      Dunning-Kruger effect
      From Wikipedia:
The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with limited competence in a particular domain overestimate their abilities. It was first described by Justin Kruger and David Dunning in 1999. Some researchers also include the opposite effect for high performers: their tendency to underestimate their skills. In popular culture, the Dunning-Kruger effect is often misunderstood as a claim about general overconfidence of people with low intelligence instead of specific overconfidence of people unskilled at a particular task.

He who speaks much knows little. He who speaks little knows much. He who speaks with hubris is he who fails. He who speaks with confidence is he who succeeds. The only way to determine which is which is to look at it from a position of retrospective (looking back at the results).

I just use a $100 battery powered 2 gal sprayer with oil based stain on cedar. You can back brush it fairly quickly if needed. The sprayer cleans up easily and is also used for weed control. I also use the same sprayer 50/50 bleach water to spray on old fences to clean them up. You would definitely not want to brush on bleach. Also sun absolutely degrades bleach, it certainly does not help it "activate".

I heard the 30-second fence cleaner was good but I'd rather just use 50/50 bleach and maybe add a little dish soap to use a sprayer. This section of the fence is maybe two years old and it seems I better stain it before it gets beyond saving

As someone who is currently redesigning my 10+ year old pine fence, I have to say the ‘before’ fence looked pretty good. Faded out but hardly gray or moldy. He picked the worst way to apply the bleach (and no eye protection!). I sprayed my bleach cleaner in the shade so it wouldn’t dry too fast. And bleach breaks down in the sun. I also pressure washed it after. There exists paint mixers for drill/drivers so his mixer was a little silly. I used a cedar colored stain on my fence at it looks so good. I actually used different coats and tints on each board so it looks like reclaimed wood (kind of like the wall behind you, but not as drastic color variations).

The hazard of sodium hypochlorite bleach is not so much the chlorine, but that the commercial product is loaded with lye (caustic soda, sodium hydroxide, NaOH) to give it a high pH which keeps the hypochlorite stable in the container instead of outgassing on the shelf and losing potency. As a cleaner and disinfectant it is more the lye solution that is doing the work, not the free chlorine generated by lowering the pH with the dilution with neutral water. The lye formula resembles the purple degreaser products. On a fence application like this, there is little bleaching going on, it is essentially just a harsh chemical cleaner from the lye that removes superficial dirt and mold. That is why the product makes your skin feel slippery; the lye is turning your skin oils and fat into soap! The chlorine will be weak and gone in a matter of hours or days and won't actually bleach anything, but the lye will soak into the wood and stay for a long time, making it alkaline and interfering with the stain and promoting future microbial growth. If you want to clean a fence better to use a pH-neutral surfactant and a pressure washer. Using a scrubber brush as a paint brush to transport from bucket to target surface is a stupid waste of labor, and as you note, spreading the chemical hazard all over where it doesn't belong.

  • @activemanishere
    @activemanishere Před 2 měsíci +1

I don't often agree with Jeff. But I agree that if you prefer Greyed cedar you are crazy or lazy. I'll add cheap. You stain, paint, clear a cedar fence you add years to the fence, and it always looks so much better. I understand your point though Joe. You shouldn't insult a large portion of your client base. I also 100% agree that if you don't address the post at and just below grade, you are wasting your time trying to add life to the main part of the fence. But a finished fence looks better. I don't think very many people disagree. I think most people are cheap if they hired a fence company or lazy if doing it themselves. I personally am both cheap and lazy. I want to save on labor so I would build my own fence. I'm lazy in that I don't want to do it again for many, many years. I'm also cheap in that I don't want to buy more fencing material for a long as possible! I would build my own fence and take steps on the posts at the grounds as well as finish the fence and reapply religiously.

Until I realised its his daughters house so perhaps he's cutting corners a bit.
Personally, and I know it's a bit strange, but I will put sodium hypochlorite in a snow foam cannon (old one of course) and apply it in that manner.
Really good, super fast and thorough coverage. Can coat a whole fence in literally minutes and no need to dilute it either.
Then when it's soaked you can just pop the cannon off, pop on your trigger and pressure wash it off the fence.

Painter here. He using the worst bush for that job, it's too wide, too coarse and holds very little solution. He goes from the bucket to the fence and most of the solution has dripped onto the grass. Frustrating to watch. Like you suggest, a pump sprayer is the easiest and fastest way to get the product on. Then use a softer brush that holds more solution from the bucket with a more diluted solution to work the product into the corners and crevices. Then rinse it off with a garden hose sprayer and all the plants and stuff that got spattered. Then let it dry for a few days. Use a moister meter if you have one. Like you said 15% or less moisture. Then, like you said an oil based stain. It could also use a light sanding to break off loose fibers. Don't sand too much or you lose the texture of the rough cedar. You don't want smooth spots mixed in with rough spots either.

I don't stain many fences but a do stain a lot of decks and railings. As a painter the only difference between a fence and a deck railing is location. My experience with water based penetrating stains is they work great on bare wood. A few years later when it's time to apply a maintenance coat they won't penetrate at all. They are so water resistant that it just runs off and looks terrible.

Where I live, what he says is true, people are lazy and do not stain their fences. Here in Canada with winter, after 4-5 years fences are in advanced state of decaying if not stain. I live in a brand new neighborhood and fences that are more than 3 years old are turning black and has mold.
And so many people just don't care but it's so ugly. And for the crazy part I fully agree with him too sonce people pay around 10k for a fence that does not last 5 years. For me this is crazy to throw money out of the window like that. Staining takes maybe 2 hours and help keep the fence nice. A few stain them and you can see a clear difference. It's like day and night.

Jeff is anything but a professional. He typically does more things wrong than right. Watching his videos is like looking at a car wreck. And when it comes to safety gear.... Jeff is nowhere to be found. I doubt he even owns a pair of safety glasses. If you don't think product is splattering off that fence into his face while using that stiff brush, I've got a bridge to sell you. And I have never seen anything so ludicrous as him trying to stir the stain with that 2x4 and splashing it all over.
Joe, you are much to kind when reviewing his videos.

It’s funny because he makes the videos to show you, the viewer, the easiest way to get things done with a nice result but just to start he bought a brush head that isn’t going to hold a lot of the product each dip. The brush he went with looks like it’s plastic bristles that are not tightly packed together so 90% of the product stays in the bucket. It would have been much easier and more effective to use a half decent 5 inch stain brush, you would get much better coverage each dip that way lol

A small drill mixer in our area, the area he works in will only run you between $5-8 Canadian dollars as well it isn’t inhibitive to anyone looking to tackle this project on their own to buy one let alone someone who’s being paid to complete this project

I also almost always use a behr waterproof stain for my fences, generally our clients want some sort of tint and behr offers a very wide variety from basically natural to full colour jet black. We use a cheap sprayer and then back brush behind, rarely have any issues and the ones that do arise are almost always from a situation of a dog jumping and scratching at the fence ruining the finish or smaller issues like having their garden hose rub on the edge of a post everyday when they break it out and just need a little can of touch up stain to keep it pristine. We’ve had no issues with the quality of the stain itself and have a much more efficient process of getting the job done than what he’s been saying to do

Its not the easyest way hi does it thats for sure.
And also its not the right way.
And a fence thats 3 years old dosnt need a cemical cleaning befor you put on oil.
Just brush it off or give a good rinse with your presurwasher and let it dry for a few days and then put some oil on it. Yes maybe it needs 2 coats befor it dosnt soak any more. But the do that.

Just for clarification. A light spray with the pressurwasher. No need to go to close with it so you make any marks and open the grain of the wood.

Even the old oiled wooden 3 log fences dont last 50 years.. some of it might but wouldnt still call it a fence.. only stone hardscaped fences will last 50+ years.. unless you encapsulated the wood with something waterproof than its going to get water in it and gonna rot.. bugs.. they sometimes get past your oils or paints.. unless you paint every few years i guess itll last 50 years but i wouldnt call that a 50 year old fence., 50 yr old wood..

Sometimes I think Jeff's videos are great, some questionable even to someone like me not in the trades. The areas I tend to take away most in his videos is general contracting since to be his wheelhouse (think in a podcast he mentioned he was/still is a GC in Canada). But like anything more specialized in home renovations, I double check with a specialist before I attempt anything DIY... Protect yourself at all times.
