How I Became The Worst Dad....

  • Skiing and snowboarding has inherent risks. Collisions and near collisions with other people are one of the top hazards on mountain.
As a family who prioritizes skiing I want to teach my kids from an early age to do everything they can to maintain awareness and to pay attention.
We also sometimes increase the risks as a family by sometimes goofing around, pulling and holding onto each other while moving on skis. I coach my kids to only do this with each other and there are times and places where this isn't okay.
We value risky play and believe that embracing risk is an important and healthy part of life.
This was an incident that luckily didn't turn out worse and I'm grateful for that.
Every 1-2 winters we usually have 1 "incident" where there is a near-miss or a collision of sorts. And every time when I share the video I have people on social media state that the downhill skier needs to be looking up behind them before they turn or stop.
This shows me that many people do not know about or understand the Alpine Responsibility Code.
This is quite absurd to me. As the a dad who often adventures with his kids I take a lot of pride in having as much "extra" awareness as I can. I am usually one step ahead of my kids and can anticipate their next moves. This could and sometimes does involve looking behind me, but that will never supersede the importance of the uphill skier always paying attention and giving the right of way to the skiers and boarders below them.
I think a lot of people who comment negatively on this situation aren't big skier or snowboarders themselves AND many of them aren't aware just how good a skier Adia is.
I speak to my kids like they are capable and competent humans - because they are.

My father use to say “I’m not raising a kid, I’m raising a future adult” and I think that’s what you’re doing very well.
She’s learning earlier to be more responsible and you teaching her that is invaluable life experience, which in turn will definitely prepare her to be a more responsible adult and that’s all any good parent can ever do, so keep up the excellent work and ignore the haters. ✌️

Just for one second imagine if Adia had run over someone else’s ski’s, this could have had a whole different outcome. He didn’t yell or scream like a lunatic, his voice was raised because he was uphill from her. The lesson was you need to be aware of your surroundings, which is true for every single person in every situation. Good on him for teaching the lesson and admitting he too had some skin in the game.

You're hearing the flack from people who probably don't invest any where's near as much time with their own children as you. These are the best years of your life so enjoy them. I was in your shoes with 5 kids on skis at once 30 years ago. Today we challenge the extremes together because they weren't sheltered, but encouraged to challenge themselves and what they could accomplish. You are an amazing dad that I love watching since Adia was 2 years old. Love you man.

Agree…..most likely the negative comments weren’t from skiers (kinda obvious). You always mind those below you on the slopes. A lady I know had someone who was out of control run into her. She suffered 2 black eyes (which were also bloody on the sclera) and cuts on her lip and cheeks from the other skier’s edges. The other skier came up between her skis pitching her backwards. They both fell but she got slapped in the face with the edges…..OUCH! The skier was above her but clearly wasn’t in control.

Love your videos and the encouragement you give the kids without pushing too hard. The kids are clearly loving what they are doing and the love you and your wife have for them is obvious.

The internet needs to take a huge chill pill and just let people live their own lives and values. The internet is not responsible for raising anyone, so people using the internet should stop acting like they are the parents of the people they are watching. Everyday everyone is learning lessons and it just so happens that on that particular day Adia learnt to watch out down hill despite distractions and Dad continued to learn that his self worth is not based on the internets opinions.

I think it's important to hold kids accountable especially in a sport like skiing. You did the right thing reminding her about yielding to the skier ahead and always being prepared to stop on a dime. This past week a mother with her young son were merging in the lift line but it was my husband and I's turn to merge, the young boy (7) looked at us and then went in front, the mother explained to him that we were supposed to go first and then instead of correcting him and letting us go first she turned to us and said "sorry" which only teaches him the behavior is ok. This seems to be the norm with parenting now, never correct your child.. and if you do you are a bad parent. You're doing great...I like how you are assessing the negative comments, those moments can also help us grow. ❤

As a certified ski and snowboard instructor, thank you for teaching your kids the skier responsibility code. You were not restricting traffic, and you were visible from above. Always be in control and be able to avoid other people and objects, and people downhill have the right of way, are the two biggest rules broken here. One rule that was added recently was if you are involved in a collision you are required to stop and exchange information with the other person, much like an auto accident.
People that have a problem with you teaching her the rules are either ignorant or part of the problem with our society, don’t let it get under your skin. As a dad of five I have appreciated your approach to parenting and coaching. Well done sir, keep it up!

I remember seeing that video and I don’t think you went from being a great dad to being a bad dad. Yes, to accountability on both Adia’s part as well as your part. Which you are doing a great job teaching all of your kiddos. You corrected her, firmly, but lovingly. Which is the way it is suppose to be. Internet is a crazy place, with keyboard trolls, just waiting for someone to mess up (either literally or as far as the the mind of the troll is concerned), so that they can chew them out. Trolls are just unhappy people, who have to try and bring others down to their level, so that they feel better about themselves. Glad that you grew a thicker skin in regard to negative comments! In my opinion, that was exactly the right lesson to impart. Sure, both of you could have been more aware of your surroundings, but the uphill skier should always be paying attention to their forward field of vision and prepared to stop or alter course as necessary because you can't predict what any skier in front of you will do and they don't have eyes in the back of their head. Hopefully, she wouldn't be following a stranger that closely either. And for what it's worth, I think you're doing a great job. These are memories they will cherish for life.

I will admit, sometimes I catch myself being unnecessarily nasty to people because of the anonymous nature of the internet.

I have been thinking about you and this incident all day, then told my wife about it. She agrees that as a child who grew up with both parents skiing, and her Dad was a US Marine officer - they stressed safety to all six kids. They always enjoyed skiing just as you do with your family, but you can get there were times when my father in law read his kids the riot act about dangerous behavior and held them accountable.
You did the right think. Hands down. I am certain she learned this lesson completely and it probably gave her pause to consider why those rules are the way they are. COULD you have done it better? We Dads always can. The important thing is you really thought about this and your focus is on safety and teaching.

As a ski coach, I go over these responsibilities all day every day.
You are 100% correct... It is vital for kids especially, to understand that they have responsibilities out on the mountain and could hurt themselves as well as others they may potentially run into.
I personally would have gone much harder and been m
ore forceful in letting her know that she was less than a foot from potentially breaking your leg or multiple of her own bones.
Kids do not have fear or understand the physics of the forces that come in to play with speed. She must have been skiing close to 20mph. Broken bones and concussions are definitely in the realm of possibility.
I see things on the mountain almost daily that are so close to being catastrophic that it isn't even funny.
I feel strongly that this was a major coachable moment that really needed a bit more clarification as to what you may have done wrong but also what she most definitely did wrong.
One of my biggest rules is never do a hockey stop in the middle of a run... But I'm sure you knew that.
There were extenuating circumstances with kids on the lift and wide open slopes. This is part of skiing. Amazing sport, lots of potential distractions and situations that create accidents.
From what I can tell you are a great Dad and have a great family. I love to see families out having fun on the mountain together 👍😊🙏

I'm really jealous when I see the huge amounts of snow on your videos!! How much snow do you have there? Is this normal or is this winter so rich in snow?
In Europe there is snow only at 2000 m!! Drama! Many ski resorts are standing and waiting for snow.
Greetings from Poland and Germany to the whole family - especially Adia.

You are 100% correct. What the heck are these people talking about. You and your wife are doing a fantastic job raising your children which those complaining really need to learn from. The individual responsibility part especially in my opinion. May God Bless and Protect You and Yours.

Been watching you guys for a while, you don’t need to explain yourself you and your wife are probably the best parents out there. These near misses are great learning opportunities for everyone specially the little ones and nobody got hurt but good to have on video to reflect and learn from it. She’s gonna learn a lot from this experience and that’s what counts :)

I think anyone who sees this incident as a “big deal” rather than just a good learning opportunity must be a non/poor skier. Sometimes (especially skiing with kids) everyone gets a little distracted or inattentive, and situations like this are a good reminder to everyone to stay aware of your surroundings…there’s really nothing to get overly upset about here!

As a ski instructor who works with kids you are completely in the right. Of course you give leeway to kids who don’t understand everything yet but that was a dangerous maneuver Adia did so she does need to learn. I actually had an adult do something similar while I was teaching a lesson today and I was worried because he could have killed one of my students. Thanks for teaching your kids right so they keep themselves and others safe on the mountain!

Let's say it was a learning opportunity for all parties. As a teacher, I know that kids, even when you have explained guidelines and such to them, don't always see it the same way adults do. I also know that it could have ended differently, too. So keep up the good work, Dad!

You calmly, politely, professionally corrected your child for breaking a specific rule. You then told her the rule she broke and that it wasn’t cool. You then said debriefed on the chairlift the rules and problem with what happened, probably your mistake for not posting that conversation where I’m sure she said you’d stopped in front of her and you’d have acknowledged your part. Well done! Good job! People complaining are the problem and not enough of them properly, regularly correct their kids or get outside and do activities with them, which is why we have so many problems! Ignore them and carry on!

6 of 1 half a dozen of the other. Lesson to be learnt by both father and daughter here.
    1) Dont stop half way down and in the middle of the piste
    2) Always look where you're going
