That’s a lot of work! I’m a fencing contractor in Australia. Our gates a built different. All hinges and latches are welded all heavy duty. 100mm square galvanised post. Seems like a lot of money fitting and time to build a gate

The frame looks great, but how do the welds hold up over time? A small gusset in each corner would increase the corner strength. Maybe experience proves they are unneeded.

Gate post line post or a latch they all the same amount of concrete. I call my feel good factor. I may not be the cheapest were I live, but I differently try to build the best fence possible. Always mount through the post and gate frame when hanging gates. I still go for the older look with black hinges exposed, but mainly for looks and no wood do not support weight though.
Where can I find the round post “adapters” for gate and for pickets and where do your hinges come from ?

thank you for this I'm going to be doing something similar for the metal frame I'm going to be using the top rail from a chain link fence which I believe is 1 3/8" and I'm going to bolt it onto the rails of the gate like your gate mine is going to open to the inside it has to because there is a hill on the other side. I am going to use a regular deadbolt like you would use on the door of a house for the locking mechanism. I'm going also attach from the fence post to the frame from chain link fence rail; a hinge system like you would find on a chain link fence. the type that goes from the post to the rail. on the bottom of the fence I am going to be using a wheel which it will roll and prevent sagging as well as I am going to go from one post to the next with a steel stranded wire by a turnbuckle it'll go from the top of the fence post bolted to the next closest post which is 4 feet away to the bottom part. I do appreciate the tip about making sure that it is going to match the rails because it is at a slight incline. and I did not consider that but now I will thank you

How would you build a double gate? I assume this but just on both sides? Would love to see a video on that!
I would have a cross bar in the frame. A simple square is flemsy in comparison to a triangular design and it's only one more piece of metal for truly sag free design.
Joe... great video. What is the best way to measure the distance between the gate poles using a gate frame like this and the Shark gate hinges and latch? I guess... how many inches on either side of your metal frame do you measure out to set your poles? Thanks!
This was my q also, but he answered it in the video, you can install hinge side or lay hinge on floor( mock) measure off reference points, & repeat on latch side

I prefer to use the black vinyl coating for the posts and gate frames but it’s exactly the same as this. It’s just a preference of mine that the black blends Into the wood and I also don’t have a issues with using and seeing the regular wood hinges and latches with the black metal frame
This is insane - not in time, but also money. I do love it though.
They certainly to cost more in materials used, but they can actually be installed in less time due to the fact that the frames are pre-built.
I use square stock for posts and fence.
Above all, I clean, prime and paint the steel a complimentary color, (tan) before the wood goes on.
If you put in good anchor posts, you can weld the gate into it's closed position until the work is done, then cut off the supports.
Done. Pretty. Long lasting. Simple. Easy. One man. Low cost. Environmentally conscious. Local. Organic. Free range fencing.

@@JoeEverest yes, a detailed instructional video would be great. The gate seems like the most challenging part of a DIY fence build, especially a double gate.
I like this gate, the only thing without a center rail how don't your pickes break and warp? I also find pouring concrete on your hinge side post will also prevent that post from ever bending.
@@JoeEverest I understand that but with out a center rail their can still be warping due do natural climate changes and drying, and I see all the time where no center rail is put and the pickets over time break and warp "bow" in and out.

With the understanding that you could actually just kind of kick through the middle of the gate since there's no 2x4 support to hold the wood up in the middle of the gate you're only supporting the tickets from the top and the bottom which severely decreases structural integrity in the center of your gate

In Dallas and the surrounding suburbs, we stopped building dog ear fences many years ago, we consider that as “very basic”. You guys ever build flat top fences with 1x4 trim?
Yes, I lived in Dallas over 30 years and that’s the way I liked my fences. Moved to San Antonio and all the wood that is offered is dog ear. Can’t find a straight cut picket anywhere.

Unfortunately this hardware will not work with postmaster posts.
Realistically, you would only need the heavy gauge pipe on the hinge side. Especially if you had multiple gates, you could save a little cheddar that way.
True, but when buying full lengths in bulk it doesn’t save enough to warrant keeping an entirely different SKU.

Do you have any videos on using a steel gate for a vinyl fencing? I am replacing a short section of wood fencing with vinyl. I want a gate that is sturdy, can be opened from both sides and is lockable. When my fence was put in many decades ago, (wire mess), I had a stainless steel gate and posts. Oddly enough, one of the gate posts corroded at the cement level and because that was being replaced, I replaced this section with a wood privacy fence. (As an aside, to this day, not another post on the entire fence has this corrosion problem.) Now I am replacing the wooden fence. After decades, we are now seniors and want no muss, no fuss, therefore vinyl.

That's a completely different set up from the methods we uses we make a round pipe frame gate with a 2-inch pipe and then we use something that is called a box hinge for around the gate frame and then around the post and the fence post and lab supposed would be 3 in ss40

I’m sure you’ve been swamped with questions, but if you have some time could you shed light on the material you used for the steel frame? Is there a gauge of steel you would recommend?
We use 1.5” square galvanized tubing, 16ga.

Do you have a problem with pickets warping on the gate since they are only fastened on the top and bottom and not in the middle?
We haven’t, probably because we’re using Cedar. If using Pine and warping is a concern a middle brace could be added easily.
How does the latch work if you were to build a double gate?
There is a different latch for double gates, same mechanics but it’s made to bolt directly to the gate frame!
@@JoeEverest I'm about to build a driveway gate and would like to know where to buy the latch you're referring too. Also, you said the steel frame company makes an adjustable frame or welded like you used. Where can I find the adjustable option at since I can't weld myself. I checked your website but couldn't find either.

We would use cox or bulldog hinges, also with a steel framed gate. Great question!

Interesting video. Unfortunately welding the frame is outside the realm of most DIYers.
A couple of things , would have looked better if you had the top of gate level even though you would sacrifice approx 100mm in height at the house. Just rake the bottom rail of your gate frame with the fall of the ground. A middle metal rail on gate frame also. Need to put some caps on the gate frame to prevent water inside of gal tube to prevent rust in the future. Instead of using timber rails on the gate frame we use gal or stainless steel hardened screwshank nails into the palings straight into the metal frame. Makes the gate lighter without the need of timber rails bolted to the metal rails. Never had any issues and been fencing for over 25 years.

That was the first thing that caught my eye, was the unlevelness of the top of the gate pickets, and the skinny ripped piece over to the right side of outside of gate. I came to watch the video bc I watched his response video to another gate builder. But after watching his response video and the points he pointed out, was the exact same thing he was showing on his own gate, so what's the point of pointing out someone else's flaws when you've got your own flaws??

Where did you get that steel bracket
I'm looking to build my fence using round steel posts. Would you say it's okay to use 16 gauge round steel posts for the rest of the fence and just use the sch40 steel posts for the gate posts?
Also, would this type of steel gate system be adequate for a 12 foot double gate (two 6 foot gates)?

Why not use Postmaster posts for the gate instead of round galvanized posts?
Isn't Postmaster post more expensive?
I dont like the post master post especially when building a shadow box style fence. It throws the eye off when looking down the fence at the spacing.
I've watched about 6 of these vids, and haven't disagreed with ANYTHING. But in NTexas alot of the soil is "unstable". Movement by hinge or latch posts makes a "guarantee against sagging" virtually impossible.

Absolutely, you’ll just need to keep the additional weight in mind.

Top quality work right there!!! When I weld galvanized stuff together, the welds themselves and the metal around the weld tends to rust while the rest of it doesn't. Do you guys do anything to prevent that? My welder isn't that great and I use the run-of-the-mill wire spools.

Hmm. Thats a standard gate with steel frame. I’m making them out of cedar. I’ll have to see if there is someway to integrate a steel frame into my custom cedar gates

Where can I buy the hinges??
So the question is do you want to deal with wood sagging, like the rest of the fence, or do you want to deal with rusty chain link fence poles and welded together tubing holding things together. To me that steel gate looks garish against that wood fence. If you feel that you need to hide is from the outside to protect the curb appeal, you better be darn sure, from a customers perspective, I don't want to be looking at it every time I go out into the yard.
@@JoeEverest understandable. Personally I would not expect lifetime thats a lot to ask. Everything requires maintenance eventually. I would just expect a good 10-20 years before it needed work. New hinges/latch, New frame, New face boards. Galvanizing does help, but it still looks out of place against the wood fence.
Yah but you could also paint them to a neutral color with a touch up every 3 years

Hi I called Forney Fence 3 times over a couple weeks and also asked to get quote. Never got anything, I think first call was Oct 9. Got any other options that might work since these guys are not responding?
@@JoeEverest In Portland OR and Postmaster website for retailers in area HomeDepot and Lowes shows up but they only have one type of the post not sides and different heights, going to order online maybe plus could use hinge, gate frame and latch that is good quality want all medal. Got three gates to ideally 4, 6 and 8 ft plus need to have post, frame and hinge to do it. All different heights ideally, could maybe do 6 foot high if only option
That heavy of a gate you should have went with a schedule 80 , the extra cost will pay off over the life of the gate.
You need support from the top corner of hinge side to the bottom corner of the other side, I would use a cable with a turn buckle! Can use the turnbuckle to square the frame during fabrication as a bonus.

Sorry Joe, while enjoyed the video, I've got to say that those poles and offset hinges and all of that metal just looks horrible. I know it is on the inside of the fence and not visible from the outside, but still it just looks horrible. Any hints on how to make a strong gate that is a bit more appealing to the eye? How about a gate with hidden hinges so you don't see anything from the front or back?
That certainly is a concern, but we haven’t come up with a great way of boxing out this hardware without the cover looking just as out-of-place
@@JoeEverest I have never tried this myself but have you considered extruded aluminum maybe 2040 to form a frame and then traditional hinges bolted through it? I think it is worth considering, It might be more visually appealing than the round steel tubing. I might try that on my own fence, the wooden gate is getting a bit long in the tooth.
I don't get it, what's so special about the posts? Aren't them just regular 3 inches galvanized steel terminal posts?
Yeah, they’re 40 weight 2-3/8” posts. Standard on chain link fences, but they’re still a bit of an anomaly on wood fences.
