After watching the documentary that came out last night, it makes sense. Michael wrote the song (along with Lionel) that’s why it was easy for him, he played a major part in creating the song. Also y’all gotta realize how hard it is for alot of these artists to sing like this. Watch the documentary and you’ll have a different perspective on this
Yup, MJ and Lionel wrote it and were really comfortable with the notes that needed to be sung. Huey had to adapt and take his voice to a place he wasn't used to. Knew a lot about the song already, but watching the documentary made me appreciate Huey way way more and loved how hard he tried until he got it just perfect.

Michelle Preis the chick sure is full of life . here's a little secret, in the eighties when I was a teen I had a crush on her big time even though my friends made fun of me over it.
Well, he did co-write the song with Lionel Richie and worked on the demo with Quincy Jones about a week before the night they asked the rest of the singers to record after the American Music Awards that year. Everyone else had to learn their parts in a matter of hours because they needed to record everything before the next morning since everyone was flying out to resume their own work schedules.
@@Dannied0ll If you didn't notice, they were trying different renditions of the same section. Different harmonies between three singers. And some semi-improvised parts to add the singers' personal touches. It's like when you make a movie or television show, you take several "takes". In the end, you choose the one that fits best. Michael's section did not contain a harmony with any other singers. It was a single straightforward melody. There was nothing to experiment with. If you didn't notice, everyone was singing in key the entire time. There were no "wrong" notes. But there was room to experiment on who got what note in the harmony. Part of it is that you "don't know those singers". Cyndi Lauper certainly was not straining to hit any of those notes, though she did add some rasp to her voice for effect. It was effortless for her, too. And she was light and funny. No sweat.
He wasn't mad. MJ was really, REALLY shy. He was just just delivering his line when needed and otherwise stepping back and letting Lionel handle the famous person relationship stuff.

As much as do know his work ethic was incredible. As I recall, the song's chorus with the entire group was recorded first. Then majority of the group left when the selected solo parts where selected to record the individual lines. Everything except Bob Dylan and the later part by Ray Charles was recorded before daylight the next day after the American Music Awards. The extra parts were recorded a week after.

Yeah. I've seen this before in my career. Her performances are about emotion, connection and raw talent. Well he still knocks it out of the park. I don't know why you are so insecure that you bash anyone who suggests Cyndi Lauper isn't the best vocalist of all time. I get being a fan, but anyone with ears knows she was an average singer.
Es sorprendente que todas las intervenciones de Cyndi Lauper siempre fueron afinadas y en el compas pero ninguna fue igual a la otra. Eso quiere decir que tiene una gran creatividad e improvisación. Una genio.
And he could've too if he wanted. He had amazing range. I'm scratching my head here, listening to these other three struggle to sing one/two lines on key.
@@paradoxmeld2937 For a nobody I sure do have you bothered. Lol! And the truth still stands: Those other folks in the clip couldn't sing a simple line or two on key. Not only that, some of them couldn't even sing on beat! How are they professional singers and can't even sing a few simple lines on key and on beat? Lmao! That's just bad singing. Period. And don't try to use MJ as a scapegoat. It doesn't matter if a singer's singing next to Michael Jackson or Roseanne Barr. If you're a so-called professional singer, you should be able to sing simple notes on beat with relative ease. Especially if you're singing in a group because the other voices naturally mask a bad note here and there. That's why people who are picked to sing solos (like Michael Jackson in this clip) tend to be the best singers in the group. It's because when singing solos there's no other voices to hide behind. If a soloist sings a bad note (like Cyndi Lauper in this clip), it's more noticable. And I don't even hate Cyndi or the others. I've heard them sing before and they sound alright in their specific genre at times. But this clip just proves that there's a huge difference between "performers" and real, talented singers. This clip shows why MJ is the King of Pop.
Cyndi really is an amazing talent, all her takes were slightly different but each one was Gold, and when she nailed it, it was perfection. Really under appreciated in my opinion, one of my favorite voices of all time. Ah Ye ye yeah yeah yeahhhh
You could really hear how she developed her part. Every take was better than the previous one. In the final take her timing how she came in and the high notes at the end were perfect and give the track the energy that it needed.
Yeah! I adore her! I've loved her since she was in her band "Blue Angel" back in 1980. I have their one and only album. And not trying to be rude, but her name is spelled "Cyndi". 😊💖👍
Michael Jackson is just a generational talent, his part was very perfect Is an honor to see this and to know the dedication they all put together to give us the greatest song ever written ❤️
This video is pure authenticity. A rare look into the candid-ness of a group of legends. Theres no way footage like this could ever exist of the artists of today as the music industry is too highly guarded in public image & promotion and many performances are tweaked to perfection without allowing us to see the work going into it. Even live concerts are staged.
Cyndi stated in interviews that she didn't want to be rude and try and over power Kim Carnes and Hewy Lewis so she held back..when she did over power..it was pure magic!
This scene is pure gold, Michael and Lionel looking for perfection while Darryl Hall, Kenny Logins and Steve Perry try to help Huey Lewis, Kim Carnes and of course Cyndy Lauper, Only big names in music without auto tune. Love it.
Shout out to Lionel Richie for making Cyndi more comfortable with herself. And for suggesting that they sing that last part in harmony. Excellent idea Lionel! Oh and I'm glad the Netflix doc came out. It shows that no one received demos like some idiot lied and said they did. Michael looks disappointed, but thats because he didn't go to the AMAs that were going on. He was practicing by himself all day. Everyone else was at thr awards show. So NO ONE had any preparation before getting there that night. Which makes this show just how talented these people actually were. They had ONE NIGHT to get this done without any prep whatsoever. I said this in my last comment. That you Netflix for proving me right. And after 39 years this coming out, my memory is still better than most people.

@@scabab90 Good point.
Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote it so those two would of been at it none stop then dragged in everyone else off their candy.
He's pitch perfect, it's actually difficult for him to sing out of tune
Insane. He’s a god
Watching this made me love love love Steve Perry! He was so spot on, so supportive, and just a talented artist amongst the most talented of artists! He really stood out to me!❤
I absolutely agree! Ingram did too!
He wasn't looking at the sheet like the rest, and every time he gave a different take. Made it look effortless. A real pro, great musician and indeed a stand out.
I couldn’t agree more!! It was so refreshing to see a true artist at work!

He had the easy part. Lets not BS this.

Hahaha exactly
Well he still knocks it out of the park. I don't know why you are so insecure that you bash anyone who suggests Cyndi Lauper isn't the best vocalist of all time. I get being a fan, but anyone with ears knows she was an average singer.
Who? I've never heard anyone except you call her and outstanding elite singer. She's average at best and her voice sounds like a cartoon character.
Michael’s unimpressed face is killing me 😭😂😭😂

Love her New York accent.
I love Cyndi Lauper, I’d have her child!!!
The way cyndi talks just her whole swag is so raw
she was very unique back then
It’s pretentious annoying and she had a cat like voice. Her songs had good music but awful vocals
Raw??? In what way???
Russo Swerve It’s ok, she ruined her entire career that way - by the time of her third album in 1989, everybody had had enough
Russo Swerve she should have never had a solo part in this production.
Es sorprendente que todas las intervenciones de Cyndi Lauper siempre fueron afinadas y en el compas pero ninguna fue igual a la otra. Eso quiere decir que tiene una gran creatividad e improvisación. Una genio.
When Cyndi removes her jewellery like she’s wearing all the treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb.
That's the rich stuff from One Eye Willy.

She is a goonie.
She probably didn’t want to damage it or leave it in the way

Micheal looks like he is just about ready to burst out and sing the whole song by himself 😂😂
And he could've too if he wanted. He had amazing range. I'm scratching my head here, listening to these other three struggle to sing one/two lines on key.
@@kexia5630 You try singing right after Michael Jackson. No pressure! Haha.
@@EnslaveTheWorld I'd sing a whole lot better than the "professionals" in this clip that sung after Michael. I'd at least be able to hold a note. Lol!
@@kexia5630 LMFAO YOU ARE A NOBODY SHUT UP
@@paradoxmeld2937 For a nobody I sure do have you bothered.
My childhood crush Cyndi lauper😘♥️

Cyndi really is an amazing talent, all her takes were slightly different but each one was Gold, and when she nailed it, it was perfection. Really under appreciated in my opinion, one of my favorite voices of all time. Ah Ye ye yeah yeah yeahhhh
