  • A jigsaw is a very useful tool as it can be used to cut out items that you simply cannot cut using any other type of saw. In this video we take a look at some blades and also do a couple of cuts in timber, 10mm thick acrylic and also 10mm thick aluminium. Brought to you by www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/for...

    This was very helpful! Thank you, I was making some shelves for my shed from pallet wood. All I had was a cheap handsaw, until I found an old jigsaw in the house kicking about. I can start some more projects now.

    Very detailed and precise. When notching out I tend to drill a couple of 10mm hols in each corner so I don't need to do the extra cut when your on the job every second counts! 😀

    Great video as always mate, thanks. I just got my first proper jigsaw today, and I chose the Evolution Rage 7-S corded 710W. I was impressed with their mitre saw so figured I'd stick with them.
    It seems pretty good so far - heavy, but powerful and easy to use, and I like the laser line and the guide rail for straight cuts. I might add some Bosch blades too, though I'm sure the Evolution multi-purpose ones are pretty good too. I'm really glad you showed the "notch" method in this video, as that was precisely what I needed to do for my first ever jigsaw cut. I am really not sure I'd have figured out the curve method on my own, not immediately anyway. I'd probably would have started drilling holes trying to get the blade in to make the last horizontal cut :)

    Yes you can cut thin acrylic using a jigsaw but you have to go really slow. A circular saw is better, or scribe breaking is also easy on thinner acrylic (for straight lines)

    Hy, could you advise please. I'm planning on making some garden signs out of timber I have left from planters I made. it's tanalised timber approx 20mm thick possibly less. what type of jig saw blade is best? I want to keep it as finer finish as possible but obviously more teeth per square inch blade will mean the blade struggles. there will be some intricate work as the bottom of the sign will have a saw edge shape. Any help greatly appreciated. Scott, Wirral.

    Thanks for the vid I sort of given up on my jigsaw I can never get a good cut, I find myself using my plunge saw for straights and chop for angles and multi tool for cutting bits out. but I will always need the jig for curve cutting, don't forget you can always clamp a straight edge and use that as a guide rail.

    Good informative video as usual.
    I came across your video while looking for ideas for a jigsaw table.
    Ideally I wanted a bandsaw but I’m really tight on space in my garage so a “sort of” jigsaw table will do the trick for now.
    My plan is to attach the jigsaw on a custom made base plate and fix it on a piece of plywood. Then it will be attached on my work mate. Therefore when not in use I can fold it down and hang it on the wall where my folding work mate is currently right now.
    As I know you are good in the metal work field, do you think that a 5 or 6mm alluminium plate is strong enough to attach a jigsaw into it? I’m planning to make two aluminium base plates, one for my jigsaw and another for my Dewalt router. I will make them both of the same size in order to fit in the same cavity that I will make on the plywood.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  Před 6 lety +1

      5mm or 6mm thick aluminium should be fine for such a job. Good luck with the project ;-)

    • @ultimatehandyman

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  Před 3 lety +1

      Jigsaws are not good on thin metal, unless you get a really fine tooth blade (the more TPI the better). If you do use the jigsaw, it's often better to use a sacrificial piece of wood underneath ;-)

    if you have a cheap one that is powerful with a good blade is that a problem? I never used a dedicated one, rather a "multi tool" in the form of black and Decker Multievo drill system (look it up). with the supplied blades the cuts are smooth and fast but without careful movement dont cut straight...

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  Před 8 lety

      It depends what you are doing. I once went to help a mate with a fence and he only had a cheap jigsaw, trying to rip cut just one board took about ten minutes and was really hard work. A cheap jigsaw and cheap blade can be okay for some small jobs.

    • @AMalas
      @AMalas Před 8 lety

      ***** now here is the thing, the drill cost me about 150$ that includes the 18v battery, the motor, and the regular drill gearbox and Chuck. But then this gearbox and Chuck is removed and a jigsaw attachment made up of tge jigsaw gears and plate could be inserted which costs 30$ so I am not really sure if it is classified as cheap but it is certainly powerful

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  Před 8 lety

      +Anas Malas
      I guess that is cheap for a cordless version, as many professional version with the charger and battery would be 3 times the cost of that- then you would have to buy the drill as well.

      It's great on most materials. I have fitted laminate flooring in full rooms from one charge, but on thicker stuff like kitchen worktops it looses it's charge much quicker and if I remember rightly it takes two batteries to make a sink cutout in a kitchen worktop but that is understandable due to the thickness of the material.

    Wouldn't it be helpful if the jigsaw threw out a laser line in front of it to help you keep it lined up especially at the start of a cut? If that has not been done before I hereby claim the patent :-)

      No LOL, Lasers on saws are just a gimmick. You need to watch the exact point where the blade is cutting. I do have a chop saw with a laser but never use it as I always align the cut mark with the blade. A light near the blade might be a good idea though then you can see the blade in dark conditions ;-)
      Quick get the patent in LOL
