, and then you don't have to dig any holes, use old holes! I'll take a $2000 project over the same project costing $4000 or more any day!
